24、 Shameem was born in a small village in Pakistan. In her village, it was a tradition to keep girls inside their homes. They were not allowed to get an education.
Fortunately, Shameem's uncle, a university teacher, wanted to give her a chance to see the world. He offered Shameem a chance to attend school. So she became the only girl student in her class.
However, Shameem struggled to complete her schooling. To get permission for college, she went on three-day- hunger strike(抗议). After graduating from college, Shameem got a position in non-profit organization(非营利性组织) working to help women in rural(农村的) areas.

25、How can you buy a meal for lunch without any money in your pocket? Students in Class 9, Grade 8 at Mountain and Lake Middle School in Chengdu, Sichuan, have their ways. They give out flyers(传单), draw portraits(人物素描) and work as waiters.
The class, working in eight groups, finished the activity, Experiencing Life for Seven Hours, on March 18. “I found students waste their food in the canteen,” the class teacher, Deng Guirong, told Teens. “So I held this activity to help them understand how hard it is to make money.”
Jiang Yao, 15, and his group members stood in the streets giving out flyers for about two hours and got the money for their lunch. Then they worked as waiters in a pizza restaurant—cleaning the floor and toilets and getting food for guests. “We were busy all along, so we were terribly exhausted after the day’s hard work,” said Jiang. “We each got a pizza as a prize, which tasted much better than one I ate with my parents before.”
When Xie Ni’s group didn’t make any money in three hours, the members became nervous about their lunch. The 14 years old girl came up with the idea of drawing portraits to sell, “I sold four portraits and one tourist even paid us 100 yuan for his portrait.” said Xie.
Xie realized that life is really hard. “We have to work hard to get the money to pay for even a simple meal.” Xie said, “We must value the happy life today.”
On top of making money, each group was asked to do at least five good deeds during the seven hours. Students helped the old cross the road, gave directions to tourists and turned in a lost bus card.

New research has found the longest living animal on Earth with a backbone is a shark.
The research, published in Science Magazine, found the Greenland shark is the longest living animal with a backbone in the world. The gray-colored sharks live in the cold water of the Arctic and are named after Greenland, the world’s largest island. After examining one of these sharks, scientists decided it was born in the icy water about 400 years ago and died out recently.
An international team of biologists and physicists was able to estimate (估计) the ages of 28 dead female Greenland sharks by studying the lenses of their eyes. It is a new way to learn the age of an animal. Eight of the sharks were probably 200 years old or more, and could even have been 300 years old. That would make them older than some whales, which earlier were believed to have been the oldest animals at about 211 years old, according to the Associated Press.
This discovery also means that Greenland sharks can live more than three times longer than humans. Many people these days can expect to live into their eighties. African elephants average about 70 years. The oldest of the Greenland sharks the scientists studied was nearly 5 meters long. It was thought to have been 392 years old when it was caught four years ago. However, because the testing method is so new, it is not exact.
The study’s lead author is Julius Nielsen, a marine biologist from Denmark. He says the 392 number could have an error range of 120 years in either direction. That means the shark was probably born sometime between the years 1500 and 1740, with 1620 being the most likely.
'It's an estimate. It's not a determination,' Nielsen said. 'It is the best we can do.'
Even at the lowest age, the shark would have been 272 years old when it died and still would be the longest-living animal with a backbone, Nielsen said.
'I don't know why they get as old, but I hope someone will find out,' Nielsen said.
