24、A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn’t built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery and cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.
Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war more than 1,500 years ago, and built homes there. Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt (融化).
Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower.
【1】Which is the most possible way for people in Venice to get around in the passage?
A. On foot. B. By boat. C. By car. D. By bike.
【2】Why is Venice still getting lower and lower?
A. Because too many people live there.
B. Because the rising temperature has made the ice melt.
C. Because lots of bridges have been built.
D. Because the underground water is rising.
【3】What seasons are dangerous for Venice because of high waters?
A. Summer and autumn. B. Autumn and winter.
C. Summer and winter. D. Spring and winter.
【4】The passage is mainly about____________.
A. the waterways of Venice B. the history of Venice
C. the scenery of Venice D. the problem of Venice
25、 The George Washington School had been standing for more than 100 years. The school building was in good shape, but behind it was an old basketball court. The court’s surface had been broken and was overgrown with weeds(种子). The fence(篱笆) around the court was too old, and parts of it lay on the ground. The basketball hoops(篮圈)were bent and rusted(生锈).
One cold day in February, Mr Garson, a biology teacher, was taking a walk during his lunch break. He passed the old basketball court. “What an ugly sight!” he said, in a low and sad voice. As he looked at the empty court, he imagined. In his mind, he pictured something quite different from what he actually saw.
Mr Garson asked the school board for money to turn his vision into reality. In April he organized a group of community volunteers to tear up the old basketball court and take it away. Then he tried to let a local farmer bring trucks of good soil(土)free of charge, which several students spread over the field. A group of parents volunteered to build a new fence around the land. Mr Garson bought some garden tools. He also bought seeds and young plants. In May students planted tomatoes, potatoes, corn, onions, and peppers. In one place they planted some kinds of flowers that would come out through the summer and autumn.
Two students checked the garden and watered it every day. On Saturdays throughout the summer, groups of students gathered to weed the garden and harvested what was ripe(成熟的). In September students enjoyed eating fresh food from the George Washington garden for lunch. Most days there were fleshy cut flowers that it would be ready for planting again in the spring.

26、
The distance between ancient Rome and ancient China was about 4,000 miles by land. There were terrible deserts and high mountains on the way. It was a very dangerous trip.
For a very long time, the ancient Romans did not know who was making this wonderful cloth called silk. The Romans first discovered pieces of silk in the goods they took from some of dead people they had conquered (征服). But those people did not know where the silk was made. They only traded for the silk.
The Romans tried to find more traders as they came into villages to trade silk for other goods. But the traders did not know who made the silk either. In fact, the trading along the Silk Road was a relay (接力)system. One trader would travel for a while, stop and trade, and return home. The next trader would continue, stop and trade, and return home. And so it went. No trader made the whole trip because the trip was too dangerous.
As silk was becoming more and more popular, the demand for it in ancient Rome had grown. Ancient Rome had treasure. They hoped to find “The Silk People” to trade for more silk. But most never returned because they could not make it through the desert. They had to turn around and come back.
This went on for a very long time.
As the years went by along the Silk Road, temples appeared. There were even cities built on the oases (绿洲). It was never easy to travel by land from ancient China to ancient Rome. But it was worth it. Ancient Rome traded treasure for ancient China’s silk and spices. In fact, more things travelled along the Silk Road than traders and goods. Ideas travelled along the Silk Road as well. The ideas changed the world.
【1】Why was it difficult for the ancient Romans to know the silk maker?
A.Because the silk makers didn’t want to be conquered.
B.Because the silk makers wanted to make more money.
C.Because the traders never saw the silk makers.
D.Because the method of making silk was a secret.
【2】Which of the words has the similar meaning to “demand” in paragraph 4?
A.Interest B.Price C.Need D.Value
【3】What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.The discovery of ancient Rome. B.The importance of the Silk Road.
C.The history and value of the Silk Road. D.The international trade in ancient times.
【4】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The Silk Road made a great difference to the world.
B.The ancient Romans wanted to conquer the traders.
C.Silk was the only thing that people traded along the Silk Road.
D.After building the temples, the travel was much easier than before.
27、 How can you change negative ( 极其负面的) thoughts? Many people suggest thinking of something bright and happy. However, scientists from Queen’s University in Canada said that there might be another way: by walking like a happy person.
“It is not surprising that our feeling affects how we walk, but we want to see whether the way we move also affects how we feel,” explained Nikolaus Troje, the lead scientist, to The Independent.
Scientists believe that the way we remember emotional ( 情绪的) messages is affected by our mood. Those who feel sad remember negative information far more easily than positive messages, especially when the information is about them.
In order to prove(证明)this, Troje and his team watched 47 people walking on the treadmill (跑步机) by cameras. Half of the people were encouraged to follow a depressive walking style, while the other half moved like a happy person. Walking speed was kept the same for both groups.
Meanwhile, the scientists read out a list of positive and negative words, asking people to decide whether or not each word described them well. Afterwards, people were asked to recall as many words as they could remember.
As expected, those who followed a depressed walk recalled more negative words than those that walk in a happy manner.
This shows that our walk influences the way we deal with information. And the scientists believe that using a happy walking style could help with treatment for depression.

How often do you let other people’s nonsense(胡说) change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed for the airport. We were driving when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space r【1】 in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brake, slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started shouting at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really f【2】. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck(垃圾车)”.
He e【3】 that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it personally: Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be happier. Don’t take their garbage and s【4】 it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s i【5】 in your life. Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his r【6】 that you remember bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you recall them more frequently.
So, Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the o【7】 who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!
