  • 27、   Across the world language and history are closely connected. Languages are borrowed and changed. And as society changes, new words or phrases are created to show the current cultural understanding. Some phrases and words simply develop accepted usage, their origin forgotten.

One such phrase “grandfathered in” has become common, meaning someone is free from following new rules or regulations. While it often makes us think of the image of a gray-haired, older gentleman who gets out of trouble, the intention behind the term arose from something bad. Today, the term is widely used, most notably in real estate(房地产) and health insurance.

But when the term was first created in the 1890, it referred to only one thing: voting rights. After the 15th Amendment(修正案) was carried by the US Constitution in 1870 banning taking away people's right to vote on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude (奴役), some southern states did not readily accept the ruling Instead, they carefully made amendments at the state level that avoided the federal law to try to keep African Americans from accessing polling stations(投票站).Since the basis of race could no longer be used, the state amendments introduced poll taxes as well as literacy(识字) tests. These limits were powerful; close to 30 percent of all voting-age males couldn't read or write, most of whom were poor black men. But those taxes and tests would also affect poor unlearned white voters. Thus, a grandfather clause (条款)was added to allow an unlearned man to vote as long as he or his lineal ancestor had been a registered voter before 1867-three years before the passage of the 15th Amendment.

The clauses no doubt not only influenced the vote along racial lines, but party lines(党派界限). At the time, most African Americans were Republicans (the party of Abraham Lincoln) and most whites were Democrats. The influence served to keep power in the hands of the Democrats.

The phrase “grandfathered in” is of course still widely used today without the meaning of taking away one's voting rights. But even as culture develops, whether we're aware of it or not, language has the power to hold our history.

【1】In which condition is someone considered to be "grandfathered in"?

A.When he looks like an old man.

B.When he disagrees with new rules.

C.When he is not limited by new rules.

D.When he succeeds in making big money.

【2】What was some southern states purpose in making state amendments?

A.To stop black people from voting.

B.To make black people work for them.

C.To save face before the northern states.

D.To reduce the number of polling stations.

【3】Why was the grandfather clause added to the state amendments?

A.To cut poll taxes for poor white men.

B.To make sure uneducated whites could vote.

C.To allow more white men to be educated.

D.To free old white men from taking literacy tests.

【4】What does paragraph 5 focus on?

A.The fights caused by the clauses.

B.The composition of the two parties.

C.The link between language and history.

    D.The power of culture.

  • 28、Shannan Hearne’s oldest dream was to own a ranch (大牧场). From the moment she was first placed in the horseback at age two, she had always felt most comfortable on it. In February 2020, her dream finally came true, when she and her “ partner in-farm ” , Cory Conley, opened the gates of Sun and Moon Ranch. Then, just a month later, the country went in COVID-19 lockdown. Soon Hearne’s vision began to grow into something bigger.

With eight acres of grasslands and an abundance of sunshine and fresh air, there was no safer way for frightened neighbors to get out of the house. The ranch, Hearne realized, should be for everybody — it would be a place the community could call home.

As the pandemic deepened, locals began to gather there, not just for the free barbecues, but for the chance to put up a hammock (吊床) when they wanted some peace. Recreational vehicles and campers were welcome to pull in for a quiet night after a day on the road. “ I have a vision for the space being relaxing for whoever the universe sent our way — horses or people, ” says Hearne.

One of those people, now 15, was born without fingers on one hand. His grandmother brought him to Sun and Moon for riding lessons. Learning to control a horse with one hand helped him better manage his disability. Plus, a special bond with two of Hearne’s rescued horses, Annie and Honey, was a real leg up confidence-wise. “ There is something empowering about controlling a thousand-pound animal, and I believe this is especially true for children or anyone who struggles with any sort of self-confidence issues, ” Hearne says.

Another boy became selectively dumb after being bullied because of his autism (自闭症). Lesson by lesson, Hearne watched him slowly come out of his shell. Taking the reins (缰绳) helped him feel once again in control of the world around him. “ He went from not answering questions to talking our ears off, ” says Hearne.

    【1】In Hearne’s vision, her ranch should be ______ .

    A.a big commercial success

B.a healing place in hard times

C.a perfect site for riding lessons

    D.an amusement park for children

【2】In paragraph 4, how did the friendship with two horses influence the boy?

    A.It improved his riding skills.

    B.It helped boost his confidence.

C.It stirred up his love for animals.

D.It taught him to get along with others.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.A Big Ranch

    B.COVID-19 Survivors

    C.Sharing the Sun and Moon

    D.Coming out of the Shell

  • 29、My best friend traveled to stay with our family last weekend. When she arrived, she went straight to the kitchen and, without asking, ate a spoonful of raspberry jam and some dried fruit. She wasn’t being rude. I knew she would do this. We’ve known each other for almost 20 years. She can eat anything she wants from my kitchen. Indeed, I bought her favorite fruits and snacks at the shop that morning.

Our long weekend together was luxuriously simple. I was recovering from surgery and couldn’t go to shopping malls. We passed the time running errands, going to the post office and collecting dry cleaning. We drank away too many cappuccinos. But we talked about every little detail of our lives.

There’s never been a quiet moment in our friendship. We’ve lived in different cities for almost a decade. Reunions demand constant conversation. Our personalities are matched, to be sure, and a shared history is indescribably valuable. We were competitors in high school before bonding over a bad experience. Then we discovered the many interests that we had in common. Our friendship strengthened itself quickly. We stayed companions through law school, through our first jobs and our first boyfriends. We supported each other through break-ups and breakthroughs. Ours is a friendship for ages.

There is something special about friends who know everyone and everything about you. They are rare. These are the people you’ve chosen to witness your life. They have seen the bright lights of achievement, the depths of despair and the boring routine of the in-between.

It’s special to unpack feelings and frustrations without wasting time filling in the blanks. As my long weekend shows, with such friends we don’t have to “do”, we simply have to “be”. We drop the act, the performance, the public version of ourselves.

The special friendships are those which never fail to delight, the continuation of which is worth the extra effort, despite distance and difference sneaking into your separate lives. I had the very great joy of this reminder last weekend. I’m lucky to have found this friend, to see a future where her companionship remains. Being together is perfection.

【1】What happened during her best friend’s visit?

A.They enjoyed an eventful long weekend.

B.They talked constantly about their lives.

C.They made their favorite snacks and coffee.

D.They talked about what happened in their lives.

【2】One thing that the author appreciates about their friendship is that ________.

A.they help each other deal with the boredom of life

B.they prefer to witness each other’s lives from far away

C.they try to show each other their best selves

D.they are comfortable just being themselves when together

【3】Which of the following would the author agree with?

    A.Charm comes from difference.

    B.Politeness brings best friends closer.

    C.Good friendships need devotion.

    D.Distance can separate good friends.

【4】What is the tone of the passage?

    A.Light-hearted.

    B.Humorous.

    C.Serious.

    D.Desperate.
