  • 25、   In a faraway country, there were two carpenters (木匠) who were both so good at their job that no one could tell who was better.

One day, the country's king thought of a way to figure out which one was better. He would have them compete against each other in a contest. The winner would become the official royal(皇家的)carpenter.

The king sent for the two carpenters and the contest began. The carpenters were given three days to carve (雕刻) a wooden mouse. Whoever carved the most lifelike mouse would be the winner.

The first carpenter carved a fine mouse with vivid (生动的) and lifelike feature. The second carpenter's mouse, however, looked quite rough. In fact, it hardly even looked like a mouse at all.

The king and his ministers (大臣) agreed that the first carpenter was the winner.

The second carpenter said, "This judgment is unfair. We should ask a cat which mouse looks the most realistic. Cats can recognize mice much better than humans, after all."

The king thought this was a good idea. He ordered his ministers to catch several cats and bring them to judge (评判) the carpenters' mice. Surprisingly, all of the cats were more attracted to the second carpenter's mouse.

The king asked the second carpenter, "How did you make the cats believe that your mouse looked more real?" The carpenter said, "Your Majesty, if you look closely, you can see that I carved a mouse holding a fishbone! The cats care not about how real it looks, but how delicious it might taste."

1Whose carved mouse looked quite rough?

A.Neither of the two carpenters' B.Both of the two carpenters'

    C.The first carpenter's D.The second carpenter's

2Why did they catch some cats to judge the two carpenters' works?

A.Because they thought cats could recognize mice much better than humans.

B.Because people didn't like the two carpenters' carved mice.

C.Because they wanted to cancel the difficult contest.

D.Because they all wanted to become the official royal carpenter.

3What’s the correct order of the following things?

They caught some cats to judge the two carpenters' carved mice.

The second carpenter became the final winner at last.

The king and his ministers agreed the first carpenter was the winner.

The king held a contest to choose the best carpenter.

    A.①②③④ B.④③①② C.③②①④ D.④②①③

4What's the best title of this article?

A.Two Silly Carpenters. B.An Unfair Contest.

C.A Clever Carpenter. D.A Mouse and Cats.

  • 26、Marco Polo was from Venice, Italy. In 1271, at age 17, Marco went on a trip with his father and uncle to China. Today people often travel to different places around the world. But it was very hard for people from Europe to visit China then. After three and a half years, the Polos reached China on 1275.

While he was there, Marco Polo worked  for Kublai Khan, the emperor(皇帝)of China. He was able to learn and experience many things that were new to Europeans. In his diary, he wrote, “Kublai Khan’s palace is the greatest I’ve ever seen. The streets of the new capital, Daidu,  are so straight and so wide.” Paper money also took him by surprise, since it was not yet in use in the West at that time. Homes were heated with “black stones... which burn like wood.” These stones were coal, and most of the Europeans knew little about it then.

After 17 years in China, Marco and his family finally returned to Venice in 1292. After he returned home, Marco completed a book about his trip, full of facts about his wonderful experiences in China.

  • 27、 Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do, be and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow yourself to make your life happen.

Successful and happy people imagine how their life should be and they set lots of goals. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it in this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind(her goal) which is laid out for her on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver. But she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be?

Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren't difficult to set, and they aren't difficult to reach. It's up to you to find out what your goals really are. You are the one who must decide what to achieve and at what direction to aim your life.

Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly(有规律地), and have more power. Like a contract(合同)with yourself, they are harder to forget. Also when you write your goals in a specific way you are able to make yourself always aware of situations that will bring you nearer to your goals.

【1】The writer gave the example of two drivers to show   .

    B. the foolishness of the second driver

    C. the importance of having a map

    D. the foolishness of the first driver

【2】 According to the article, the most important thing in realizing one's dream is to   .

    B. have a clear understanding of what he or she wants in life

    C. let others help him or her to make his or her dream come true

    D. let others understand him or her first, then work with him or her

【3】According to the article, successful people are different from unsuccessful ones because ·

    A. the unsuccessful people always set unrealistic plans for themselves

    B. the unsuccessful people make plans for everything but can not work hard

    C. the successful people set goals for everything and can get help from others

    D. the successful people set goals in their lives and make plans to carry it out

【4】According to the article, if you want to succeed, you must   .

    A. study hard    B. have a goal and achieve it

Paul was my little brother, and he was special. He was different from me because he sat in a wheelchair, and he was blind. Lots of times when we walked with Paul, other kids came over and asked us why he was in his chair and why he couldn’t s1 . Paul h6 ever complained(抱怨). He went along with whatever the rest of us wanted to do. One time when he had a fever, he got uncomfortable, but he never shouted or fought or asked me to switch the TV channel.

Sometimes Paul let me put things in his hand. We played a kind of guessing game. I put different toys there for him to f7. He was always surprised when I let him hold something new.

Paul was my friend. He couldn’t talk to me like most of my friends, and he couldn’t run outside to play. But he was t8 for all the peaceful times, and he had the best smile in the world.

I was 19 to grow up with him as his sister. He helped me to realize that there is a good side to every situation, if we simply m10 the choice to find it.
