二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、We live in a techno logical society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft(手艺) no longer exists.

One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability(持久性). “Homes in those days were well-built,” they say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.

Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.

One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts(精确切割)on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.

The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, but only if given proper material.

【1】Compared to the carpenters in the past, modern carpenters are__________.

    A. more successful   B. more learned

    C. more imaginative D. more hardworking

【2】What does the underlined word “they” (paragraph2) refer to?

    A. Carpenters who are fond of oak stairways.

    B. Carpenters who have college degrees.

    C. people who think highly of carpenters of old

    D. people who think that modern material is of low quality.

【3】What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?

    A. People in the past preferred to use oak to build stairways.

    B. It is now expensive to employ a carpenter.

    C. Modern houses last as long as the old one.

    D. Good carpenters still exist in modern times.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A. Is Craft Dead?

    B. Craft, Back to Life?

    C. History of Craftsmanship

    D. Carpenters Today and Yesterday

  • 27、During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people developed new hobbies at home. However, the 17-year-old Benjamin Choi, a high schooler in Virginia, US, began working on an invention that would quickly go beyond the scale of just a “pandemic project”. He set out to design and build an affordable robotic, prosthetic (假体的) arm that could be mind-controlled without requiring any brain surgery, reported Smithsonian magazine.

Choi was inspired by a 60-minute video he’d watched in third grade where researchers implanted tiny sensors into a patient’s brain, allowing her to move a robotic arm using her thoughts. “I was really amazed but also alarmed that they require this risky open brain surgery.”

Choi set out to design an improved version himself. With past experience in programming and robotics, he was able to independently design the first version of his robotic arm using his sister’s 3D printer. This initial version worked, using brain wave data and head gestures. The brain wave interpretation algorithm (算法) he had to write from scratch, for which he’s now acquired a provisional patent (临时专利权), was still to come.

In October 2020, he received a support in money from polySpectra, a company that produces durable 3D-printed materials. They helped to produce his arm, moving it out of the prototype (原型) stage and making it working for daily use.

After over 75 designs, Choi’s non-invasive, mind-controlled arm is now made from engineering-grade materials. It operates using the algorithm, which is driven by artificial intelligence that interprets a user’s brain waves. The arm remains affordable—it costs under $300 (around 2,000 yuan) to make.

Now, the invention has earned him a spot in the top 40 finalists of one of the oldest and most prestigious science and math competitions for US high school seniors. Choi wants to continue to improve his prosthetic arm in the future.

【1】What inspired Choi to create a mind-controlled arm?

A.A brain surgery he read about in a magazine.

    B.A famous science competition.

    C.A documentary about tiny sensors.

    D.A video he watched before.

【2】What did he do to create the mind-controlled arm?

A.He used a small 3D printer sponsored by polySpectra.

B.He learned programming and robotics from other experts.

C.He wrote a brain wave interpretation algorithm himself.

D.He and his sister designed the first version of the robotic arm.

【3】What do we know about the latest version of the prosthetic arm?

A.A tiny sensor was implanted into it.

B.Choi wrote a whole new algorithm for it.

C.It is made from engineering-grade materials.

D.It is able to categorize brain wave patterns.

【4】Which of the following words best describe the mind-controlled arm?

    A.Unique but expensive.

    B.Creative but unstable.

    C.Advanced and complicated.

    D.Safe and affordable.

  • 28、Ancient Rome was one of the world’s most powerful empires more than 2,000 years ago. Romans’ ideas about roads, laws, government and buildings still influence us today.

The Colosseum in Rome was built during the phase of the Roman Empire, in the first century AD. 【1】 It is a popular tourist attraction today.

Italy, located in southern Europe, is shaped like a boot. • 29、Parents often think that time spent with their kids will gradually decrease in adolescence. But a new study suggests that while teens try to avoid spending a lot of time together with their parents, private parent-child meetings may actually increase in their early adolescent years. And that may raise a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊) and social confidence, especially if it is the time that spent with Dad, the researchers added. The researchers created a long-term study in which they invited families in 16 school districts in central Pennsylvania to participate. In each family, a teenager, a younger sibling (兄弟姐妹), their mother and their father were interviewed at home and then asked about their activities and self-worth five times over a period of seven years.

The study authors were surprised to discover that when fathers spent more time alone with their teenagers, the kids reported they felt better about themselves. Something about the father’s role in the family seemed to improve self-esteem among the teenagers in the study, said study co-author Susan McHale, a professor of human development at Pennsylvania State University.

“Time with Dad often involves joking, teasing, and other playful interactions. Fathers, compared to mothers, were more involved in leisure activities and had more peer-like interactions with their children, which is crucial for youth social development,” the study showed. But Marta Flaum, a psychologist in Chappaqua, New York, said, “How these findings reflect the real world is a real question. The sample in the study is so small and so unrepresentative of most families in the country today that I’m not sure how much we can generalize from it. In my community in Westchester County, I don’t see parents and teenagers spend much time together at all. Parents are often working so hard and have less time to be together with their kids.”

However, Flaum encourages parents to make time for their kids no matter how much work they have to do. “Research like this reminds us of how important it is. The time we have with them is so short,” she said.

【1】According to the study, when teenagers spend more time alone with their fathers, _________.

    A. their social skills will be improved

    B. their fathers will better understand them

    C. they will be willing to help their siblings

    D. their family members will spend more time together

【2】What is Flaum’ attitude towards the findings of the study?

    A. Unconcerned B. Favorable.

    C. Doubtful.     D. Puzzled.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. The research by Susan McHale.

    B. The work to be done.

    C. Parents’ encouragement.

    D. The time parents spending together with their kids.

【4】Where is the passage most likely to be taken from?
