The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty.1. It seems strange that nearly3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use 3%—the water that comes from rivers and lakes. 2.而且由于有一些水已经被污染, 我们甚至不能全部利用。
Now more water is needed. The problem is:Can we avoid(避免)a serious water shortage later on? Firstly, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. 3. Today. in most large cities. water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again.4. Even if every large city reused its water. still it would not be enough. Thirdly, there is a lot of water in the sea. What we should do is to separate the salt from the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already used in many parts of the world.5.科学家们正在尽力找出一个更加便宜的方式来做这件事。So you see, if we can find a way out. we'll be in no danger of drying up.

24、 Tom Sawyer tried to cut the cupboard with the knife. Then it was the time for him to dress up. However, Tom didn't want to take the trouble to wash his face and hands. And Mary uncovered his secret and he had to use soap to wash his face again. The clean part was just like a mask on his face. Thanks to his own cousin Mary, Tom had become a different person. Finally, he got into his shoes.
Then, they went to Sunday School. Tom hated the school very much. When the children came to the school gate, Tom walked slower and asked another boy, “Bill, have you got a yellow ticket?” Soon after they reached a deal. Tom gave him a fishing hook and he got the yellow ticket. In the same way, he exchanged for some red tickets and some blue tickets.
In this school, the teacher had set a rule to encourage children to recite the Bible (圣经) : if he could recite two verses (节) , the teacher would give him one blue ticket; ten blue tickets were equal to one red ticket; ten red tickets could be exchanged for a yellow ticket; if anyone could get ten yellow ticket, the teacher would give him or her a new Bible. Getting the thick book was the greatest honor for children. So they were busy reciting every day. To Tom, it's impossible, so he thought of a simple way. He exchanged his small thing in other children’s hands. In this way, he got many cards.
At the beginning of the class the 35-year-old teacher made a daily speech. Tom was playing with the boys around him. He pulled a boy's hair and pinned another, but when they turned around, he just read the book carefully, but the children began to talk noisily in the latter one third of the talk. Some children even began to fight.
Suddenly, the room turned silent because some visitors came into the room. Three adults and one young girl entered. To Tom's surprise, the little girl was just the “anger”. Tom thought of his meeting with the girl and the adventure in her garden. Among the visitor, the old man was somebody and all the teachers, men and women, made up to him in many different ways.
Then it was the time to give prize to those children who had got ten yellow tickets. The room was quiet. Nobody had enough tickets. When hope was dead, Tom stood up with nine yellow tickets, nine red ones and ten blue ones, Then, children suddenly realized that they were cheated by Tom. The teacher didn't believe Tom could get so many tickets, but the number of tickets was exact. The prize was given to Tom Sawyer and he was introduced to the old man.

25、 With the new school year quickly coming near, it’s time to get ready for a successful term. It’s equally important to take a look at your study skills, too.
Have you ever noticed that your study habits are different from those of your friends? Or how you seem to learn faster in certain classes? Some people are quick to blame the teacher or subject for their difficulties, but that isn’t always the cause. One thing that many people seem to forget is their learning type.
Now, you may be wondering what a learning type is and how to find yours. There are three different learning types: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. You can be a combination of learning types, but most people have one main type.
1 Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily get information from pictures, graphs, and videos, you are likely a visual learner.
2 Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to remember things by hearing them, whether listening to a lecture or repeating information out loud, then you are likely an auditory learner.
3 Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands or testing out what you are shown, you are likely a kinesthetic learner.
So now that you know your personal learning style, the key is to find out how to use your new-found knowledge to help you in your classes.

26、Born in the 2000s, what do you think of your generation (一代人)? Young, creative, connected, global, smart, maybe good - looking? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoiled and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to do everything for them. So today’s young people seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face - down generation need a heads - up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to serve their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you are one of them born in the 2000s, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face - down generation.

Great BDIA—Beijing Daxing International Airport
Have you ever taken a flight from Beijing Daxing International Airport (BDIA)? It drew attention not just for convenient and environmentally friendly design, but also for its many high-tech facilities(设施) and services.
The new airport, designed by the famous Iraqi-British architect ( 建筑师) Zaha Hadid. The Daxing airport’s technology centers on passengers’ safety and convenience. The airport was designed in a special way that makes it look like a starfish. This kind of design also helps to shorten the walking distance for passengers.
The airport has also been designed to be environmentally friendly. It uses natural light during the day. Thanks in part to 8,000 rooftop windows, the sunlight can shine directly into the building.
There are less than 10,000 lights in the terminal. The brightness of the lights can be changed according to the temperature inside and how many people are in the building. The lights use 70 percent less power than the lights of the Beijing Capital International Airport, which uses more than 20,000 lights. This can save about 8,850 tons of coal and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions ( 排 放 ) by 22,000 tons a year, China Daily reported.
The airport has many new technologies that make it smarter and more efficient. It is the world’s first airport with a double-deck departure and arrival (双进双出) design for its building. “Passengers use much less time than they do in any other large airport t of the same size in the world,” Guo Yanchi, the leading engineer in charge of building, told China Daily.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, 86 percent of check-ins can be done through self-service check-in kiosks and 76 percent of luggage can be checked automatically (自动地) with the help of self-service bag-drop machines. Other technologies, such as a facial recognition system, allow passengers to have a quicker check-in and boarding process.
The airport will also use a robot-operated parking system. Drivers just need to park their cars in given areas. Robots will then carry them to an empty space. When collecting their cars, drivers simply need to scan (扫描) a parking ticket to find out where to collect their cars.
【1】Why do we say BDIA’s design is friendly to our environment?
