24、 Muriel’s home was a pleasant three-bedroomed house in a suburb(郊区) of Manchester. The family, made up of two girls and a boy, had been raised there. One had already left home, and the day was not far off when the other two would leave for London and the start of their careers.
The house now lacked for nothing. The expensive days schooling and providing for a growing family were over. The husband’s salary as an engineer provided holidays in Spain, a-year-old family car, a colour television (not rented now, thanks to a bargain offer in a January sale).
Life was good until Muriel, returning from shopping in the city centre, found she had been burgled. It was bad enough that the windows in the dining-room had been forced open and $20 in cash in the kitchen drawer stolen, but the damage aged Muriel immediately.
A booted foot had broken the television screen. House plants had been torn from their pots and threw against walls. There was a horror in the kitchen. Three fish were dead on the floor, their heads stamped and crushed(碎). The water from the fish tank had soaked(浸泡) the fitted carpet. Kitchen drawers had been pulled out and the contents were everywhere over the floor.
It was the same story in each room. Muriel found she could not sleep. The extra sherry(雪莉酒) at night did not work. The doctor later gave her tranquilizers(镇静剂). Finally her husband made the only decision he could. They had to sell and move from the home where they had planned to spend the rest of their lives.
The tragedy is that each year there are many thousands of Muriels.

25、Izzy, nine years old, saved her father's life after he suffered a serious allergic reaction(过敏反应). She restarted his father’s heart by kicking him in the chest(胸) after he fell down at home and stopped breathing.
Izzy's mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father, so decided to use CPR(心脏复苏术).
However, she quickly discovered her arms weren't strong enough, so she stamped on her father's chest. Debbie then did some more chest compressions(按压) until the doctor arrived .
Izzy, who has got a bravery award by her school, said, “I just kicked him really hard. My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn't strong enough to use hands. I was quite scared. The doctor said I might be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.”
"She's a little star," said Debbie, "I was upset but Izzy really helped. I just can’t believe what she did. I really think all children should be taught first aid. Izzy did CPR then the doctor came. Colm had to have more treatment on the way to the hospital and we've got to see an expert."
Truck driver Colm, 35, suffered a mystery allergic reaction on Saturday and was taken to hospital, but was sent home only for it to happen again the next day. 26、 Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes. So in 2007, the city began a scheme(计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib scheme(bicycle freedom), people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only 1 euro a day or 29 euros a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kilograms). They are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 metro stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this — not even in France. Many years ago, Lyon started a free bicycle scheme. However, not everybody in Paris thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle; they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all of our traffic problems, of course. But it might reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. Everyone knows about global warming. We know this is partly because rainforests are disappearing, but it’s also because there’s so much pollution in the world. We can help improve the situation right here. The Velib bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
“There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities,” the spokesman added. “But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise. The problems in our environment will only get worse.”
【1】How did Paris improve the situation of its traffic problem?
A.It built many bicycle stations. B.It is renting heavy bicycles to visitors.
C.It sold more bicycles to people. D.It is providing shared bikes for people.
【2】How much will you have to pay if you use the bike for 45 minutes?
A.29 euros. B.1.5 euros. C.1 euro. D.Nothing.
【3】According to the city spokesman, which of the following statements is true?
A.Traffic is not the only cause of global warming.
B.There aren’t any solutions to the city’s traffic problems.
C.Riding bikes is a perfect way to solve pollution problems.
D.It’s better to drive a car than to ride a bike to travel across the city.
【4】What of the following is NOT a way to deal with global warming?
A.Using bicycles often. B.Protecting the rainforests.
C.Reducing factory fumes. D.Traveling across a city by car.
【5】Which of the following may be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Traffic Jams in Paris B.Taking Action for the Environment
C.Bicycles and the Future D.The Advantages of the Velib Scheme
27、Fire can help people in many ways. But can also be very harmful. Fire can heat water warm your houses, give light, and cook food. But fire can burn things ,too. It can burn trees, houses, animals, or people. Sometimes big fires can burn forests.
Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. But there are many interesting, old stories about the first time a man or woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man very, very long time ago. He went up to the sun by a rope and brought fire down.
Today people know how to make a fire with matches. Children sometimes like to play with them. But matches can be very dangerous. One match can burn a piece of paper, and then it might burn a house. A small fire can become a big fire very fast.
Fires kill many people every year. So you must be careful with matches. You should also learn to put out fires. Fires need oxygen. Without oxygen they die. There is oxygen in the air. Cover a fire with water, sand, or in an emergency, with your coat or something else. This keeps the air away from a fire and kills it.
Be careful with fire, and it will help you. Be careless with fire, and it will burn you.
