二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Anyone who has ever played the game of Tetris (俄罗斯方块) knows the game’s surreal ability to spill into real life. After you shut off the game, you still see those Tetris blocks falling in your mind. You're grocery shopping and find yourself thinking about rearranging items on grocery shelves. Your mind continues to play the game, even when you're physically not.

Robert Stickgold, a Harvard professor, noticed something similar after a day hiking a mountain. That night, he dreamt he was still going through the motions of mountain hiking. Curious about this, he tried something: he got a group of college students of various skill levels to play Tetris and let them sleep in the Harvard sleep lab.

Over 60% of the students, including those who suffered from amnesia (健忘症), reported dreams of images of Tetris pieces falling, rotating (旋转), and fitting together. Interestingly, half the Tetris expert students reported such Tetris dreams, while 75% of the beginners did.

A study found that playing Tetris can grow your brain and make it more efficient. Adolescent girls played the game for an average of 1.5 hours a week over three months. The cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) of the girls grew thicker, while brain activity in other areas decreased. Richard Haier, who had found that there was a "Tetris learning effect", in which the brain consumed less energy as mastery of the game rose, concluded, "The brain is learning which areas not to use."

Haier's study showed that as the girls practiced playing the game, nerve cells made connections, communicating through synapses (a synapse is a connection between two nerve cells). When you learn something, you change those connections. Every time you reactivate(激活) a circuit, synaptic efficiency increases, and connections become more durable and easier to reactivate. Stickgold says sleep plays a role in this memory process.

So to sum up, whenever you do specific tasks over and over again, they take up less of your brain power over time. And that’s pretty amazing.

1What does the underlined part ‘surreal ability’ in the first paragraph mean?

    A. The game can help people arrange things in life.

    B. The game can be applied to many aspects of life.

    C. There are great similarities between the game and things in life.

    D. The mind continues to play the game when we are doing other things.

2What can we learn from Stickgold’s study?

    A. More than half of the students dreamed of images of Tetris.

    B. Students having bad memories didn’t dream of the game.

    C. The Tetris expert students were more likely to dream of the game than the beginners.

    D. More than half of the Tetris expert students didn’t dream of the game.

3Playing Tetris for a long time can help ________.

    ①grow one’s brain

    ②one’s brain function efficiently

    ③arrange things tidily in life

④improve the adaptability of one’s brain

    A. ①②③   B. ①②④

    C. ②③④   D. ①③④

4The purpose of the passage is to ________.

    A. encourage people to play Tetris

    B. warn people to focus while doing things

    C. warn people not to play games before sleep

    D. tell people they will improve at something if they keep doing it

  • 28、Artist David Bowie may have sung “Is there life on Mars?” in 1971 but the dream of finding or placing living creatures on the red planet is still alive. Oxygen, of course, is critical. Thanks to a large leap in scientific technology, there is now a machine which can produce oxygen in certain environment, and it is a giant step of Mars exploration. Scientists are thrilled because the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) will hopefully make astronauts survive on Mars.

NASA’S Perseverance Mars Rover is a machine of many wonders. Attached to the exploring robot is a particularly innovative device, MOXIE. When started, the device takes several hours to warm up. It then begins filtering(过滤) and pressuring air pulled from Mars’ atmosphere. The air then undergoes an hour-long breakdown process in the part of the machine known as the Solid Oxide Electrolyzer (SOXE). It breaks air molecules(分子) into carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) and oxygen. The collected oxygen is, of course, the breathable element we are all familiar with here on Earth. MOXIE produces 0.2 ounces of oxygen per hour—about as much as a small tree does through photosynthesis(光合作用).

Testing MOXIE’S performance under different conditions is a critical research. “The productivity of MOXIE is unstable,” the investigator Jeffrey Hoffman, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says in a statement. “The atmosphere of Mars is far more changeable than Earth. The density of the air on Mars can vary by a factor or two through the year, and the temperature can vary by 100 degrees. One objective is to show we can run in all seasons.” The team has tested it in fall, winter, and various times of day. They hope to confirm it also works in spring, as well as at dawn and dusk when Mars’ temperatures change rapidly.

Demonstrations of MOXIE’S success offer hope that missions to Mars will be more practicable than previously thought. “To support a human mission to Mars, we have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth, like computers spacesuits and habitats.” Hoffman says. “But oxygen? If you can make it there, go for it you’re way ahead of the game.” Scientists hope a scaled-up model could arrive before astronauts and begin preparing a habitable amount of oxygen for a team of six astronauts arriving months later. The key is how the earlier-arrived MOXIE works without humans.

    【1】Why are scientists excited?

A.MOXIE helps prepare for human Mars exploration.

B.MOXIE helps confirm the existence of life on Mars.

C.MOXIE is expected to turn Mars into another Earth.

D.MOXIE is the first demonstration of technology on Mars.

【2】What is the function of SOXE?

A.To give off oxygen into Mars’ atmosphere.

B.To remove oxygen from air molecules.

C.To filter air from Mars’ atmosphere.

    D.To warm up MOXIE.

【3】What is Jeffrey Hoffman’s worry about MOXIE?

    A.Its method of transportation.

    B.Its consumption of energy.

    C.Its test result.

    D.Its adaptation to Mars’ atmosphere.

【4】What is the next step for MOXIE?

A.How to land MOXIE on mars.

    B.How to make MOXIE automatic.

C.How to match equipment with MOXIE.

D.How to increase the production of MOXIE.

  • 29、Read the following passage and then answer the questions.

When thinking back to an experience that has affected me the most, I can’t help but recall the first time I performed for a crowd with my band.

As I stood in the dark, in front of 300 people, my head began to pound and my eyes began to hurt from straining to see the faces before me. No matter how many times I wiped off my hands, they were covered with sweat, making them fumble across the strings of my guitar. Then, in a flash, the spotlights were turned on and the crowd yelled. My heart raced and I knew that the night of my first concert would be exciting and memorable.

The concert was held annually at Frank's school. Being the largest activity for the students in the spring, we were told to expect the whole school to come to see us play. That fact went over and over in my mind. True, I had played in the school band in concerts for many people, but that was with a large group and I had sat in the back. Here it was just the three of us, all up front. I had had different visions of what performing would be like, but what ended up happening was a pleasant surprise.

During the first song, the crowd stood in a mixed state of confusion and excitement. I could see nothing but their dark shapes, some swaying to the beat of the bass drum, others standing still, examining our every move. The song ended with hesitant applause.

Glancing at Frank, the guitarist and singer, I read a message in his eyes. "I don't think they like us." His look pierced through my heart and I almost left the stage, yet kept going anyway. The second and third songs went the same way with the crowd looking at us like monkeys in a zoo. But then the magic started.

Our fourth song we had was written for the occasion and it was as if it were the beginning of a trip that we would take with the crowd of onlookers. The funk bass and driving drums seemed to pick these people up like puppets and do with them what they pleased. The crowd danced and jumped and clapped, in and out of beat. Our music was giving these people a reason to lose their inhibitions and for a short time, enjoy themselves. By the end of the second to last song the crowd was at our mercy. Finally creating a situation that I had only dreamed of, during the last song the crowd began to sing the words. But it was not just any song, it was a song we had written. This sent my heart racing and I couldn't help smiling and even laughing. The song ended and an echoing roar came over the crowd.

The concert was to me part of a childhood dream. My friends and I were responsible for giving 300 people a good time for an evening. They sang my words and they hummed my tune, and all helped to make the dream come true. That night back in my room, I sat up all night. I saw the bodies dancing in front of me and heard their screams. Even though I may perform in college and in the future, this feeling is one I may never feel again.

Questions 26 to 30. Judge if the following statements agree with the information given in the passage. Choose A for TRUE if the statements agree with it; choose B for FALSE if the statements don’t agree with it; choose C for NOT GIVEN if the information the statements carry is not mentioned anywhere in the passage.

1The three of us usually sat up front in the school band.

2In the beginning, the audience was not fully absorbed in the performance.

3The song written for the concert aroused the audience’s excitement.

4When the fourth song started, the audience began to sing along.

5In the end, the performers played more songs at the request of the audience.

Questions 31 to 34. Match the following words with their meanings in the passage. Note that there are four choices more than you need.

    6straining

    7fumble

    8inhibitions

    9racing

    Question 35. Choose the best answer from A, B, C or D.

10What is the best title for the passage?

    A. My Valuable Experience.   B. A Special Occasion.

    C. My Childhood Dream.   D. A Memorable Concert.

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me," the tree asked the boy gently.

“I am no longer a kid; I won't play around trees anymore," the boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them. ”

Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money." They boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.

    The tree was upset.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. “Come and play with me," the tree said.

“I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?" “Sorry, I don't have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house. ” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.

The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn't appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree requested.

“I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?" “Use my trunk to build the boat and you can sail and be happy. ” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.
