二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Coffee drink is widespread. When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they’re usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.

Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the shade of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.

Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases the local wildlife habitat, because native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there.

Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides(杀虫剂)are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, and then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.

Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as "shade-grown" and "bird-friendly".

Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it’s worth it.

1Which opinion does the author agree with?

    A. People should buy full-sun coffee.

    B. Shade-grown coffee should be supported.

    C. Farmers should change the places to grow coffee.

    D. Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting.

2Compared with the traditional method, what advantage does the full-sun method have?

    A. It can protect the ecosystem.

    B. It can promote people's health.

    C. It can provide mare nests for birds.

    D. It can increase the production of coffee.

3How do farmers get more land to grow full-sun coffee?

    A. They cut down trees.

    B. They move to other countries.

    C. They turn grassland into farmland.

    D. They buy more land from other farmers.

4What can we learn from the passage?

    A. It is quite worthwhile to buy shade-grown coffee at any cost.

    B. Farmers all have realized the importance of protecting the environment now.

    C. South American farmers are taking action to plant coffee in the traditional way.

    D. The full-sun method does good to the health of human beings in the long run.

  • 27、Sales of Apple’s new iPhone 11 in China began on Friday, but were met with a cooler welcome from customers than in previous years. Unlike in previous years, no long lines were seen outside Chinese shops on Friday for the new iPhone, and the product release (发布) only made the headlines in a few media.

Huawei released its Mate 30 smartphone series on Thursday night. Its new devices(设备) have won consumers’ hearts at home and abroad. • 28、Nowadays, the term “quiet quitting” has taken over the Internet, meaning lying flat, or taking a break from the overwork. It appears to have originated from a TikTok video posted by Brian Creely. Creely showed an Insider article written by senior reporter Aki Ito. The headline read, “Fed up with long hours, many employees have quietly decided to take it easy at work rather than quit their jobs.” Creely said, “More people are quiet quitting instead of leaving.” The video has received nearly 100,000 likes and more than 4,000 comments, the vast majority describing the benefits of doing the bare minimum.

Despite a number of news outlets reporting that quiet quitting is a trend that is being encouraged, Insider found many users on the app were actually warning people against doing so.

Ashley Herd, a former employment lawyer, posted two videos about quiet quitting. In her videos, she argued that while limiting work to what is specified in the job description is fine, doing so quietly can be detrimental. “If someone is stressed out, they should feel able to have that conversation with their manager,” she said.

A TikToker and consultant Mary posted a video titled “Minorities should be careful quiet quitting”. In the video, she said, “Unfortunately in America minorities are held to a different standard. We are looked at differently. So we have to go above and beyond to be successful. We can’t risk being regarded as not performing.”

In recent weeks, TikTokers have been warning workers that quiet quitting could lead to “quiet firing”, labeled as a new workplace trend. The phrase describes the longstanding practice of constructive dismissal—creating an environment that leads a worker to quit their job in order to avoid having to fire them. Creators are receiving hundreds of thousands of views that post about quiet firing and call out managers who employ the practice.

【1】What aspect of quiet quitting is introduced in paragraph 1?

    A.Its origin.

    B.Its innovation.

    D.Its standard.

【2】What does the underlined word “detrimental” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Strange.

    B.Harmful.

    C.Vital.

    D.Effective.

【3】What is Mary’s opinion on minorities at work?

    A.They needn’t perform well.

    B.They should make greater efforts.

C.They have better chances of success.

D.They are treated as equally as others.

【4】Which of the following can be a sign of quiet firing in the workplace?

A.The boss asks a worker to leave the job.

B.The boss allows a worker flexible working hours.

C.The boss puts off a worker’s promotion on purpose.

D.The boss provides a worker with a new environment.

  • 29、You have everything you think you need for your dream job, but could something else be holding you back? You possess hard skills for the job, but you may lack soft skills.

Hard skills are things that are measurable and technical. A master’s degree in business is a hard skill. The ability to speak Spanish is a hard skill. Many specific qualifications for a job are hard skills, such as years of work experience or proficiency (精通) with particular computer programs.

On the other hand, soft skills are harder to define. And they can’t be defined. And they can’t be measured. Soft skills covers a wide range of characteristics that you can work on for a lifetime but some of the most common — and most necessary for success — include being a good listener and speaker, a wise leader, a problem solver, a strong communicator or a team player. It’s also helpful if you can accept feedback, settle conflicts with others, deal with difficult people or be flexible. These soft skills are what many employers desire.

Soft skills benefit you in many ways. Being a good listener, for example, is very helpful if you’re a doctor. Being flexible, a team player and a problem solver help you succeed when dealing with deadlines.

Soft skills are something extra that help a particular person to success. Being able to show you possess them could make a difference in landing a job you’ll love, or being more successful in the job you already have. They make the difference between someone who is just OK at their Job and someone who is outstanding, the person you always want on your team. In general, soft skills make you more likable and more competent.

Soft skills are what can set people apart from each other on resumes or in job interviews, but soft skills don’t come naturally.

【1】What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Hard Skills Differ from Soft Skills

B.Soft skills Can Be Learnt at School

    C.Soft Skills Needed in Workplace

D.Soft Skills Matter to Your Success at Work

【2】Which of the following belongs to hard skills?

A.Having a good command of English.

    B.Communicating with others efficiently.

    C.Being good at expressing oneself.

    D.Being able to solve problems.

【3】Which of the following is TRUE about soft skills?

    A.They are measurable and technical.

B.They are taught in many universities.

C.They are desired by many employers.

    D.They are specific job qualifications.

【4】What will be probably talked about following the last paragraph?

    A.Why soft skills are important.

    B.How soft skills are developed.

    C.Where soft skills are applied.

D.What the key soft skills are.
