21、Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.
Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.
Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “horrid” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories?
Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history —not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.

23、 With bold colors, sharp lines and surreal (超现实主义的) scenes, street art from Brazil brings a different cultural feast to the audience in Shanghai this winter.
Two famous Brazilian street artists, twin brothers Gustavo Pandolfo and Otavio Pandolfo, opened their exhibition at the Shanghai Fosun Foundation on the last day of 2020. Titled “You Are My Guest,” the show will last till Feb. 26.
“It was difficult to put this show together when the whole world had to stop because of the pandemic,” Otavio Pandolfo told Xinhua during an online interview. Due to COVID-19, the two artists could not personally present their work in Shanghai, nor could they participate in the exhibition’s offline planning and preparations. However, they created a network with staff members from the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai via e-mails and video links.
After months of online communication and arrangements, they managed to send over 200 art pieces to Shanghai. “We try to find the best way to share our works with all the guests that visit the show,” he said.
Popular around the world, they have held and participated in exhibitions in countries including the United States, Portugal and Finland. “ ‘You Are My Guest’ is an invitation for everyone to jump inside our imagination, and we like to share this with everybody,” he said, adding that the exhibits were presented in a multi-media way, including large-scale paintings and sound pieces.
Born and living in Sao Paulo, they infuse(注入) their works with Brazilian cultural elements, such as local folk stories, hip hop music and breakdancing, and hope the exhibition would give Chinese audiences a glimpse of Brazilian culture. “It was a difficult year for everyone in many different ways,” said Gustavo Pandolfo. “We hope that with this exhibition we can bring some hope, energy and light, and people can think of something colorful, fun, happy and with love.”

New Players Help Build Emotional Intelligence in Children
Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Educational products are important to the toy industry. In recent years, parents have shown an interest in STEM-related toys—ones that help teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. 【1】 These toys reportedly not only help raise intelligence in children, but also their emotional quotient, or EQ.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York's Jacob Javitz Convention Center. PlelQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses augmented reality (增强现实) technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Duran directs the company that makes PlelQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera. Intelligence includes intrapersonal (内心的) skills—processing information within one's mind—and interpersonal skills, or dealing with other people. 【2】.
On the other side of the convention center, Karen Hu demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touchscreen face to get them started. 【3】 Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism spectrum disorder (自闭症障碍). “He [ the child] can communicate with Woobo and he can follow some of the instruction Woobo is giving because he think(s) of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him to certain things.”
A more low-tech companion is a toy animal called Manimo. The manufacturer says this toy can help reduce hyperactivity in children and improve their ability to pay attention to a subject. Whether it's a snake, dolphin or other animal, Manimos can be placed across a child's arm, chest or neck. Karine
Ganger, president of Manimo, explained that adding deep pressure to one's body can help calm a child before bedtime.
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. 【4】.
A.Duran said PlelQ builds on both by having children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.
B.Rated best by of the year, it helps to enhance a child's personality development.
C.But toy-makers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
D.But now, toy-makers are working to create products improving a child s emotional intelligence as well.
E.The purpose of the toys is to develop children's IQ.
F.Toys that work as companions also aid in social development.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Years ago, I became the secretary of Jack, a strict and bad-tempered man.
One day, Jack threw the papers on my desk-his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at me. “What’s wrong?” I asked. He jabbed (戳) a finger at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” he said, turning on his heels and leaving me in great anger. How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.
It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm,” she whispered.
As the weeks went by, I grew to look down upon Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies.
One day another of his rude behaviors left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.
Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it. I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”
Jack smiled nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed. “I want to make you a promise. Whatever you do, I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.
Jack avoided me the rest of the week.
