二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、One of the biggest concerns in science is bias(偏见)-that scientists themselves, consciously or subconsciously may put their thumbs on the scales and influence the outcomes of experiments.Boffins have come up with all sorts of strategies to try to remove it, from having their colleagues repeat their work to the “double blinding” common in clinical trials, when even the experimenters do not know which patients are receiving an experimental drug and which are getting a sugar-pill placebo(安慰剂)。

But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results. The point was demonstrated by two recent papers published in a journal called Surgery. Despite being based on the same data, they drew opposite conclusions about whether using a particular piece of kit(工具包)during surgery reduced or increased the chances of infection.

A new paper, from a large team of researchers headed by Martin Schweinsberg, a psychologist at a European School in Berlin, helps shed some light on why. Dr Schweinsberg asked analysts to explore two seemingly straightforward theories. The first was that a woman's tendency to participate would rise as the number of other women in a conversation increased. The second was that high-status participants would talk more than the low-status participants.

As it turned out, no two analysts employed exactly the same methods, and none got the same results. Some 29% of analysts reported that high-status participants were more likely to contribute. But 21% reported the opposite.Things were less finely balanced with the first theory, with 64% reporting that women do indeed participate more, if plenty of other women are present. But 21% concluded that the opposite was true.

The problem was not that any of the analyses were wrong 'in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques. When it came to defining how much women spoke, for instance, some analysts chose the number of words in each woman's comment. Still others defined it by the number of conversations that a woman participated in,regardless of how much she actually said.

  • 27、   A road running through Accra, Ghana's capital, looks like any other blacktop(柏油路). Yet what most drivers don't realize is that it is made from plastics—melted bags, bottles, and snack wraps--that otherwise would have ended up in a landfill.

In a developing nation, “it's difficult to recycle plastic,” noted Heather Troutman, program manager of the Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership. “It's expensive, and much easier just to burn it. But if you could put value on recycled plastic, it won't get buried or burned.”

First appearing two decades ago, plastic roads are being tested and built in more and more countries as the world's plastic pollution problem becomes more serious. India has built over 60,000 miles of these roads. The technology, meanwhile, is gaining ground in Britain, Europe, and Asia. Several countries—South Africa, Vietnam, Mexico, the Philippines, and the United States, among them—have built plastic roads recently. Roads containing waste plastic have the potential to perform as well or better than traditional roads. They can last longer, are stronger and more durable(更耐用的)in respect to loads, car tolerate wide temperature changes, and are more resistant to water damage and cracking.

Troutman views plastic roads as “a promising advance,” especially in a country like Ghana with more road projects in the future. And yet, with the prediction that by 2050 the world will produce over three times as much plastic waste as it ever has, she stresses it is vital to curtail Ghana's all unnecessary use of plastics. “This is the first step,” she noted. “If we keep pumping out more and more plastic, we'll never be able to manage it in a sustainable way.”

【1】Why it's hard to recycle plastics in Ghana?

A.The plastics are hard to break down.

    B.The country lacks related technology.

C.The whole recycling process costs much.

    D.The government advocates burning plastics.

【2】What can we infer about plastic roads from the third paragraph?

A.They are mainly promoted by India.

B.They are able to stand extreme weather.

C.They are being tested for better functioning.

D.They are becoming popular in some countries

【3】What does the underlined word “curtail” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Reduce.

    B.Cover.

    C.Reward.

    D.Delay.

【4】What's Troutman's attitude towards plastic roads?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Flexible.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Pessimistic.

  • 28、Dear Alcohol,

You've been around forever. I can remember all the pain you've caused for me.

Do you remember the night you almost took my father's life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He's addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn't the only one hurt by you that night.

Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen completely. "I'm so embarrassed," they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit (呕吐). "I'm sorry," they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. "This won't happen again," they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you.

Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn't realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And it's all your fault.

I wish you'd walk out of my life forever. I don't want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you've caused. Sure, you've made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you've caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring (引诱) in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please.

    Sincerely,

    Anonymous

  • 29、Picture the scene: You come home after work feeling too exhausted to cook –only to find a delicious meal worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant waiting for you. It sounds like a fantasy, but it could be about to come true thanks to a robot chef developed by British scientists.

Those scientists have come up with a set of robotic arms so smart that they are capable of cooking meals all by themselves. The device will be sold from as early as 2017 as part of a purpose-built high-tech kitchen.

Scientists at Moley Robotics spent almost 18 years developing the hands. According to its creators, the arms can chop, stir, whisk and baste well enough to recreate almost anything you would care to eat, whether it is a simple home-cooked supper, or a complicated creation designed by a world-class chef. The hands move a little slowly, hovering strangely above the work surface whenever they are not busy, but they imitate human movements closely enough that they can do things such as wiping a spoon on the edge of a pan to prevent drips.

Mr Oleynik, who is leading the project, said, “All the things which are possible with the hand are possible here. There is no limitation. A lot of people want to go to Michelin-starred restaurants, but they are quite expensive and may be quite far from the home. This is an opportunity for people to enjoy very good food, and for a reasonable price.

The only cuisine that is off the robot’s menu at the moment is sushi, which requires extremely steady pressure and nimble(敏捷的;敏感的) fingers to make, but the team plan to conquer that as well by the time it goes on sale.

    A. Bread   B. Beef   C. Sushi D. Sandwich

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

    A. Hands of a robot chef can perform exactly like a cook.

    B. Robot chefs are available at shopping malls.

    C. Michelin-starred restaurants are suitable for many people.
