四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know how to deal with them. Many old computers are put away. Many more are simply thrown away as rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.

In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. These repaired computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体) or people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful things and cut down waste, too.

【1】What do many people do with old computers?

    A.They repair them.

    B.They sell them.

    C.They send them to others.

    D.They stop using them.

2How many computer companies are mentioned in the second paragraph

    A.One.  B.Two.  C.Three.  D.Four.

3According to the laws in some countries, computer companies must _____.

    A.recycle most of their products

    B.collect all their used products

    C.repair and upgrade old computers

    D.make more cheaper computers

4What do the organizations do to solve the problem of old computers?

A.Help the computer companies to collect them.

B.Repair and send them to those who need them.

C.Help people to learn to use them.

    D.Turn rubbish into useful things.

5】What is the main idea of this passage?

    A.Repairing old computers.

    B.Encouraging to make cheap computers.

    C.Recycling old computers.

    D.Helping those who need computers.

  • 25、There are many colours in nature. But do you know that a colour has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment(实验).

First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Wrap(包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.

Why does it happen? A scientist found that different colours have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every colour has its own weight in our mind. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white. The scientists told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour? Of course not. Then why did the scientists say so? That is because every colour represents a kind of light wave(光波)------ a certain wavelength(波长). It reaches our brain(大脑) through organs(感觉器官)

According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colour they like, and refuse the colour they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture(家具) for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only one hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change when we see different colours.

1Which is the lightest colour in a man’s mind?

    A. Red   B. Blue   C. Green   D. White

2Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. Different colours have different weights in a man’s mind.

    B. The colour “blue” is the second heaviest colour in a man’s mind.

    C. People can’t smell the colours.

    D. The colour you don’t like will keep you healthy.

3What will happen when you get into a cool coloured room from a warm coloured room?

    A. You will feel excited.   B. You will be happy and contented.

    C. Your temperature will fall.   D. You will be nervous.

  • 26、   A sense of humor can bring happiness to family life, since laughing together is a way to connect. And a good sense of humor also can make kids cleverer, healthier, and better able to deal with difficulties, because a good sense of humor is not just about telling jokes, but about the response(反应) to things in a creative and funny way. It means you can see things from different sides and in different ways.

Most of us may think humor is like our black hair or big feet. We have it since we are born. But a sense of humor is a completely learned quality(品质)that can be developed in kids, not something they’re born with.

Kids, especially young kids may not understand what humor is, but you can do something funny to make them laugh. For example, you can put on a stupid hat and run after a 3-year-old boy, or pretend(假装) to carelessly fall into a river to make a first-grader laugh. As kids grow up, these things may be boring. But you can share some jokes as their sense of what’s funny grows better.

Kids with a well-developed sense of humor are happier. They have the ability to find what’s amusing in others. They can also deal with differences(their own or others’)well. Kids who can enjoy and share humor are better liked by their friends and more able to go through hard times in childhood—from moving to a new town, to going to a new school. A good sense of humor is a skill that kids can use in their whole life to help them enjoy the funny parts of life, and not take themselves too seriously.

1What’s the first paragraph mainly about?

A.What humor is. B.What is good about humor.

C.How to reply to funny questions. D.How to develop a sense of humor.

2What do most people think of the sense of humor?

A.It can be learned easily. B.It is a necessary life skills.

C.It can grow as we get older. D.It is something we are born with.

3How can parents help develop big kids’ sense of humor?

A.Running after them. B.Sharing some jokes.

C.Putting on a silly hat. D.Pretending to be in an accident.

4What do kids with a sense of humor probably do?

A.They want to be different from their friends. B.They like moving from a place to another.

C.They can get used to a new school soon. D.They take themselves seriously.

  • 27、

The idea that red means stop and green means go has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals. We have been taught from a young age that the colour red means danger and green means it is okay to move forward. But why were those colours chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn’t they have been prettier colours?

Well, it’s important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn. As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go. For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened. Because of that, railway companies finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warn. And it’s been that way ever since.

Red has always been a colour that meant danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it’s the colour with the longest wavelength(波长) so it can be seen somewhere farther than other colours.

But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be painted yellow.

So next time you’re impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don’t get so mad at them; they’ve certainly come a long way.

【1】Which of the following colours meant go at first?

    A.Red.

    B.Yellow.

    C.White.

    D.Green.

    【2】Why does red mean danger?

    A.Because it’s the brightest colour.

B.Because it can be seen far away.

    C.Because railway companies say so.

D.Because it has the shortest wavelength.

【3】What does the text mainly tell use?

    A.How important traffic lights are.

B.Which colour has the longest wavelength.

C.What red, yellow and green can be used for.

D.Why traffic lights are red, yellow and green.
