24、Chemical reactions (反应)make for some great experiments (实验). You can make use of the CO2 (carbon dioxide) given off by a baking soda (小苏打)and vinegar (醋)reaction to blow up your balloon!
What you’ll need
★ Balloon ★ Soft drink bottle ★ About 40 ml of water
★ Vinegar ★ A teaspoon of baking soda
Instructions
★ Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up.
★ Put the 40 ml of water into the soft drink bottle.
★ Add the baking soda and mix it with water.
★ Put the vinegar in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
What’s happening?
If all goes well, then your balloon should inflate! Adding the vinegar to the baking soda creates a chemical reaction. The baking soda is a base (碱), while the vinegar is an acid (酸). When the two are put together, they create CO2. The gas rises up and escapes through the soft drink bottle. However, it doesn’t escape the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up.

25、Walt Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and even sold his pictures to his neighbors. In 1918, Disney joined the Red Cross and drove an ambulance (救护车) in France during World War I (第一次世界大战). After the war ended, Disney started making short cartoons in Kansas City, but soon he ran out of all his money. He decided to get a job in Hollywood. He went to California with only $20 with him.
It took a while, but Disney began to enjoy success with his cartoons. He created Mickey Mouse, the most famous cartoon character ever. Then in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out and it was a huge success. During the following years, Disney made many more movies that we still watch today.
In the 1940s, Disney had an idea of building a fun park for families and the idea grew bigger and bigger. Years after Disney first had the idea, the first Disneyland opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California. At that time, the ticket cost a dollar. By 1965, fifty million visitors had visited Disneyland.
Disney died in 1966, five years before the opening of his next dream park, Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
