24、 If you go to the beautiful city of New Orleans, you will see a statue(雕像)which stands in a little square there. It is the statue of a woman whose eyes look at you like your mother's.
It is the statue of a woman named Margaret Haughery. When Margaret was a tiny baby, her father and mother died, and she was adopted by two young people as poor and as kind as her own parents. She lived with them until she grew up. Then she married, and had a little baby of her own. But very soon her husband died, and then her baby died, too, and Margaret was all alone in the world. She was poor, but she was strong, and knew how to work.
Later, there came a great sickness in the city. And so many mothers and fathers died that there were more orphans than the asylums(收容所)could possibly take care of.
Margaret decided to help them. She gave them part of her wages every week and worked for them. Margaret was so good at doing business that, a few years later, she earned more money. And then she built a home for orphan babies, she called it her baby house.
When Margaret died people were surprised to find that, with all her giving, she had still saved a great deal of money, and that she had left every penny of it to the different orphan asylums of the city!
And then the people of New Orleans made a statue of her, in memory of the great love and the great power of plain Margaret Haughery.

25、 Every year, there are many people going home by long-distance buses during the Spring Festival and the Tomb-sweeping Day . There are more walkers on their way home or to work on the roads. So there are more and more traffic accidents on the roads. Thanks to the efforts of the traffic police, it is said that this year the number of traffic accidents across China was 25.2 percent fewer than the year of 2018 during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day.
Tomb-sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival. It is an important occasion for Chinese to honor their ancestors(祖先). Most people go home in memory of(纪念)their ancestors on that day. About 9.78 million Chinese visited cemeteries to honor their ancestors or relatives during the holiday. A few people also spent the three-day holiday on leisure trains. So transportation safety is a big problem. On the other hand, it is said that Chinese have made 112 million trips during the holiday, up 10.9 percent from last year’s holiday. For the traffic accidents, some people lost their lives. This year, traffic accidents caused 10 deaths during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day. The fewer traffic accidents are all from the efforts of the police and our government. With the development of society and the government’s efforts, I believe everything will change better.

26、 Once while being prepared for a television interview, I was chatting with the host about stay-at-home fathers. Why are we seeing more stay-at-home dads? I thought maybe it’s because a man doesn’t make more money than his wife. Many families now take earning (赚钱) power into consideration when deciding which parent will stay home.
At that point, one of the members expressed his opinion, “It should be the better parent who stays at home”. A lot of guys say things like that. I was a stay-at-home father for eight years, so what he said made me excited. It showed that our family’s choice could only have been correct if I was a “better” parent than my wife.
I suppose an argument could have been made that when I began staying home my wife was the “better” parent: She had spent more tune with our son, could read him better and calm him more quickly. And if he had a choice, he’d have picked her over me. But as she was the more employable (有人雇佣的) one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son.
Because of the increased time I spent with him, I soon knew him well, understood what he needed and could look after him more or less as my wife could. Actually, the experience helped me unlock one of the world’s great secrets: Women are good at looking after the children because they do it. It’s not because of a mother’s instinct (本能)—which I think is mostly learned anyway. It’s because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job.
Women are able to give birth and nurse, but over the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself, I was good, too. As good? I don’t know. Who cares? Children are not made of glass. Other people are able to look after them besides Mom.

27、 What does it mean to be green? “Green” is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment — the water, the land, and the air we breathe. Why green? Plants are green, and without them the earth wouldn’t be such a lovely home for us human beings.
Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. That means we are always throwing away old things and buying new ones. Many times, if you no longer need something, someone else just might need it. For example, if your brother is old enough not to play with his plastic bike, why not give it to another family who has a little kid so that they don’t need to buy one? And one less large plastic toy doesn’t need to be produced.
Recycling has never been easier. Many organizations will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require it. Tell your mom or dad you want to become “Chief of Recycling” for your family. Now that you know what things you can recycle, find a place to keep them. Make sure you encourage everyone in your house to think whether things can be reused or recycled before they’re thrown away.
Almost everyone likes traveling. But next time before you travel around the world, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a place where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? If so, get there and get your hands dirty. Then you can watch with pride as your tree takes root, and your garden plants grow into big plants full of ripe, red tomatoes or tiny, juicy blueberries. Who knew being green would taste so good?
