26、The New Old Age
October 4, 2017
New York City
Age discrimination (歧视) may be the last prejudice to still be tolerated in mainstream American culture. Older people are usually kept out of TV screens, advertising billboards and other popular-culture areas. Yet aging athletes, scientists, musicians and many more have proven time and time again that you can age and still do great things. What will it take for the rest of society to catch up with this reality? The Atlantic’s New Old Age Forum will invite top experts on aging for a full discussion of age discrimination and they will explore relevant issues ranging from aging in place to long life and work.

27、Beatrice De Lavalette developed a passion for horse-riding when she turned 3. However, in the spring of 2016, 17-year- old De Lavalette was waiting for a flight when she got hit by a bombing at Brussels airport. Along with serious burns, De Lavalette lost both legs below the knee. Yet she said if it weren’t for the event, she wouldn’t be the person to join in the Paralympic Games(残奥会) in Tokyo.
Getting back in the saddle(马鞍) was no easy work because of her injuries. However, five months after the bombing, thanks to her courage, determination-and further treatment and training---that’s exactly where she was. “I had no muscle, I was just skin and bones, so being back on the saddle with no sense of balance was really uncomfortable. But with time, I was able to build up the muscle and work on my balance,” she said.
Unsurprisingly, De Lavalette was depressed as she tried to come to make peace with her injuries. She got lots of help and encouragement from her family, friends and the doctors, but she still couldn’t pick herself up. She cried a lot in the hospital until an unexpected visitor, her beloved horse, DeeDee, turned things around for her. “DeeDee saved my life,” Beatrice said. Adjusting to her disabled body was, in many ways, like having to learn to ride all over again. And the Paralympics offered a perfect chance to show her hard-earned skills. “I can’t change what happened, but I can still achieve my dream. As I have said many times, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. What else is there to say? There are no ‘What ifs’. I have a new life in front of me,” Beatrice said, “What’s important is that I’m alive and I feel that I will do something great with my life. ” We’d say that she already has.

28、 For a long time, people had to listen to the radio to get news, drama and music at home. This all changed with the development of the television in the early 20th century.
For most of TV’s history, we have fitted our weekday evenings around broadcasts of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Except that’s no longer the case. Today, we have the power to watch whatever we want, whenever we want, wherever we want through streaming (流媒体) services. The services have given us access to more content than was ever possible, including back catalogues of classic shows and movies.
It’s not just the streaming services that are taking away audiences from traditional TV channels either. Social media sites also provide competition to traditional TV since they allow the uploading of video content, meaning users can watch more shorter clips (剪辑) at their convenience.
In the UK, adults are spending more time watching content on streaming services than ever before. In 2018, these figures were 26 minutes per day. This has been the trend for the past decade and it doesn’t look like it will be changing any time soon. While demand for streaming services is growing, the main UK channels continue to be the most watched overall. For example, in 2018 UK adults continued to watch BBC One for an average of 41 minutes per day, more than any streaming services.
While the traditional TV networks have seen a decline, the television set itself doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere any time soon. Most major TV channels have their own catch-up streaming services, which significantly increase their viewing figures. Additionally, the BBC began making content that’s only available through its iPlayer service. BBC Two allows its viewers to watch original content at their convenience without having to wait for the show to air on TV first.
So, while around 50% of all households now subscribe to at least one streaming service, there is no way of knowing where television is going.
【1】What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The advantages of streaming services.
B.The popularity of traditional TV channels.
C.The competition among streaming services.
D.The effects of the Internet on people’s lives.
【2】What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Analyzing official figures. B.The changing viewing habit.
C.Preferring to watch short videos. D.The great demand for UK channels.
【3】What do major TV channels do to attract more audiences?
A.Enrich their content.
B.Put on older TV shows.
C.Seek help from video makers.
D.Provide streaming services.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.How Traditional TV Networks Were Formed
B.Will Traditional TV be Replaced by Streaming
C.What Were Broadcast on Early TV Programs

“I’m going to miss you so much,Poppy,”said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up,hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪)get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it. ”he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?”His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog,“Okay,Poppy time to go back home. ”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week,Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy,or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too,but they knew their son would be back to visit,Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried,“What should we do to cheer Poppy up?”asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything. ”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,”smiled Mon. “Without anybody left in the house but us,this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy. ”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box,she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.
