24、 Heimaey, an island in Iceland, is home to just about 4,200 people. But each spring, more than1.5million puffins (海鹦) visit Heimaey and its neighboring islands. They go there to breed(繁殖). Around August, puffin chicks head for the ocean.That’s when the trouble begins.
Puffin chicks usually follow the light of the moon to the sea. But Heimaey’s bright lights make them unable to think and act right.Each year,a large number of them end up lost—-or worse. Often,some are hit by cars or eaten by cats.
Luckily, there is the Puffling Patrol.Each breeding season,the children of Heimaey work together to form search groups. At night they go to the streets carrying flashlights and cardboard boxes. “When you see a bird, you try to corner it and get it into the box,” Eldur Hansen said. The 14-year-old boy has caught several puffins this way. No one knows exactly when or how the Puffling Patrol got its start.But each year, it saves thousands of puffin chicks.
Puffins are now listed as a vulnerable species(易危物种).The main reason is that the number of small fish in the ocean is dropping. This is because of overfishing, pollution and rising ocean temperatures. Puffins need the fish for food.
Scientists worry puffins will die out if ocean temperatures continue to rise.But the Puffling Patrol inspires them a lot. “The message is that people can make a difference,” says Dr. Stephen W.Kress,an expert in seabird protection.

25、The man who thinks he can
-Walter Wintle
If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,
It is almost a certain—you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in this world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed(大大超过), you are;
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can!
【1】According to the writer, if you want to win, you should_________.
A. ask for help B. believe yourself
C. believe you are outclassed D. follow a fellow's will
【2】From this poem, we can learn that success begins with________.

26、Plastic can be found almost in everything. That includes toys, cars and computers. Most plastic cans should be recycled. However, many types of plastic are often thrown away. Much of the plastic rubbish ends up in the ocean. It gets there mainly from litter on land and over-flowing sewers (下水道).The rest is thrown directly into the seas. It's reported that about 8 million tons of plastic flows into the seas each year. That's equal to a garbage truck full of plastic every minute. Plastic can not fully break down, so once it reaches the ocean it will float on the sea or sink into the bottom and then it may kill the wildlife.
In response to this problem, the United Nations (U.N.) hosted its first-ever Ocean Conference. At the conference, the UN’s 193 member nations reached an agreement. They agreed to try their best to protect the ocean from pollution. "The sea has a special relationship with all of us in the world, but the relationship is under threat now," said Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN.
Countries in Asia have agreed to take some measures. The promise from China, Thailand,and Indonesia is hopeful. They produce up to 60% of all marine plastic waste-because of leakage (泄露) from underdeveloped garbage-collection facilities.
Good news is that some scientists and companies worldwide are developing ways to keep plastic out of the ocean. They are trying to remove it and recycle it. For example, the Dell, a computer company, is creating laptop packaging (包装) from recycled plastic rubbish.
Dell predicts that the project will prevent 16,000 pounds of plastic from entering the ocean.“We hope to encourage more companies to do something for the growing environmental issue," Carly Tatum says, who is a Dell spokeswoman.
However, environmentalists are not so optimistic. They warn that there is no quick way to prevent plastic pollution. Maybe the real solution is that every country in the world should make stronger laws on the plastic pollution.
【1】According to the passage, how do people usually deal with most plastic?
A.By recycling it.
B.By burying it.
C.By throwing it away.
D.By making it harmless
【2】What does "this problem"in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The ocean is seriously polluted
B.The wildlife in the ocean is dying out.
C.Plastic fails to fully break down.
D.Too much plastic rubbish flows into the ocean.
【3】What does the writer think is probably the best way to prevent plastic pollution worldwide?
A.Producing less plastic waste.
B.Taking measures to recycle plastic.
C.Encouraging all countries to make related stricter laws.
D.Developing more ways to keep plastic out of the ocean.
【4】What's the topic (话题) of the passage?
A.Plastic pollution in the ocean.
B.The influence of plastic on the environment.
C.Debates on plastic recycling.
D.Measures on protecting the ocean.
27、You and I can tell one face from another, but can computers do the same with few mistakes? At an earlier time, many people thought it was impossible, but now, the development of technology has made it come true.
New technology like facial recognition (脸部识别) technology helps to make our lives better and more convenient in many ways. People can easily come into their office buildings and check e-mails by using it. It can also help the police to find missing kids and bad people by sending the pictures taken from video cameras on the streets to the facial recognition system. More and more shoppers use their e-wallets with the new technology to pay for things they buy in the shopping malls and many kinds of stores.
In the fall of 2017, Apple even used this technology to open the smart-phone in no more than one second. However, what is facial recognition technology and how does the system make it?
First, facial recognition technology checks the space between eyes, the eye color, the ear size and the lip thickness. Then the system makes a record of your face and saves it in the database (数据库). That is to say, if you want to get the right to go into some places or to do something, you just look at the camera and let your picture run through the database.
Once the system checks your face and finds that it is correct, you can then get the right to go into the places or to do something.
However, is there any way to fool the facial recognition system? The answer is yes. Although it is an amazing technology, it sometimes doesn’t work. The following are some examples.
【1】What can we know about facial recognition technology from Paragraph 2?
A.It helps us a lot in our lives.
B.It helps us go anywhere fast.
C.It lets stores make more money.
D.It is the most useful technology worldwide.
【2】What did Apple use to open the smartphone immediately in 2017?
A.A special key.
B.A set of numbers.
C.Special patterns.
D.Facial recognition technology.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The camera.
B.The information of the face.
C.The smartphone.
D.The right place.
【4】What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 4?
A.How the system works.
B.How much the system costs.
C.Why the system is so popular.
D.How many faces the system checks.
【5】Which of the following may the writer talk about in the following paragraph?
A.Why the technology is convenient.
B.When and where the technology can’t work.
C.How the technology becomes more popular.
D.Who can make the most use of the technology.
