24、It was Jennifer Williams’s mother who made her interested in books lifelong. As a librarian (图书管理员), she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to preschool” Williams told vadogwood. com, a local news site. “Until we went to college.”
When Williams, now 54, became a teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to develop reading habits.
“It’s very easy for teachers of young children to find out which kids read and who do not,” she said. “It’s clear at the end of the first day of school.” To Williams, the way to solve the problem was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of a civil (市政的) event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.
“Anybody could do that,” she said. “I wanted to do something that’s going to go with my faith (信仰), my work rules, my everything.”
In order to realize her dream, she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don’t complain in the bedrooms if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.”
So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started leaving boxes of books at her front door. As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools—free of charge—and also gave away books to little free libraries around her city of 41000 just over the North Carolina border (边界). She also hosts a book club for people in the local jail (监狱).
In the four years, she’s been doing all this, the Book Lady, as Williams has come to be known, has given away more than 78, 000 books—only 922, 000 more to reach her goal. And she’s not slowing down. It’s too important for kids with few choices.
“Reading can take you anywhere,” she told a reporter. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”

26、There is a popular Chinese saying that “Fair skin (皮肤) will make up for three flaws (缺陷)”. This mentions the fact that in Chinese culture, it is believed that people who have fair skin are more beautiful. In Western culture, however, the opposite is true — many Westerners think tanned skin is prettier. The example shows that different cultures have different ideas of what they think is beautiful. These cultural meanings of beauty, however, are no longer important. As more and more people travel overseas, ideas about beauty are being shared among cultures. The Internet has also made it easier for people to share different types of beauty since people are always posting pictures on social media. The result is an ever-changing idea of what is considered beautiful.
The cultural practice of ear piercings (刺入), for example, has become a part of modern day culture. In Kenya, it is a tradition among the Marci men and women to pierce and then make their ear lobes (耳垂) longer using ivory and wood or stones. They then wear colorful things on their ear lobes. This is a common practice since longer ear lobes are seen as a sign of beauty. This tradition has now found its way into present-day culture. Nowadays, this might still seem unusual to some, but with more and more well-known actors and film stars showing off their longer ear lobes. it will finally become more fashionable.
It is understood that different cultures around the world have different ways of showing beauty. However, since we now live in a worldwide society, people’s views about beauty are always changing. With the help of the Internet, people are now able to easily borrow ideas from other cultures to help them stand out. So what new fashions can we expect to see in the future?
