1、 What does it mean to be a Chinese? According to a survey, more than 40% of Chinese people believe the Chinese love the country and their families. 1. About one-third of foreign people describe the Chinese as hard-working and creative people. From 1931 to 1945, millions of soldiers lost their lives in the war against Japanese aggression. 2. After 1949, plenty of people worked day and night for the development of China.
While the love of the country joins the people together, family plays a big role in traditional Chinese culture. Aaron Cedillo, an English teacher in Beijing, said, “My Chinese friends get married and have babies when they turn a certain age. 3. 他们选择或者放弃一份工作时,首先考虑的是家人。”
Besides, the characters of being hard-working and creative also come to light. Sheryl, a Malaysian student at Zhejiang University, said Chinese people were hard-working when she saw some men send the package. She said, “4. 似乎那些人从不需要休息。” A foreign university professor has found Chinese students in the lab could always come up with new ideas. “I’m really surprised,” he said. 5. The past 70 years saw China’s rapid rise to become an important country in the world. During the process, the international community, including Chinese people themselves, has got a clearer understanding of Chinese traits(品质).

Ryan Hrejac is a kid who is 15 and lives in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America, and India might never have been built. He travels the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the need of safe drinking water in many developing countries.
“Everybody can do something,” Ryan says.
Ryan's efforts didn't begin in a far-off place, though, but right at home in Kemptvlle, Ontario. In 1998, when he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. His teacher said that some of the children even died from drinking bad water.
So Ryan decided to take action. He did housework for his parents and for neighbors to make some money. He spoke to schools, churches, clubs about his idea. The word spread, and donations(捐献)began coming in. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2, 000, enough to dig one well.
An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief(CPAR)chose a place for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda, eastern Africa.
After the first well was built, “the ripple effect took over,” Ryan said, “and one goal led to another.”
He founded Ryan's Well Foundation(基金会)four years ago to educate people about the importance of water and help more people get clean water with others' help. Now the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million and built 255 wells that could serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries.
Its website lists some of the famous people Ryan has met and the honors he has received.
Ryan isn't bragging(吹噓). “The best people I've met are the other kids who want to help, too.” he said. “The only reason I accept honors is that each word I say when I get one might help one more person.”
【1】What problem does Ryan want to solve?
A.The poor condition of schools.
B.The influence of war on children.
C.The illness caused by pollution.
D.The need of safe drinking water.
【2】Ryan himself raised money by ________.

25、 You may see some herons (鹭) in the park using bread or insects as a tool to catch fish. This is just one of the ways in which birds have changed their living habits because of humans. Now, a new study has found that birds that are able to change their behaviors in this way are less likely to die out. These changes may include adding new food to their diet, developing new hunting skills, or living in a new environment. These new behaviors have long been considered advantages in avoiding extinction(灭绝).
To test this on a world level, scientists studied reports of new behaviors among bird species. The study includes more than 3,800 new behaviors among8,600 species of birds. They concluded that the more new hunting skills the birds master, the larger population they will have. In other words, extinction risk reduces as the number of new skills increases.
However, it is stressed that innovation (革新) can only protect birds from changes in their living place, but not from over-hunting or harm from other species. It should be noticed that some animals are very dangerous to some birds: snakes can attack little birds, some hungry mice stole birds' eggs. Above all, humans often mean the greatest danger to birds. They always take up too much space, cut down millions of trees and even cause various kinds of pollution.
This shows that, unlike what is usually believed, the ability to innovate protects animals from some but not all of the rapid changes in the environment.
【1】Why do birds change their living habits?

B.Innovation in hunting skills has an effect on birds' living.
C.The ability of innovation can protect birds from all danger.
D.Birds can change their hunting skills in the new environment.
26、 I caught a cold. It was really a bad cold. Actually, the doctor later told me that I has the flu. The flu was so bad that I couldn’t even swallow(吞咽)!
I knew I should drink more fluids — water, soup or juice — and maybe take some medicine. But I couldn’t. Each time I tried to swallow, it hurt so much. So my dad took me to the hospital.
A doctor came in. He looked over my throat. After his examination, he said, “Nothing serious to worry about. You have the flu.”
“Why is it so bad?” I asked. “Can you prescribe(给……开药) me some medicine so that I don’t suffer so much?”
“No,” the doctor said. “No medicine can cure(治疗) your flu. Your body’s immune system(免疫系统) will fight the sickness for you.”
I had not realized this in the past. Everything had always seemed so natural. Now, I understand that even a simple thing like swallowing is like a miracle(奇迹). My body does these jobs amazingly well — and yet quietly, without my noticing.
I don’t remember how many days it took me to cure, but I do remember what my father told me. He said that we should all be thankful to our bodies and the miracle of how they are built.
