四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、 “I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? Though we cannot see, or hear, or feel our thoughts, they have great power!

Isaac Newton was seated in his garden on a summer evening when he saw an apple fall

from a tree. He began to think, and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how

the Earth, the Sun, the Moon and stars are kept in their places.

James Ferguson once saw the inside of his father’s watch, and he wondered, “Why should I not make a watch?” This set him thinking and it led to a wooden clock which kept good time.

Walt Disney, the famous American film-maker, was often thinking of new ideas. One

day, when he was at a meeting, he suddenly stopped talking, deep in thought. He looked at a place high up in the room for a long time, and then he got an idea for a new cartoon.

Ideas come at any time, and the important thing is to think. When you meet with any

difficulty, don’t lose heart. Try to think of it before asking someone to help you. Think and by

thinking you will learn how to think creatively.

1Newton wanted to find out   .

    A. when the apple hit him   B. why the apple fell

    C. who made the apple fall   D. where the apple fell

    2   made a wooden clock.

    A. Isaac Newton   B. Walt Disney

    C. James Ferguson   D. James’s father

3Walt Disney was   when he got an idea for a new cartoon.

5Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?

    A.   B.   C.   D.

  • 25、These cute seabirds have wings, but they cannot fly. They wear a black or blue-grey overcoat, and they have a white belly, a pair of short legs, and two wings that serve as flippers (脚蹼). There are 18 types of them. We must look at their heads and necks to tell one type from another. Some have a pair of long, yellow eyebrows, some have a rock star hairstyle, some have lemon-yellow and orange markings on their cheeks (脸颊), and some just have no special markings at all. When these seabirds walk on land, they look clumsy (笨拙的). Yet, when they dive into the water, they become excellent swimmers! Most of them live in places covered by snow and ice year-round in the Southern Hemisphere, but some are found in warmer areas near the equator (赤道). What are they? These cute seabirds are penguins!

King penguins and emperor penguins are the two largest types of penguins. King penguins can reach a height of 38 inches, and emperor penguins can be 48 inches tall. The smallest penguin is the little blue penguin from Australia and New Zealand—when it stands straight, it is just about 16 inches tall. Big penguins have some advantages over their smaller relatives—big penguins can stay warm easier so they can live in a colder climate; big penguins can dive deeper and stay underwater longer so they can catch food far below the water surface.

1How can we tell one type of penguin from another?

    A. By looking at their legs and wings. B. By looking at their heads and necks.

    C. By looking at their flippers and cheeks. D. By looking at their eyebrows and hairstyles.

2Which of the following sentences about penguins is TRUE?

    A. There are sixteen types of penguins. B. Yellow penguins are the smallest penguins.

    C. They can only be found in cold places. D. They look clumsy but they are good swimmers.

3What is the second paragraph mainly about?

    A. It tells us the height of two types of penguins.

    B. It tells us the size and advantages of big penguins.

    C. It tells us the living areas of the smallest penguins.

    D. It tells us the living conditions of two types of penguins.

This weekend a marathon ( 马拉松 ) took place in Salzburg. I admired the runners who ran 42.2 kilometers for over four hours. But I've never run for more than half an hour.

At university I play korfball. This is a team sport with eight people on each team. The aim is to shoot ( 投篮 ) the ball into the hoop. All players get a chance to attack ( ) and defend ( ) during the game and it's very fast. When I started korfball, I wasn't very good at it. I could throw and catch but I wasn't very fast on my feet. Shooting was also difficult for me. However, I really enjoyed the sport and made friends in the club, so I went training twice a week. Two years later I am in the first team for my university and have played in many matches. This just shows if you train hard, you can succeed.

Running is difficult because you have to make yourself willing to keep going. I used to get really out of breath while running and I didn't feel good at all! Now I actually enjoy going for a run along the river in Salzburg, feeling my muscles ( 肌肉 ) working and breathing in the fresh air.

Challenging exercise is always worth doing. Hiking is fun because all the hard work—walking uphill comes at the beginning of the day, then at the top of the mountain you can enjoy the view. At the end of the day you feel like you've really achieved something.

I will never be a marathon runner, but I would like to try a 10-km run sometime, or perhaps even a half-marathon. How happy the runners were as they crossed the finishing line! I'd like to have that feeling—the months of training paying off as you achieve your goal.

1What did the writer think of running the marathon at first?

    A. Difficult. B. Strange. C. Enjoyable. D. Exciting.

2When the writer started korfball, he couldn't   .

    A. catch and throw a ball B. catch and shoot a ball

    C. move quickly while playing D. catch the ball from teammates

3Why does the writer think challenging exercise is worth doing?

    A. It helps him make lots of friends. B. It gives him a sense of achievement.

    C. It makes him become a marathon runner. D. It helps him get to the top of the mountain.
