Multi-meaning words have the same pronunciation with different meanings. For example, let’s look at the word “ball”. You could have a “ball” which means you would have a good time. You could toss a “ball” which means you throw an object. You could be on the “ball” which means you know what is happening. You could go to a “ball” which means a dance.

__________Take the word “can”. You “can” ride a bike which means you are able to ride a bike. You have a “can” of soup which means the soup is in a round-shaped holder. You can do the “can-can” which is a dance from the 1920s. And you might get “canned” if you do a poor job at work, which means you might lose your job.

How about “fly”? You can “fly” an airplane or you can hit a “fly” that is on your food in your house. Or, you can “fly by the seat of your pants” which means you don’t make a plan before taking an action. And, you know that “fly” of a zipper(拉链)is the top part of the zipper.

There are hundreds of words that are multi-meaning words. The word “set” has more meaning than any other word in the English language. When you have time. Why don’t you try to think of all the ways the word “set” is used?

If you look at the title of this book Can a Fly, Fly? …you know that the answer is “Yes” because you have seen an insect named a “fly” go up in the air and move around through the air … which is what “fly” means. Can a Fly? Of course, it can!

  • 25、Last fall a beaver(海狸) moved into the small stream(小溪;溪流) beside our house. He began taking down small trees right away, and in a couple of weeks our stream turned into a pond(水塘). Every day, he added more to his dam(水坝) and to his house. We're sure you've all heard the saying, “as busy as a beaver”. Now, we understand this saying as we saw the work that this beaver did over a very short period(时期) of time.

We thought that would be the last of the beaver's busy activity as winter came. To our amazement, however, he started chewing(咀嚼) on a very large tree. The tree was over 18 metres tall and around 1.5 metres in diameter(直径). We were amazed at the challenge(挑战) this beaver was trying. All winter, he chewed and chewed. He had setbacks(挫折) as we faced major winter storms and ice cold weather. But sure enough, when the weather allowed, he would come back and chew a bit more.

The beaver's first goal(目标) was to survive(生存)—to build home for the winter. Working every day with that goal in mind, he successfully achieved that goal. But the large tree he started chewing on last fall was a future goal—he wanted the large tree to provide new food and branches(树枝) for the coming spring. Even with the setbacks he faced over the winter, he never gave up until he reached it.

Our beaver's experience reminds us that we need to set goals for tomorrow. Sometimes just surviving seems to take up all of our time. But, if you do just a little bit when time allows and stick to your future goal, you will achieve it.

When faced with setbacks, have your goal in heart and don't let the setbacks stop you. Keep chewing like the beaver, and you will achieve(实现;获得) your goal in the end.

1What is the purpose of the beaver's chewing on the large tree?

    A. To provide more food for the winter because of the snow.

    B. To add more branches to his dam and his house.

    C. To prepare new food and branches for the coming spring.

    D. To keep working every day with a goal in mind.

2Here is a paragraph()“When spring arrived, we went down to see the beaver's progress. The tree was about to fall. Our beaver had almost completely chewed around and through the whole tree.” According to the passage, it should be put ________.

    A. between Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2

    B. between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3

    C. between Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4

    D. between Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5

3The best title of this passage might be________.

    A. Keep Chewing   B. Be Like the Beaver

    C. As Busy as a Beaver   D. Set Proper Goals

    4The beaver's experience reminds us that ________.

    A. we need to set goals for tomorrow

    B. we have to get up early in the morning

    C. everybody has a bright tomorrow

    D. everybody will achieve his goal

    5When faced with setbacks, ________.

    A. have your goal in heart

    B. don't let the setbacks stop you

    C. give up

    D. both A and B

  • 26、   Do you think laughter can help you deal with pain? Scientists from Britain did two experiments(实验). The first was done in a lab. People wore special wristbands(腕带). Some of them were asked to watch comedies while others watched serious programs. Then the scientists tightened(勒紧) the wristbands to see how much pain the people could feel.

The other test was done at an art festival. Some people watched a comedy show and others watched a drama(戏剧). At the same time, they had to put their backs against the wall and keep their legs bent(弯曲的) just like sitting on a chair. They did this before and after the show.

Scientists found that just 15 minutes of laughter improves people’s ability to stand pain by 10%. However, the serious programs and the drama didn’t make a difference to pain at all.

The study found that the magic power of laughter comes from endorphins(内啡肽). These are chemicals(化学物质). They are produced by the human body. They make you feel less pain and can make people feel happier. Exercise can produce endorphins. Your muscles(肌肉) move in and out when you are laughing. Scientists believe that this makes your muscles tiring, so we start to produce endorphins.
