21、 Well, to pick up where we left off last time, I believe all of you know now how plastics developed. But a piece of sad news, every year about 8 million metric tons of plastic is thrown into our oceans. That's as much as a truckload of plastic waste every minute. According to Plastic Oceans, packaging accounts for just over 40% of total plastic usage. Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than 1 million bags are used every minute. 14% of all litter comes from beverage containers (plastic bottles). Sadly, a plastic bag has an average “working life” of 15 minutes. Over the last 10 years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century. Plastic takes 500 years to break down. Once it enters our environment, it stays there.
This is why it is important to stop using plastic items that we use for about 15 minutes before we dispose of it. Hopefully, we can help put an end to plastic pollution by choosing not to use single use plastic items, such as plastic bags and straws. And this July, people around the world will take a pledge(请愿)to live a plastic free life. You can either give up the top four ——straws, bottles, bags and coffee cups or you can refuse as much single use plastic as you can every day. Another way to help reduce the problem is to take part in beach clean-ups. On the first Saturday of every month Clean C, an initiative that gets volunteers to clean up our beaches, hosts beach clean-ups on beaches across Cape Town. 22、Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes, and Karen EIson—these are just a few people who have spoken about their experiences of being victims of bullying (欺凌) at school, and the pain that it has caused them in childhood and later life. Recent research suggests that the effects of childhood bullying can continue for decades, with long-lasting changes that can put us at a greater risk of mental and physical illness.
Undoubtedly, bullying is a serious risk to children’s mental health in the short term, with the most notable consequences: anxiety, depression and suspicious thinking. While some of these symptoms may naturally disappear after the bullying stops, many victims continue to suffer from a higher risk of mental illness.
According to a recent paper in the Harvard Review of Psychiatry, a woman who has been bullied as a child is 27 times more likely to have a panic disorder. Among men, childhood bullying resulted in a 18-fold increase in suicide (自杀). Bullying will also have extended consequences for people’s social lives: many victims find it harder to make friends or live with a long-term partner in later life. “Kids who’ve been bullied, might interpret social relationships in a more threatening way,” says Arseneault. Finally, there are the academic and economic costs. Bullying harms people’s grades, which in turn reduces their job prospects.
Arseneault’s research suggests that the resulting stress can influence the body for decades. Analyzing data from a 50-year-long study, she found that frequent bullying between the ages of 7 and 11 was linked to markedly higher levels of inflammation (炎症) at age 45. Importantly, the link remained even after she had controlled many other factors, including their diet, physical activity, and whether they smoked. That’s important, since such inflammation can break down the immune (免疫) system and contributes to the wear and tear on our organs that leads to conditions like cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
Growing up is rarely going to be easy: children and adolescents are learning to adjust to social relationships, which is always going to come with hurt and upset. But as adults, we should take our responsibility to teach children that certain behaviors are never acceptable: there is no one to blame but the bullies themselves. 23、The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem (生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. 24、 Turtles have an unfortunate habit of eating plastic objects floating in the sea. These then cannot be broken down and digested, and may ultimately kill them.
It is widely assumed that this special liking for plastics is a matter of mistaken identity. Floating plastic bags, for instance, look similar to jellyfish, which many types of turtles love to eat. Yet lota of plastic objects that end up inside turtles are not similar to jellyfish. Joseph Pfaller of the University of Florida therefore suspects that the smell of micro-organisms (微生物) which grow on floating plastic objects fools turtles to feed.
Researchers at the University of California noticed that certain chemicals, which are released into the air by micro-organism — colonised plastics, are those which many seabirds sniff to track down food. These chemicals mark good places to hunt because they indicate an abundance of the seaweed and bacteria. Since turtles are known to break the surface and sniff the air when swimming towards their feeding areas, Dr. Pfaller indicated that they are following these same chemicals, and are fooled into thinking that floating plastic objects are edible.
To test that idea, he and his colleagues set up an experiment. They arranged for 15 of the animals, each around five months old, to be exposed, in random order, to four smells delivered through a pipe to; the air above an experimental area. The smells were: the vapour from deionised (去离子) water; the smell of turtle-feeding meal; the smell of a clean plastic bottle; and the smell of a similarly plastic bottle that had been kept in the ocean for five weeks to allow seaweed and bacteria to grow on it. Two of the smells-the smell of meal and that of five-week-old bottles-proved far more attractive to the animals than the others.
On the face of it, then, the turtles were responding to the smell of old bottles as if it were the smell of food. In an unpolluted ocean, pretty well anything which had this smell would be edible-or, at least, harmless. Unfortunately, five-week-old plastic bottles and their like are not.
