  • 22、Interpreted Theatres

Deaf people should enjoy a play as much as the hearing audience.【1】Theatre producers, on the other hand, are beginning to realise that theatre interpretation makes their product attractive to a wider audience-with considerable financial rewards.

The most important technical aspect of theatre interpretation for the deaf is the location of the interpreter. Placement strategies can be categorized into three styles: “placed” “zoned” and finally, “shadowed”.

The “placed” style of interpretation, where interpreters are located outside the acting space and do not move, is by far the most common. The interpreters are side-by-side and face the audience. The location of the interpreter is generally in one of three places: stage right or stage left, or on the floor of the house.

The “zoned” style of interpreter placement is a happy medium between the “placed” and “shadowed” styles.【2】Usually, they change position on stage from scene to scene—or from act to act—in order to be within the same “zone” as the majority of the action. Zone placement makes it easier for the deaf audience to see the interpreters and actors at the same time.

【3】It involves placing the interpreters directly within the action—nearly making them “sign language actors”. The interpreters are “blocked” into each scene, and shadow the actors. The advantage of this is clear: the interpreter is so close to the actor that the deaf audience need not make a decision about whom to watch—he or she can watch both at the same time. In the best of cases, the deaf audience mentally mix the interpreter with the actor, and forget that the actor does not sign.

Theatre interpreters for the deaf are dedicated professionals who take great pride in their work. “Theatre”, says Ian, who works for See Theatre, a Chicago-based association for interpreters “is the art of communicating beautiful ideas in interesting ways”. 【4】Thankfully, instead of seeing us as ‘additions’, producers nowadays think of interpreters for the deaf as a new avenue to creativity.

A.Interpreted theatre has long been neglected without taking the issue of their access into consideration.

B.The “shadowed” style of interpreting is the most inclusive style of interpreting for the theatre.

C.This is the thinking behind the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires that theatres become accessible to deaf people.

D.Interpreters move about in order not to block the audience's view.

E.Interpreted theatre, therefore, is an art in itself.

F.Here, interpreters are placed side-by-side within the acting space.

  • 23、One of the great things about pictures is that they make no demands on you. You can look as long as you like and walk away at any time. There's a freedom in the arrangement that's different from going to the movies, concerts or the theater. Occasionally, people always say they feel intimidated by art. On the one hand, I get it. Some in the art world, wanting to establish their authority, fall back on abstractions to create a zone of exclusion. It can be insufferable. But on the other hand, what field doesn't see a version of this phenomenon? Have you tried understanding cellular biology? Contract law? In my experience, there is less of this complex talk around art than around most other fields.

Art is a wide field. It's deep. It's diverse. You can come at the subject from countless angles. People seem to have been making art since the beginning, so the subject is an inseparable part of the whole history of humanity. So yes, things can get complicated. But, in the end, we're talking about pictures and sculptures. How hard is it to look at a painting? How difficult is it to walk around a sculpture? Children get it immediately. They know there's no right or wrong when it comes to looking at art. There are just things to notice, to test against our imperfect sense of the truth, and to fold into our various conceptions of beauty. Things we notice may cause feelings. They may lead to ideas. They might equally provide a release from ideas-a release into wonder, and into new kinds of awareness connected to your body, your senses, and your general state of existential confusion. What I notice will be different from what you notice. That's how it goes with art.

More than the political or economic conditions of any given era, it is art that later generations most want to remember. We remember Picasso and Matisse with more love than General Francisco Franco or Marshall Petain. And we remember the Beatles and Francis Bacon over the chief ministers of Britain in the 1960s. That's because the arts-and I define the term as broadly as possible-reveal the best of us. It's because they combine the most intelligent and the most feeling of us. They testify, most fundamentally, to the fact that we're alive, that people lived before us, that as a species we're capable of making the most extraordinary things, and that human consciousness and the world beyond it are nothing short of astonishing.

Again and again, art expresses that astonishment-that mixture of wonder and disappointment, knowing and unknowing, pleasure and pain, joy and fear.

【1】What does the underlined word “intimidated” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Misled.

    B.Inspired.

    C.Frightened.

    D.Attracted.

【2】What is the main idea of the first two paragraphs?

    A.Art is complicated but easy.

B.Art is as complex as other fields.

C.Art is insufferable due to its abstraction.

D.Art is an inseparable part of human history.

【3】Why does the author mention several famous people in Paragraph 3?

A.To emphasize artists are more adorable.

B.To illustrate the superior position of art.

C.To show art can spread in a broader area.

D.To compare political and artistic figures.

【4】According to the passage, the author may agree that ________.

A.abstract concepts can block humans' insights

B.art is a combination of unsettled contradictions

C.humans should try to perfect their thoughts of beauty

D.the appeal of art lies in its reflection of the best of man

  • 24、   Grab an ice cube from the freezer and place it on a table. Watch closely enough and you will see, well, not much at all. The ice cube is absorbing heat, but it is still an ice cube. Before it melts, it will draw heat from the environment to change from solid to liquid. Only then will it begin to slip and slide in a puddle of its own making.

And so to A World Without Ice by Henry Pollack, retired professor of geophysics at the University of Michigan and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that shared the 2007 Nobel peace prize with AI Gore.

The book gets off to a slow start. You may have to work a little before being rewarded. But given time. Pollack’s account warms up and really takes off. The story he has to tell is fascinating, frightening and important.

Despite the title, this is not a book about the world without ice. Much is given over to the impact of ice in Earth’s long history, as an important force that shaped our planet’s landscape, controlled migrations and influenced cultures. Pollack takes us through Antarctic and Arctic explorations, the natural cycles that bring us ice ages and milder periods without extremes of heat or cold and the rise of climate science which, among other achievements, can recreate a history of the temperature on Earth from kilometers of ice core drilled from the polar caps.

Pollack’s intellectual power and clarity of phrase are invaluable in describing the scientific evidence for global warming, the ways in which it will affect the world, and the all-too-probable consequences. Pollack is not one to brush awkward issues under the carpel. There is serious discussion about uncertainties in climate science, and in particular the computer models used to forecast future warming. For its forensic analysis (取证分析) and strong destruction of climate sceptic (怀疑论者) arguments alone, A World Without Ice is worth keeping on a nearby shelf.

Some readers may hind Pollack’s US-centric approach occasionally grating (刺耳的). He tells of intense irrigation in southwestern Kansas, IPCC reports as big as several New York City phone directories and school-day stories from Omaha. But this is forgivable. The US is uniquely placed to act on climate change but faces a significant barrier in the shape of the outdated. influential, oil-funded anti-climate change lobby (游说议员的团体).

Thoughtful throughout, Pollack occasionally delivers paragraphs that stay with you long after closing the book. On the subject of the book itself, he writes: “Nature’s best thermometer (温度计), perhaps its most sensitive and unambiguous indicator of climate change, is ice, When ice gets sufficiently warm, it melts. Ice asks no questions, presents no arguments, reads no newspapers, listens to no debates. It is not burdened by ideology and carries no political baggage as it crosses the threshold (门槛) from solid to liquid. It just melts.”

A World Without Ice is a call to arms. Debates about which mitigation (减缓) strategies might give us the best chances of reducing our emissions miss the point, Pollack says. If we want to avoid the worst that climate change may bring, we need “every horse in the stable pulling together, and as hard and as fast as possible”.

Pollack’s argument is attractive, persuasive and deeply upsetting, no matter the climate change tiredness that unavoidably sets in as a consequence of endless media coverage of global warming. The author’s final warning comes from Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher: “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”

Pollack leaves us in no doubt as to where that is.

1A World Without Ice mainly focuses on_______.

A.the adventures to the freezing Poles

B.the impact of ice on human and nature

C.the role of climate science in drilling ice

D.the process of ice cube turning into water

2We can learn that A World Without Ice________.

A.brings us to the core of the issue at the very beginning

B.convinces sceptics of the truth about climate change

C.gives an in-depth analysis of global warming

D.gets funded by anti-climate change lobby

3Why does Henry Pollack think ice is nature’s best thermometer?

    A.Ice is a reminder of peaceful co-existence.

B.Ice is a common topic of the media coverage.

C.Ice is a controversial issue in political debates.

D.Ice is a clear indicator sensitive to climate change.

4The underlined sentence in Paragraph 8 probably means the book_____.

A.urges us to make joint efforts to fight climate change

B.advocates addressing climate change by armed forces

C.recommends debating on strategies to reduce emission

D.calls for separate and tough actions in a timely manner

5What does the underlined word that in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Warning from Lao Tzu. B.Destination of a journey.

C.Effect of global warming. D.Argument on climate change.

6What is the author’s attitude to A World Without Ice?

    A.Ambiguous. B.Cautious. C.Positive. D.Skeptical.
