四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

We have four chickens: Pecky, Buckbeak, Mayonnaise and Cornflake. My husband, Andrew, made their coop(笼子). It’s beautifully made.

What’s more interesting is that he made it with our sons and daughter. They spent several weekends in the garage(车库). He gave them tools because he believed it was important that they could actually make something. He slowly helped them and together, they made the coop. They also made the mistakes of learning a board cut too short, nails smashed(打碎) by hammers but in the end, Andrew did some tricks and the coop looked perfect.

The chickens love their perfectly imperfect home and we like to give them free range(放养) of the yard. Yesterday, they ran around the lawn(草坪). We needed to go downtown, knowing that chickens wouldn’t go very far. When we got back, my son, Gordon, ran to check on them. There were Mayonnaise, Cornflake and Buckbeak, looking a mess. Pecky was nowhere to be seen.

With Andrew, we searched the yard and found feathers by the trees. More feathers littered the yard. By this time, Gordon started to worry; Pecky was his favorite chicken and his eyes got watery.

Andrew picked Gordon up and held him. As we stood there, accepting that we were now a three-chicken family, we heard it a soft clucking(咯咯声) sound. Andrew put Gordon down and they looked under a bush. There was Pecky, a half-naked chicken. She looked weird(怪异的), but she was fine. Andrew gently gathered her up and returned her to the coop.

The next day Andrew had the kids back in the garage. They planned to fence(把……围起来) a bigger area for maximum(最大化) chicken freedom and safety. The kids believed that the chickens should be closed in, safe from everything that likes to eat chickens. Andrew disagreed. He believed that we should be more careful, letting the chickens out when we were in the yard. He encourages our kids to take risks. He sees that the risk of living life by having the freedom to walk slowly around and dig for small insects in the garden is better than the safety of a prison(监牢).

Andrew and the kids are planning their next building project. I’m sure it will include the wisdom of a father who knows how to love through the act of giving freedom.

1What does Paragraph 2 tell readers?

A.The family is not good at making things.

B.The kids were easily prevented by their mistakes.

C.The writer’s husband is impatient with his children.

D.The kids managed to build the coop with their father’s help.

2What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 to 5?

A.The family didn’t know how to keep chickens.

B.The family loves the chickens as their family.

C.The family feels troubled by the chickens.

D.The family didn’t look after the chickens well.

3What kind of chicken home will they probably make?

A.A stronger coop made out of the old one.

B.A bigger coop where there is no fence or anything.

C.A bigger place where the chickens will be safer.

D.An enclosed(封闭的) place with where the chickens are well protected.

4Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Children made the mistakes of learning while making the coop.

B.In Paragraph 2, tricks means a way of doing something that works well.

C.The family lost a chicken because they went downtown and let the chickens out.

D.Andrew thinks that the risk of living life is better than the safety of a prison.

5What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the story?

A.To show people how to love animals.

B.To show people some tips for keeping chickens.

C.To tell kids to stay calm when bad things happen.

D.To share the wisdom that comes keeping chickens.

  • 25、Let’s suppose it is a common day of 2060. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.

Trips to the Moon are being made every day. Taking a holiday on the Moon today is as easy as taking a holiday in Europe in 2016. At a number of scenic spots (风景胜地) on the Moon, many hotels have been built. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the Moon, every room has at least one picture window.

What are people eating now? People are still eating food. But many foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill comes mainly from green plants.

Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just using a few computers.

People are now largely vegetarians, and they eat only bread, vegetables, fruit and so on and they don’t eat meat or fish. You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. So people have to be vegetarians. We are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we know how to deal with all kinds of illness. No one has to be ill any more.

Such would be our life in 2060.

    【1】The passage mainly talks about________.

A.trips to the Moon in 2060

    B.developed farming in 2060

C.what our lives would be like in 2060

D.what people would eat in 2060

【2】We are healthier because of the following EXCEPT________.

A.what we eat is green food

    B.we can treat any illness

    C.we are largely vegetarians

D.we run the farm by using computers

  • 26、   A hunter(猎人)once lost his way deep inside the jungle while chasing a deer. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the jungle, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search.

As he ate the first apple, he felt grateful for finding the tree. He thanked the jungle. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less grateful while eating the second apple and even less grateful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became less happy. He couldn't enjoy his tenth apple at all.

Why? He had already taken for granted the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more. Economics(经济学) calls this diminishing marginal utility(边际效用递减). I like to call it diminishing gratitude(感恩递减), or in simpler words, taking things for granted. Or let's just call it the tenth apple effect(效应).

The tenth apple did not lack flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man's hunger. The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the jungle.

1What happened to the hunter in the jungle?

A.He was driven into the jungle by a deer.

B.He tried to eat an elephant.

    C.An apple tree stopped him.

D.He found some apples to eat by chance.

2After eating more apples, the hunter felt ________.

    A.more and more thankful

    B.hungrier than he did before

C.less happy with each apple he ate

    D.more and more disappointed

3Which sentence can best explain the underlined phrase?

    A.Feeling grateful for unexpected gifts.

B.Not being grateful for what you get.

C.Happiness goes away as time goes on.

D.The more things you find, the less useful they are.

4What did the writer say about the last apple?

A.It was not as delicious as the other apples.

B.It was unable to end the man's hunger.

C.The man didn't want to throw it away.

D.The man lacked gratitude for the tenth apple.

Unlike in China, single-gender(单性别的)schools are popular in Australia. Many parents, including mine, send their children to single-gender schools. I study in a girls' school in Melbourne.

One of the good things is that students are treated equally in such schools. There are still many stereotypes(偏见)about girls, like "girls are not as smart as boys" or "girls cannot play sports like boys.”

Since we study in a girls' school, teachers always encourage us to realize our dreams. They want us to be ourselves, regardless of(不管)our gender.

For example, in coeducational(男女合校的)schools, most girls are not allowed to play soccer and other sports are seen as "boys' stuff." But at my school, we play soccer under the instruction of professional coaches. Those who do well have the chance to enter the state team. That means girls can get the same chances as boys. So we are able to jump out of those stereotypes.

Still, there is a big problem for students of single-gender schools-they are less likely to interact(互动)well with the other gender. However, it is necessary to improve their ability. After all, they will one day graduate and go into the bigger world. Then they may face some challenges in relationships. But some schools have realized this. So they organize some activities for boys and girls to meet. Take my school for example. We recently just had a dance party with boys. It was great!

    1Entering a single-gender school are very popular in __________.

    A.China B.Canada C.Australia D.Europe

2What are the stereotypes about girls?

A.Girls are as smart as boys

B.Girls can get the same chances as boys

C.Girls are not good at sports like boys

D.Girls can't go to good colleges

3What's the problem for the girls have in single-gender school?

A.They aren't allowed to play soccer

B.They possibly can't get along well with the boys

C.They can't make their dream come true

    D.They are treated equally

4What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Why go to a girl's school?

    B.Girls want to be themselves

    C.Playing soccer

    D.A dance party with boys
