二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When ivory hunters target elephants, the hunters can affect more than just animal numbers. In Mozambique, past hunting pressure led to an increase of naturally tuskless (无长牙的) elephants in one park, a study finds.

During 1977 to 1992, people hunted elephants and other wildlife for food and ivory. This caused the number of these large animals to drop more than 90 percent in the country’s Gorongosa National Park. Records show that as elephant numbers plummeted, the proportion of tuskless female African savanna elephants rose from about 18 percent to 51 percent.

Decades of poaching appear to have made tusklessness more beneficial from an evolutionary perspective in Gorongosa, encouraging the rapid increase of tuskless females with mutations (变异) in two tooth genes, researchers report in Science.

“The rapid killing of tusked individuals changed the makeup of features in the elephant population in only two decades, leaving behind more tuskless individuals,” say evolutionary biologist Shane Campbell-Staton and his colleagues. “The tuskless feature is heritable (可继承的), and the evolutionary change in the population may stick around for several generations at least, even as poaching eases.”

The team also analyzed the genetic instruction books of 18 tusked and tuskless females, zeroing in on two genes with mutations in tuskless females. “In humans, the influence of one of those genes can cause tooth fragility and the absence of a pair of upper teeth at the front of their mouth,” Campbell-Staton says, “Abnormalities in the other gene’s protein product can cause incorrect formation of the tooth root and tooth loss.”

Hunting “changing the course of evolution” in Gorongosa’s elephants, Campbell-Staton says, can have profound effects through the ecosystem given elephants’ dramatic impact on their surroundings. “Tusks are not just decorative. They serve a purpose,” he says, detailing how elephants use tusks to dig for water and strip tree bark for food. “If an elephant doesn’t have the tool to do those things, then what happens?”

【1】Which of the following is true according to the study?

A.Ivory hunters killed elephants for their tusks.

B.Elephants lost their tusks due to natural evolution.

C.Hunting affects the number and appearance of elephants.

D.Human activities brought about great changes to the ecosystem.

【2】What does the underlined word “plummeted” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Decreased.

    B.Increased.

    C.Remained stable.

    D.Became Unpredictable.

【3】What do we know about the tuskless elephants?

A.They have the same genes as the tusked.

B.Their tuskless feature can be passed down.

C.Their tuskless feature doesn’t exist in males.

D.They have a biological advantage over the tusked.

【4】Why does Campbell-Staton mention the example of human teeth?

A.To explain the cause of gene mutations.

B.To show the impact of mutated tooth genes.

C.To raise humans’ awareness of protecting teeth.

D.To call for actions to protect tuskless elephants.

  • 27、China’s first cloned police dog, three-month-old Kunxun, has begun training after arriving at a police base in Kunming, southwest China’s Yunnan Province earlier this month.

Kunxun was cloned from a 7-year-old female police dog named Huahuangma, which is considered a great detective (侦探的) dog. A study showed that Kunxun’s DNA is 99. 9 percent similar to Huahuangma’s.

Kunxun will begin training in drug detection, and is to be a grown-up police dog at 10 months. But it would take four to five years to train a dog like Huahuangma. The birth of Kunxun provides the possibility of extending animal clone technology to police dogs, and will significantly reduce the time to train one, Zhao Jianping, Sinogene deputy general manager, told the Global Times on Tuesday. He also noted that the cost of cloning remains a bottleneck for mass production.

Wan Jiusheng, a lead researcher at the Kunming Dog Base of Public Security, told the Science and Technology Daily that Kunxun shows a better potential than the regularly bred Kunming wolfdogs in a series of tests. Wan said Kunxun will be able to become a police dog when it is about 10 months old.

A police officer told the Global Times on Tuesday that preserving the police dog blood has always been a challenge, as traditional breeding methods would dilute (稀释) the original, and the next generation’s genes will be largely beyond control. The successful police dog clone technology would address those problems and lower the elimination (淘汰) rate of police dogs at the puppy training stage, he said.

However, such technology does not mean that the mass production of police dogs has already arrived, as factors like the surroundings and trainers’ skill also play an important role, Wan noted.

Kunxun is not the first cloned police dog. In South Korea, six cloned police dogs first appeared and began patrolling (巡逻) the streets in 2008. The world’s first cloned animal, Dolly the sheep, was born in Scotland in 1996.

【1】What is the benefit of cloning police dogs according to paragraph 3?

    A.Living longer.

    B.Costing less money.

    C.Reducing training time.

    D.Completing harder tasks.

【2】What do Zhao Jianping’s and Wan Jiusheng’s opinions have in common?

A.Clone technology will be used on humans.

B.Cloned animals can help people in some ways.

C.Cloning police dogs hasn’t yet reached mass production.

D.The cloned police dog trainers’ skill is very important.

【3】Where was the world’s first cloned police dog born?

    A.In Scotland.

    B.In China.

    C.In the US.

    D.In South Korea.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary.

    B.A magazine.

    C.A novel.

    D.A guidebook.

  • 28、Earth’s second-longest man-made structure, though, is not a wall, but a fence. It spreads about 5,614 km across eastern Australia and is intended to stop the country’s dingoes (野犬) from hunting sheep, which are farmed mainly to the south.

Australia’s dingo fence does not stand alone. There are millions of kilometres of fences in the world. Some are aimed to limit the movement of animals, some the movement of people, and some only to mark the boundary (界限).

Recently things have been changed by a report from Professor Alex Mclnturff. One discovery he has made is that more than half of the fence research studies focus on just five countries-America, Australia, Botswana, China and South Africa. A second is that only a third of those examined the impact of fences on target species involved, meaning the animals purposely intended to be kept in or out.

In fact, Australian fences intended to keep out dingoes are also barriers (障碍) to long-necked turtles, which travel great distances over land when moving between nesting sites. In Botswana fences built to prevent cattle from wildlife-borne disease influence the migration routes of wildebeest.

Fences are not so bad for every creature. Hawks in Montana gladly sit on newly built fences to hunt small animals, while fence-based spiders in South Africa achieve better results than their tree-based cousins when it comes to catching insects.

Often, though, the winners are creatures that cause trouble for ecological environment. Keeping dingoes out of large parts of Australia has allowed red foxes to increase greatly. Native rodents (啮齿类动物) have suffered as a result. Some have been brought to the edge of extinction.

【1】Which is the purpose of building fences in Australia?

    A.To lengthen the boundary.

B.To help people move around freely.

    C.To protect farm animals.

D.To stop wild animals from being hunted.

【2】What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Fence research studies.

    B.The five countries.

    C.Target species.

    D.The impact of fences.

【3】Which of the following animals benefit from fences?

    A.Long-necked turtles in Australia.

    B.Cattle in Botswana.

    C.Tree-based spiders in South Africa.

    D.Red foxes in Australia.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

    A.The Report by Alex Mclnturff

    B.Fences-Barriers to Wildlife

    C.Earth’s Longest Man-made Structure

    D.Rodents-in Danger of Extinction

  • 29、One of the major concerns of students in any speech class is stage fright. Actually, most people tend to be anxious before doing something important in public. The question is: 【1】?

    Acquire Speaking Experience

【2】. You enroll (注册) in a public speaking course, where you will learn about speech making and gain speaking experience. For most students, the biggest part of stage fright is the fear of the unknown. The more you learn about public speaking and the more speeches you give, the less threatening speech making will become.

    【3】

How much time should you devote to preparing your speeches? A standard rule of thumb is that each minute of speaking time requires one to two hours of preparation time — perhaps more, depending on the amount of research needed for the speech. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.

    Think Positively

Confidence is mostly the well-known power of positive thinking. If you think you can do it, you usually can. On the other hand, if you predict disaster and doom (厄运), that is almost always what you will get. 【4】. Speakers who think negatively about themselves and the speech experience are much more likely to be overcome by stage fright than the speakers who think positively.

    Don’t Expect Perfection

It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. Sometimes an error or two can actually enhance a speaker’s appeal by making her or him seem more human.

As you work on your speeches, make sure you prepare thoroughly and do all you can to get your message across to your listeners. 【5】. Once you free your mind of these burdens, you will find it much easier to approach your speeches with confidence and even with enthusiasm.

    A.Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

B.You should take the first step

    C.Be confident of failure

D.How do you make your speech attractive

E.This is especially true when it comes to public speaking

F.How can you control your nervousness to make it work for you rather than against you

G.But don’t get into a panic about being perfect or about what will happen if you make a mistake

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Today, the events 1 in realistic-looking or-sounding video and audio recordings need never have happened. They can instead be 2 automatically, by powerful computers and machine-learning software. The catch-all term for these computational productions is “deepfakes”.

The term first appeared on Reddit, a messaging board, as the username for an account which was producing 3 videos. An entire community 4 up around the creation of these videos, writing software tools that let anyone automatically 5 one person’s face onto the body of another. Reddit shut the community down, but the technology was out there. Soon it was being applied to political 6 and actors.

Tools for editing media 7 have existed for decades—think Photoshop. The power and peril of deepfakes is that they make fakery cheaper than ever before. Before deepfakes, a powerful computer and a good chunk of a university degree were needed to produce a realistic fake video of someone. Now some photos and an Internet connection are all that is required.

The consequences of cheap, widespread fakery are likely to be 8, albeit slow to unfold. Plenty worry about the possible impact that believable, fake footage of politicians might have on civil society—from a further loss of trust in media to the 9 for electoral distortions. These technologies could also be deployed against softer targets: it might be used, for instance, to bully classmates by creating imagery of them in embarrassing situations. In a world that was already saturated with 10 imagery, deepfakes make it plausible to push that even further.
