24、 The class teacher thought that hobbies were important for children. So she encouraged all her students to have one, and sometimes she arranged hobby shows for their parents to see as a result.
One morning the teacher told the class to have a holiday and get their hobby things to school before 5 p.m. A hobby show would be held the following afternoon.
So in the afternoon, the students with nothing to show did their lessons at school as usual, while the lucky ones had a holiday to go home for their hobby works.
When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. “I don’t believe Tommy has a hobby,” she thought. However, at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection of butterflies (蝴蝶) in a glass case. The teacher liked the samples (标本) very much and put them on a desk in the classroom. But, to her surprise, Tommy picked them up again and began to leave.
“What are you doing, Tommy?” She asked. “Those things must stay here until tomorrow afternoon. That’s when the parents are coming to see them.”
“I know that,” answered Tommy, “and I will bring them back tomorrow, but my big brother doesn’t want them to be out of our house at night.”
“But, aren’t the butterflies yours?” asked the teacher.
“No,” answered Tommy. “They are my brother’s.”
“But Tommy, you should show your own hobby here, not somebody else’s!”
“I know that,” answered Tommy. What surprised her most was the answer. “My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies.”

25、 Have you ever heard someone say, “You completely look like you’re a Jessica” or someone similar? People seem to think that they know what kind of person a “Jessica” or a “Michael” looks like. Why is this?
According to a research in the Journey of personality (个性) and Social Psychology, humans like to connect people’s names with their looks (长相), and can even guess someone’s name according to how they look. Researchers at the Herbrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, collected thousands of photos of people’s faces. They put a name under each photo. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct. The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38 percent of the time. It seems that the faces really give them clues (线索) about someone’s name, Reader’s Digest reported. However, the volunteers were not as good at guessing the real names of people who used nicknames (昵称) more often than their real names. This may show that a person’s looks are influenced by their name only if they use it often.
This kind of face-name matching happens because we often become what other people expect us to become,” Ruth Mayo from the university told science news website Eurek Alert.
The researchers believe there are also stereotype (刻板印象) about names. For example, the volunteers usually think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. They may think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be just like the flowers that they are named for.
【1】The purpose of the research is to find out________.

I recently read a book called The Shawshank Redemption(《肖申克的救赎》). It tells a story that is both shocking and full of hope.
Set in 1947, it tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who was sentenced(判处) to life in Shawshank State Prison. He was accused of killing two people, although he didn’t do it. After years of suffering in the prison, he started to make friends with others and won their respect with his outstanding accounting (会计学的) abilities.
But Andy never stopped wanting freedom. During his 20 years in prison, he had been digging a hole with a small pickaxe (篙头) every day and hiding the hole with a poster. As his well-prepared escape plan was put into practice, the suspense (悬念) in the book keeps me on edge until the end.
Famous Irish writer Oscar Wilde once said “We’re all in the gutter (臭水沟), but some of us are looking at stars.” This saying perfectly sums up Andy’s life. The thing that makes the biggest impression on me is Andy’s love for the beauty of life. He plays a song over the prison’s broadcast system, even though he was not allowed to do so. When the singer’s voice was heard, the prisoners stopped talking, immersing themselves in the music and letting the beauty flood in.
The goal of this book is to show readers the power of strength, hope and patience.

28、 Why Short Stories Are Best for English Learning
You get more time to focus on words. When a text is short, you can have more time to learn how every single word is used and what importance it has in the text. This is more useful for those who are 【1】 (begin) of English. You can read a whole story at a time. Attention length is very important for learning. And the ability to finish a story gives you more time 【2】 (understand) it. Short stories are written to give you 【3】 (much)information with less effort (努力).
It is best for consistency (一致性). It is much easier to read one story every day than trying to read a big novel that never 【4】 (seem) to end.
You can share them easily in a group. Since short stories can 【5】 (read) in any place, they are perfect for book clubs and learning circles. Most of the time these groups do not work because members have no time to read. Short stories are the perfect way for them.
You can focus more on ideas. Language is less about words and more about the meanings behind them. If you spend all your time 【6】 (learn) vocabulary and grammar, you will never be able to speak a language 【7】 (smooth) because you will have little to talk about. Short stones give you the chance to understand big ideas in a short text.
In a word, short stories will not only improve your English reading comprehension (理解力) but also open your mind to different worlds.
