四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Assertiveness is the ability to confidently express your opinions, feelings, attitudes, and rights, in a way that doesn't infringe(侵犯)the rights of others.

Many of us are taught that it is not nice to consider our own needs above those of others. If someone says or does something that we don't like, we should just be quiet and try to stay away from that person in the future.

    Why is Assertiveness important?

If you don't know how to be assertive, you might experience:

Depression—Anger, a sense of being helpless, hopeless, or of having no control over your life.

Resentment—Anger at others for taking advantage of you.

Frustration —Why did I allow that to happen?

Most people find it easier to be assertive in some situations than in others. This makes perfect sense. It's a lot easier to hold your ground with a stranger than with someone you love. But the more important the relationship is to you, the more important it is to be assertive. Assertive behavior leads to increased respect from others!

But before you decide to act assertively, you have to decide if you can live with the results. Although assertive behavior usually will result in a positive response (积极的回应),some people might react differently.

    How to be effectively(有效地) assertive:

Use "I" statements. Keep the focus on the problem you're having. "I'd like to be able to tell my stories without interruption." instead of "You're always interrupting my stories!”

Use facts, not opinions. "Did you know that shirt has a hole?" instead of "You're not going out looking like THAT, are you?"

Express ownership of your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. "I get angry when he breaks his promises. "instead of "He makes me angry. "

Make clear and direct requirements. Don't invite the person to say no. "Will you please?" instead of "Would you mind…?" or "Why don't you…?"

Keep repeating your point. Use a low level and pleasant voice. Don't try to explain yourself.

【1】The writer probably agrees that— .

A.assertive behavior will bring you bad feelings

B.you should be assertive if you want to get good marks

C.assertiveness is the ability to infringe others' rights

D.you should consider others' response before you act assertively

【2】The expression "hold your ground" probably means “ ”.

    A.insist on your point

    B.keep your word

    C.reach an agreement

    D.keep on fighting

【3】Which of the following helps you to be effectively assertive?

A.Explaining yourself in a soft and sweet voice.

    B.Making requirements directly and clearly.

C.Using your opinions instead of facts.

    D.Expressing ownership of others' thoughts.

  • 25、Believe it or not, humans have been in debt(负债) to the Earth Overshoot Day this month. The Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 8th. As of that day, we have used as much from nature in 2016 as our planet can provide in a whole year. In other words, we have run out of this year’s “ecological budget”, and for the rest of the year we’ll be eating into our “savings”.

Global Footprint Network has been watching the Earth Overshoot Day since 1971. This year, the day came five days earlier than it did last year (Aug. 13th), 11 days earlier that the year before (Aug, 19th) and is the earliest date yet.

Global Footprint Network said that humans now use 1.6 Earths worth of crops, forest, livestock, energy and other resources (资源) every year. By the 2030s we will be using more than two Earth’s worth of resources every year. The situation is more and more serious and the world needs to find better balance in how to use the Earth’s resources.

Overshoot Day is a red light warning of trouble ahead. “That is, we’re using up what our planet does for us, so year after year, there is less for us to use,” Stuart Pimm, an American professor of ecology, explained. “Less forest, fewer fish in the ocean, less productive land.” Two of the main causes are over-population and pollution.

Small actions make a big difference and all of us play an important role in creating  a better world where we live. Even a few simple changes around our home can reduce the resource that we waste, from taking a shower instead of a bath, to using our own reusable bags at the store instead of ones that are made of plastics. In this way we can reduce waste and pollution. Let’s start today to live greener in no time.

1What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

    A. The Earth Overshoot Day is coming earlier and earlier.

    B. The Earth Overshoot Day falls on Aug. 19th.

    C. Humans will have to spend more money for the rest of the year.

    D. Humans have used as many resources this year as we did last year.

2According to the Global Footprint Network, which of the following is true?

    A. By the 2030s there will be no resources left on Earth.

    B. Humans need to find better ways to use resources properly.

    C. Humans use more than 1.6 Earths worth of resources every year.

    D. Aug. 13th is the earliest date of the Earth Overshoot Day since 1971.

3Which one can’t help us reduce the resource that we waste?

    A. take a shower. B. take a bath.

    C. use the reusable bags. D. recycle the waste water.

4What can be the best title for the passage?

    A. Living a Saving life B. Aug. 8th—an Important Day

    C. Small Actions make a Big Difference D. Eating up Our Planet

  • 26、   Has anyone ever told you that eating carrots will help you see in the dark? This is just one of many incorrect beliefs you may have heard. Below, there are some scientific explanations for three mistakes that people make about their eyes. Let's take a look.

It may be helpful for people who have trouble sensing lights in the dark. Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won't help you see better. A certain minimum (少量) amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision.

If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?

Myopia (近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there's a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it's down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents.

So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.

Do color blind people see the world in black and white?

Color blindness doesn't usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light. However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.

This is actually connected to how serious the cone cells (视锥细胞) have been damaged. Normally, cone cells contain various kinds of chemicals, which are sensitive to different wavelengths (波长) of light. If a few chemicals are missing, people then can't tell certain colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. If cone cells do not contain those chemicals, then the most serious form of color blindness occurs.

1According to the article, which of the following about eating carrots is true?

A.Eating carrots stops the brain from seeing.

B.Eating carrots doesn't help you see better at all.

C.The more carrots we eat, the better we are going to see in the dark.

D.Eating some carrots is good for our eyes to some degree.

2If both parents have myopia, their child's chance of having myopia is   .A.33%60%   B.40%67%   C.23%40%   D.6%15%

3What is the cause of color blindness, according to the text?

A.Watching movies for too long. B.Cone cells not working properly.

C.Getting too little exercise. D.Changes in the wavelength of light.

4What does the underlined "this" refer to?

A.the most serious form of color blindness

B.whether color blind people see the world in black and white

    C.different levels of color blindness

D.the reason why people are color blind in low light

5What is the purpose of this article?

A.To offer some advice on protecting your eyes.

B.To clear up some incorrect beliefs about our eyes.

C.To provide help for improving your vision.

D.To explain how bad eyesight and color blindness form.

  • 27、阅读下文,从所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案。

Last week Lu visited England. He stayed with my grandmother. He found it was strange.

‘I don’t know why, but I frightened your grandmother a lot. When I arrived, I gave her a purse from Huai’an. She looked in it and asked me to take it back. Then I saw a red spider (蜘蛛) on the table, and I killed it for her. She seemed very unhappy. Do English people like spiders?

‘Later we went shopping. Someone was painting a shop front, so there was a ladder. Grandmother stopped me from walking under it and said I must walk around it. I liked the shops and bought some lovely rose soap for my mother, a smart umbrella for my father and some new shoes for myself. When we got back, I put the shoes on the table and opened the umbrella to check if it was all right. Your grandmother came in and screamed!

‘Then I broke a small mirror in the bathroom. Your grandmother’s face went white. I felt very sorry. When I left, I gave your grandmother some flowers. She counted and there were 13. She didn’t like them.’

I explained to Lu, ‘My grandmother follows the old customs. You must not give someone an empty purse, or they will have no money. You must not kill a “money spider”, or the same will happen. Also it is very unlucky to walk under a ladder or put new shoes on the table. An open umbrella in a house means someone will die. Breaking a mirror brings seven years’ bad luck, and 13 is also a very unlucky number. You were really making my grandmother very afraid.’

【1】Why did Lu frighten the writer’s grandmother?

    A. Because he could not speak English.

    B. Because he did many unlucky things.

    C. Because he understood British customs.

    D. Because he went shopping in England.

2What do many British people think of spiders?

    A. They are afraid of them.

    B. They keep spiders as pets.

    C. They hope to see every kind of spiders in their houses.

    D. They think some kinds of spiders are lucky.

3What did the writer’s grandmother feel when she saw the umbrella?

    A. Excited.   B. Satisfied. C. Afraid. D. Happy.

4Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Thirteen is an unlucky number in England.

    B. It is very unlucky to walk under a ladder or put new shoes on the table in England.

    C. For most British people, breaking a mirror means bad luck.

    D. People never give purses as presents in England.

5How many wrong things did Lu do altogether?

    A. 5.   B. 6.   C. 8. D. 10.
