六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Dear Linda,

Have you ever been to Bangkok? It’s the capital city of Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia. We are staying here for a few days before we go to the island of Phuket. Some of our friends went to Phuket last year. They said to us, “You should go there because there are beautiful beaches and it is very relaxing.” I will take many photographs and show them to you.

Bangkok is a very interesting city to visit. Yesterday we went to the old part of the city to look at the buildings there. It’s also very crowded and busy. There are lots of people and traffic. This morning we went shopping. Bangkok is a wonderful place to shop for jewelry and clothes. We bought some gold bracelets and necklaces this morning. Before we leave Bangkok, we are going to go back and buy some clothes. Thailand is also called the “Land of Smiles” because the people are very friendly. And it’s true! The people are really nice and they are always smiling.

The food in Bangkok is delicious. I like Thai food, but it is something a little spicy for me. You can also get Chinese food here because many people in Bangkok came originally from China. The Chinese food is very good, and it isn’t as spicy as Thai food. You can get European and American food here, too. Yesterday I saw an American restaurant. I like American food but I don’t want to eat American food in Thailand. I’d rather eat Thai or Chinese food here. I like to try new things when I travel.

The weather has been very hot. Yesterday it rained and got a little cooler, but today it’s very hot again.

    Sally

    根据短文内容,判断下列各句正(T)、误(F)。

1Sally has been in Phuket for a few days.

2It is very noisy in Bangkok.

3The Thai people are not pleasant and friendly.

4Sally likes to eat American food in Thailand.

5You can get Chinese food in Bangkok.

  • 22、   Spain is famous for its tomato festival, called La Tomatina. It happens in a small town on the last Wednesday of August every year. During the festival there are all kinds of activities, but the most exciting part is the tomato fight. It takes place at the end of long celebration (庆祝). You are encouraged to throw tomatoes in the fight. There’ re many stories about how the festival began. One of the stories goes that during the 1940’s, some friends started a tomato fight, while another story is about a local band. Anyway, everyone in Bunol seems to have a different story. Before the tomato fight, there are parades(游行) musical bands, street parties and so on.

On the day of the fight, shopkeepers cover their windows and doors in order to keep away from the tomato fight. At the same time, thousands of tourists and local people come to the town square together. Then large trucks (卡车)full of tomatoes arrive. From the back of the large trucks, a great town band start to throw tomatoes at others. Then the crowds fight back, throwing the tomatoes at anything and anyone. Soon the streets are in the sea of red tomato juice.

Everyone is supposed to obey a small number of rules: You must squash (压烂) the tomato before throwing it and you are allowed to throw nothing but tomatoes.

  • 23、   Is it possible to learn about the history of the world in just one day? Maybe — if you visit an exhibition called “A History of the World in 100 Objects.”

The objects are from the famous British Museum. “A History of the World in 100 Objects” is one of the museum’s greatest exhibitions. Now it comes to China for the very first time. The exhibition opened in the National Museum of China in Beijing on March 2 and will last until May 31.

The British Museum spent four years carefully choosing the 100 objects from its huge collection of eight million things. They had to stand for different times and cultures.

“The objects have to cover the whole world. They range (包括) from a cooking pot to a golden galleon (西班牙大型帆船), from a Stone Age tool to a credit card (信用卡),” Neil MacGregor, former director of the British Museum, wrote in a book. He was in charge of choosing the objects.

For example, there is a seal (印章) that people in the Indus Valley (印度河流域) used in around 2500 B.C.(公元前). There is also a tablet (匾额) that people used in around 700 B.C. in the Middle East. But modern objects like a solar-powered lamp are also on display. They show the results of scientific development.

Of course, there is no lack (缺少) of objects from China. You will see a bronze (青铜) bell from the time of Confucius (孔子). There is also a banknote from the Ming dynasty, showing that China was the first country to use paper money.

  • 24、"I never knew before, Cecil, that you were so fond of drawing," said Aunt Sophia, as she looked over the shoulder of her nephew, who was busy with his pencil. "You really have made great progress."

"I need to do so," cried Cecil, "if I am to carry off the prize for drawing, as I am determined to do this term."

"I should have thought," said the aunt, "that you had little chance against Lee. He is an artist's son, and has used the pencil from his cradle.(摇篮) "

"That will double the pleasure of beating him!" cried Cecil, "I'm working now at this four hours a day; he never draws more than two."

"You are not neglecting(忽视) your Latin for it, I hope? You have had the Latin prize every term for these three years past," said Aunt Sophia.

"Yes," replied Cecil, with a proud smile; "there is no boy in our class who can match me in that, though Russell is now working hard. But I am not content with one prize: I cannot rest till I have won the paint-box for drawing, of which Tom Lee makes so sure. It would be glorious to beat the son of an artist on his own ground!"

"Take care," said his aunt, "that you do not lose the Latin prize in trying for what you are not likely to gain.”

On the evening of the day on which the names of the prize-winners were read out, Cecil came home from school long-faced. His looks told his aunt enough to make her spare him the pain of questions; but his little sister Rosey was not so thoughtful.

"Cecil," she cried, "tell me, are you to get the two prizes?"

"No, not even one. I was so busy trying to beat Lee that I could not hold my ground against Russell." Cecil threw himself into a sofa in an angry mood.

Their aunt silently hoped that the lesson might prove worth the pain which it cost.

1What made Cecil keep practicing drawing?

    A. His interest in drawing.   B. His strong will to win the prize.

    C. Lee’s being the son of an artist.   D. Russell’s working hard on Latin.

2Which of the following words best describes Aunt Sophia?

    A. Thoughtful   B. Strict   C. Strong   D. Cruel

3Why did Cecil fail to win any prizes?

    A. He didn’t put in enough time.   B. He had no talent

    C. He wanted to succeed too much   D. He was too tired

4The word “content with” in the passage means ________.

    A. strong in   B. satisfied with   C. worried about   D. surprised at

5We can know from passage that________.

    A. Cecil was fond of drawing

    B. Cecil lost because Lee spent more time drawing

    C. Aunt Sophia worried Cecil might lose both prizes before competitions

    D. Aunt Sophia thought Cecil was good at drawing

In April next year, I am going to run the London Marathon! The London Marathon is one of the most f1 marathons in the world. Last year there were 36, 748 runners! Many runners choose to run for different charities, so often you can see runners in fancy dress-from people wearing clown costumes, to people dressed up as chickens, to cartoon c2.

I’m very excited because, although I have run half marathons before and done 5K and 10K races, I have never run a world marathon. It will be a fantastic c3. A marathon is over 26 miles (42 kilometres), so I have a lot of training to do before the big day!

I always make sure I enjoy every run I go on. I love running a4 it is much slower than cycling. It a5 you to really see everything around you properly. I’m not a very fast runner, but I have been a member of lots of different running clubs, and I have made so many fiends through running.

As well as the marathon being a fitness goal. I am also running for charity. It enables me to k6 on because it motivates me e7 in winter, when it is cold and dark. I don’t always want to go out for a run, but knowing that I am supporting a good cause always helps me. Luckily, I won’t be running in fancy dress-I don’t think I have enough energy to carry a costume around the course! But I have been advised to put my name on the front of my jersey so people can cheer my name on the big day!
