六、阅读理解 (共3题,共 15分)
  • 21、I have tried many ways to be ill. I don’t wear a sweater when I should, and two days ago I walked in the rain without my shoes. But so far nothing has happened. Debbie once told me about a boy in her class who liked being away from school. He would rub (擦) the end of the thermometer (温度计) until it went up to 39℃. Then he’d put it in his mouth and his mother would think he was really ill.

This morning I tried doing that but it never went above 35℃ and I rubbed it for ten minutes. So I held the thermometer next to the light on my desk and it went up to 40℃. I thought I’d put it in my mouth and walk downstairs like that. Then my mother would take it out and she would be worried when she saw that I was rather ill.

The only trouble was that I didn’t know the thermometer would be so hot. As soon as I put it into my mouth I burnt my tongue! I spit the thermometer out. It fell on the floor but it didn’t break. I will have to think up a better way to get my mother and father back together.

  • 22、Being home to the largest secondhand bookstore in the world, Hay-on-Wye is more than just a small town in Wales—it’s a book heaven on earth.

The history of Hay-on-Wye as the “town of books” began on the April Fool’s Day of 1977. A man called Richard Booth announced the independence of Hay-on-Wye as a kingdom of books, with him as the king. Since then, he has managed to build a healthy tourism industry based on books. Today thousands of visitors come to Hay-on-Wye every year to look for whatever books they need.

Before Booth’s great idea, Hay-on-Wye was a slowly dying town having less than 2,000 people, with no real economy or notable local businesses. The king of Hay-on-Wye opened his first bookstore in 1961, and later encouraged his friends in the trade to come to Hay. After a few years, he filled almost every building with books. Hay-on-Wye now has over thirty bookshops, many selling second-hand books, which has made the town attractive for book collectors.

Hay-on-Wye has its special honor with over one million books traded here every year. Unlike other book dealers, Richard Booth doesn’t center on any one topic. He buys any type of books believing that every book is valuable and someone in the world wants it. Book lovers from all over the world come to Hay-on-Wye because a large number of books found here are at low prices.

Since 1988, Hay-on-Wye has also been the place for a famous literary (文学) festival, now supported by The Guardian, which draws about 80,000 visitors over ten days at the beginning of June to see and hear big literary names from all over the world.

Once a dying small town, Hay-on-Wye is now an attractive tourist town, with ten percent of its population working in the book business, and local businesses benefiting from the waves of tourists coming here in search of books.

  • 23、A little girl was enjoying the beauty of the garden in her home. Her father had several precious(珍贵的)plants. He grew them with great care.

The girl was amazed by a plant full of fine flowers. She went near the plant and enjoyed the beauty of its flowers. Suddenly she noticed that the plant was growing in a heap of filth(污垢). She could not stand the presence of dirt at the bottom of the plant with such beautiful flowers.

She worked out a plan to clean the plant. She pulled the plant with all her strength and uprooted(连根拔起)it. She then carried it to the room and washed the roots in water till all traces of dirt were washed away. She then placed the plant on a clean stone and went away, thinking that she had done a great thing.

Later, her father came to the garden and saw the uprooted plant. Its flowers and leaves had wilted(枯萎)and the plant had almost died in the sun. His little daughter ran to him to show him her achievement. “I have cleaned it, Daddy,” she said happily. “It was planted in dirty soil. Now it is clean.”

The father showed her how her treatment had almost killed the plant. He told her that he had collected the filthy soil and used it to cover the plant’s roots, as it was the best way to grow that plant. C.He explained to her what she had done was wrong.

D.He told her to grow the same plant again.

【3】Why did the girl feel sad?

A.She should have followed her father’s advice.

B.She shouldn’t have washed the dirty soil away.
