  • 21、Shipwrecked Prayers

A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men aboard were able to swim to a small, desert-like island. Not knowing what else to do, the two survivors agreed that they had no alternative but to pray to God.

However, to find out whose prayers were more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.

The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the island, and he was able to eat its fruit. But the other man’s parcel of land remained barren.

After a week, the first man became lonely and decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the island. But on the other side of the island, there was nothing.

Soon thereafter the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The next day, like magic, all of these things were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.

Finally, the first man prayed for a ship so that he and his wife could leave the island, and in the morning he found a ship docked at his side of the island.

The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island, considering the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings since none of his prayers had been answered.

As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven booming, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”

“My blessings are mine alone since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he doesn’t deserve anything.”

“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”

“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “what did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”

“He prayed that all your prayers would be answered.”

For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of another praying for us. So what you do for others is more important than what you do for yourself.

    1The first man’s wife is _____.

    A. a swimmer who got to the island by accident

    B. an angel sent by God to keep him company

    C. a survivor from another wrecked ship

    D. a native person on the desert-like island

2The underlined word “barren” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____.

    A. isolated B. unproductive C. fertile D. dry

3Which of the following is true about the second man?

    A. He didn’t deserve any blessing from God.

    B. None of his prayers was answered by God.

    C. He is not brave enough to tell God his needs.

    D. His prayer helped his companion get out of trouble.

4What’s the moral of the story?

    A. Never judge a person by appearance.

    B. Don’t lose heart in trouble.

    C. Helping others is helping ourselves.

    D. Greed is the root of all evil.

  • 22、You may be in memory of the place where you learned to ride your first bike or the door frame where your parents tracked your heights. But would that nostalgia (怀旧) be enough for you to drop half a million to buy back the house?

If you’re author J.K. Rowling and your childhood home inspired certain parts of what would become one of the most well-known fiction series to ever exist, it’s worth considering. As it turns out, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling owns her childhood home, Church Cottage at Tutshill in Chepstow, according to the Daily Mail.Rowling quietly obtained the gothic-style (哥特式) cottage when it went on the market back in 2011 for $400,000.

Now, the secret is out, as this week, Rowling and her husband applied for renovation (翻新) projects of the house, after years of no activity. The district council has granted the couple planning permission to install two windows and rebuild the garage.

Rowling lived here from ages 9 to 18, marking her territory by scrawling “Joanne Rowling slept here, about 1982”on the wall when she was 17, reports The Daily Mail.

The home includes a cupboard under the stairs, which is believed to have been the inspiration for Harry's room at the Dursley family’s house. Rowling also got the name for the Quidditch team Tutshill Tornados from the name of the house’s street.

Some wise fans were able to connect the dots leading to the home, often trying to visit it. “There are always members of the public asking to come in to see the house,” Julian Mercer, the home’s former owner, told BBC. “But we haven't let them in.”

D.Some elements of the cottage are named after the great series of Rowling.

  • 23、   The Notting Hill Carnival is London’s biggest street festival and one of the most famous carnivals in the world. The carnival is an important cultural event for London’s Afro Caribbean community and celebration of multi-cultural British life.

Notting Hill Carnival takes place in London every August bank holiday. Bank holiday refers to a public holiday, for example Christmas Day. It is the most colourful and largest street event in the UK. The festival celebrates the traditions of the Afro-Caribbean community, who immigrated to England from the West Indies in the 1950s. They brought with them the Caribbean idea of the carnival, with colourful costumes, parades, steel bands and street dancing. The tradition to hold the carnival began in 1964 and it has taken place every year since then.

Preparations for the carnival start many months in advance. Costumes need to be made, and floats built, ready for the carnival street parades. Steel bands practise traditional Caribbean music on instruments built from used oil buckets. Just before the festival, the streets are decorated with yellow, green and red banners, and recording devices are set in place to carry the rhythmic sounds over the loud noise of the London traffic. The carnival is celebrated over three days, and is full of music and colour. Parades of steel and brass bands, floats, and dancers in colourful costumes make their way through the narrow London streets, watched by tens of thousands of people. The streets are lined with stands selling tropical fruits, such as fresh mangoes, watermelons and pineapples. Everyone in London dances—young and old, black and white—and even the policemen on duty take part in the fun. For these three days in August, a little Caribbean magic touches the streets of London.

【1】What is the writer's main aim in writing the text?

C.It is gaining in popularity among the white in recent years.

D.The streets in London are filled with pop music.

  • 24、   A sheet of transparent new material at a University of Maryland lab looks like it might be plastic. But it's actually wood — and it could eventually be used to make energy-efficient windows or even see-through buildings.

“Compared to glass, wood has lower thermal conductivity (热导率), and it's lighter, stronger, more environmentally friendly,” says Liangbing Hu, a materials science professor at the University of Maryland and one of the authors of a new study of the material.

The idea is to employ the material in buildings. With a window made from transparent wood instead of glass, for example, a building would take less energy to heat and cool. Because of the structure of the wood, the windows could also reduce glare from the sun while allowing in natural light.

Researchers have experimented with transparent wood in the past, but the new method is more sustainable. Other methods usually soak the wood in a chemical compound called sodium chlorite (亚路酸钠) to remove lignin, part of the wood that gives it structure. But this can weaken the wood, and it produces waste that is hard to recycle. Hu and his team slightly changed the process so it doesn't fully remove the lignin. By brushing hydrogen peroxide over the wood and leaving it under a UV light, they removed only the parts of the lignin that give it color. The result is transparent wood that can be coated in epoxy (环氧树脂).

It's just one of a number of ways scientists and engineers are rethinking how we can use this renewable resource in construction. Skyscrapers made entirely out of wood are gaining popularity in cities around the world. And scientists recently discovered a technique to grow wood in a lab, opening up the possibility of using wood without having to chop down a forest.

The transparent wood is 50% stronger than previous transparent wood and could even be used to build load-bearing walls in a building. It could also potentially be used in other ways, such as layers used in solar cells (太阳能电池). A new spinoff company called Invent Wood is working to commercialize the technology.

【1】Which of the following shows the function of the new material?

    A.It looks like plastics.

B.The windows made of it are energy-efficient.

C.It is invented by a materials science professor.

D.Transparent wood will replace glass in the future.

【2】What can we learn from the 4th paragraph?

A.Lignin is the waste that is likely to weaken the wood.

B.Different methods of how to brush hydrogen peroxide over the wood.

C.Hu and his team soak the wood in sodium chlorite to remove lignin.

D.The previous method causes pollution while the new one is more environmentally friendly.

【3】What effect does growing wood in a lab have on the environment?

A.Skyscrapers made out of wood are popular with cities around the world.

B.It makes it possible to stop the destruction of forests for construction.

C.Scientists and engineers are driven to search for renewable resource.

D.Researchers have experimented with transparent wood.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Transparent wood is used as layers in solar cells.

B.Walls in a building are made from transparent wood.

C.Invent Wood is promoting the new transparent wood for business.

D.The previous transparent wood has been damaged all over the world.
