24、 Prana was a beautiful dog, whose name means “breath of life”. Although he died several years ago, I can still remember the days we spent together and what he has taught me about love.
I have two apple trees in the garden. Prana loved apples. When he went outside, he’d catch an apple and take it into the house to eat later. The apples had been on the ground and were often dirty so I wasn’t always happy that Prana had brought them into the house.
It was an autumn day in America, but it was very cold. A big snow fell and we had not done anything for its coming. On that special day, Prana went outside and I watched him through the window. I noticed that he was madly digging holes and bringing the apples to the ground so they could be seen above the snow. I did not know why he was doing this. He seemed to want to do something special.
When I called him back, he had his usual one apple in his mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The garden was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for his bird friends to eat. He knew that they wouldn’t have stored enough food for the coming winter!

25、As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and especially chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.
One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail into her house every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.
Mailboxes were sometimes used for other things. One note left in a mailbox read, "Nat, take these eggs to Marian. She’s baking a cake and doesn’t have any eggs. "A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank.
Later, father died. As I drove home, I noticed two green and red mailboxes made by father were still on each side of Main Street. Each box had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.
When I saw Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. He asked, " What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?"
“The letters?”
“I guess you never knew.”
"Knew what?”
Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year.”
I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families.
For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.

27、Guilin is my favorite city in China because of its beauty, its waterways, its cafes, and most of all because I met my wife there. It is her hometown and we will both retire there in a few years.
Not only is Guilin a fascinating city, but there are many interesting places to visit within a short drive from there.
The Ling Canal is the oldest canal in the world. It was built about 2,200 years ago and connects two major river systems, the Yangtze and the Pearl River.
The Longsheng Rice Terraces (梯田) is another manmade wonder that was built around 650 years ago.I have some photos of both of these places in my China Daily homepage Albums.
The Gudong Waterfall Park is another attraction that is worth visiting. The hike to the top of all these waterfalls isn't very difficult and if you want, you can take a ride to the bottom on a personal rail car (机动轨道车) that you control the speed with a brake.
If you want, you can also climb up some of the waterfalls with the help of chains that are placed for the convenience of amateur climbers (业余登山者).
I have only been in Guilin during the winter and spring, but my wife tells me it gets pretty hot in the summer time. That's OK because I grew up in the Midwest of the US where it gets very hot and humid during the summer months.
But in Guilin almost everything is within walking distance and if you need to go further the buses come by every 5 minutes on the busy streets and every 10-15 minutes just about everywhere else. There are plenty of taxis, too, and most trips are only 6 yuan. It's a perfect place to retire.
