26、Are you thinking about holidaying alone, but a bit concerned about the dangers? You needn’t worry if you consider these tips first.
1. Safety
Unless you positively invite danger — i.e. wandering around a dark park at 3 a.m. with headphones on — travelling alone isn’t actually that risky. 【1】 In the case of taking taxis, always keep a record of the plate number and ask for an estimated fare before setting off. You should also carry your ID card with you and always keep a back-up. And most importantly, ensure that someone else knows your route and keep in regular contact with them.
2. Plan
Being alone means you can’t use your partner’s phone when yours runs out of juice, or rely on them should you lose your wallet. 【2】 It’s a good idea to write down some key numbers of friends, hotels and emergency services beforehand, and keep some back-up money in your bag, just in case.
3. Eating
Many single travelers have a fear of eating alone. 【3】 You can bring a book to avoid boredom, sit at counters to be less noticeable or use the opportunity to practice your foreign language on a waiter.
4. Making friends
【4】 This is another common concern when travelling alone. In fact, acquiring new companions (伙伴) is easier than feared. You can smile at people, have open body language, read something interesting to start conversation, or ask strangers a question. All these help you look approachable. More hands-on tips include visiting bars, joining tours or using apps designed to help people make friends.
5. Enjoy it
Without having to consider others’ needs, the joy of solo travel is that you can be entirely selfish: walk at your preferred pace, eat what and when you want, and go wherever you like to see the sights that interest you. 【5】.
A.What if no one likes me on my trip?
B.The biggest danger is being taken for a ride.
C.It’s actually not so hard to get over your worry.
D.You needn’t get into a panic if this really happens.
E.However well you plan in advance, things will go wrong.
F.Just appreciate your independence and enjoy that freedom.
G.So put emergency systems in place before starting your trip.
27、Nowadays women appear to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men.
In a survey done for insurer MetLife,51% of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side: Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving. “Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers, which leads to fewer accidents,” the report says. However, not all male drivers share the same opinion. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39% claimed male drivers were safer. The findings did back them up on one point:automotive knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents.
Auto safety unavoidably matters to money. Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. A study by the website Insweb also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states. Among individual states, women get the greatest advantage in Wyoming(where they pay 20% less), South Dakota and Washington,D. C. where their insurance costs are 16% lower.
“More than 11, 900 male drivers died in U.S.traffic accidents in 2009,compared with just under 4,900 women drivers,” according to the study. “Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, VS 1.7 deaths for women. ”
【1】According to the study, female drivers ________.
A. are more aggressive while driving
B. are more interested in auto knowledge
C. are more likely to stick to driving laws
D. are more familiar with safety equipment
【2】Insurance companies focus on female driver clients probably because they ________.
A. cause more accidents on the road
B. pay more money to the insurance companies

28、Getting your kid to bed at night is one of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do. Most kids are so full of energy that they’ll tire you out before they’re halfway through their store of energy. An easy way to encourage your child to get into bed is to give in and allow some iPad screen time. However, as you’ve probably already guessed, it’s really not a great idea.
Researchers at Arizona State University carried out a study with 547 kids between the ages of 7 and 9. Their parents tracked how much screen time the kids were allowed along with their sleeping patterns. They also had the kids wear wristwatches called actigraphs that could help researchers keep track of how long the kids were sleeping. The study found that kids who did not engage in screen time before bed slept for 23 more minutes every week and also went to sleep about 34 minutes earlier than their iPad-using counterparts (同伴). Although that might not seem like so much more time, quality of sleep is very important in children’s development.
The 2018 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey showed that good-quality sleep can influence a child’s life in many ways, including affecting grades. Students with an “A” average slept for 30 or more minutes per night (an average of 6.71 hours) than those with a “D” or “F” average (averaging 6.16 hours). Of course, getting to sleep on time and sleeping enough helps contribute to improved performance in school.
As hard as it is, it’s really important not to give in and hand over an iPad to a child who is about to go to bed. Just like it’s important for adults to go to sleep without any distractions (分心), it’s even more important for kids. The one comforting thought is that finally they’ll outgrow this stage, and soon you’ll have to worry about waking them up as teenagers.
【1】What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A.To explain an idea.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To offer some advice.
D.To summarize the whole text.
【2】The researchers found that kids’ using an iPad before bed __________.

There was a time when British Olympic medal winners became household names because there were so few of them. But the 67 medals at this year's Games in Rio and 147 at the Paralympics meant that the GB medalists’ reception at Buckingham Palace was a crowded and happy event.
Many of this year's winners spoke of being inspired by athletes of previous generations. Inspiration fed their aspiration; and having discovered abilities they scarcely knew they had, these athletes are now inspiring others.
A few months ago, I saw inspiration of a different kind when I opened the new Cambridge base of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, where Prince William works as a helicopter pilot. It was not hard to be moved by the 【1】 of the highly skilled doctors, paramedics and crew, who are called out on average five times a day.
But to be inspirational you don't have to save lives or win medals. I often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things: volunteers, careers, community organizers and good neighbors; unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special.
They are an inspiration to those who know them, and their lives frequently embody a truth expressed by Mother Teresa, from this year Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She once said: 'Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love'.
This has been the experience of two 【2】 organizations, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and The Prince's Trust, which are 60 and 40 years old this year. These started as small 【3】, but have grown beyond any expectations, and continue to transform young people's lives.
To mark my 90th birthday, volunteers and supporters of the six hundred charities of which I have been patron came to a lunch in The Mall. Many of these organizations are 【4】 in size but inspire me with the work they do. From giving friendship and support to our veterans, the elderly or the bereaved; to championing music and dance; providing animal welfare; or protecting our fields and forests, their selfless devotion and generosity of spirit is an example to us all.
When people face a challenge they sometimes talk about taking a deep breath to find courage or strength. In fact, the word 'inspire' literally means 'to breathe in'. But even with the inspiration of others, it's 【5】 that we sometimes think the world's problems are so big that we can do little to help. On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out【6】 , but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.
At Christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby some two thousand years ago. It was the humblest of beginnings, and his parents, Joseph and Mary, did not think they were important.
Jesus Christ lived obscurely for most of his life, and never travelled far. He was maligned and 【7】 by many, though he had done no wrong. And yet, billions of people now follow his teaching and find in him the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Christ's example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe.
The message of Christmas reminds us that inspiration is a gift to be given as well as received, and that love begins small but always grows.
I wish you all a very happy Christmas.
