27、It would be easy to believe that Mother’s Day was created by a greeting card company. After all, the day is celebrated with special sales and brunches, lots of presents and massive advertising campaigns. But the day was actually conceived more than a century ago by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.
Jarvis’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs,” teaching women how to care for their children. During the Civil War, she organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” where mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers met to try to promote harmony. The younger Jarvis Was inspired by all the things her mother had accomplished with her social work.
When Jarvis was young, she overheard her mother praying, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will find a memorial mother’s day honoring her for the matchless service she offers to humanity in every field of life.” When her mom died in 1905, Jarvis looked through all the sympathy cards she received. She underlined all the kind words that praised her mother, reading them over and over. The outpouring of kindness for her mother inspired her to create a day to honor all mothers.
The white carnation was her mother’s favorite flower, so it became the symbol for the day. She said it symbolized the truth, purity and charity of a mother’s love. Her idea of celebrating Mother’s Day was wearing a carnation while visiting your mother or maybe going to church together. Children were also encouraged to write letters to their mothers, sharing the depths of their appreciation.
The first official Mother’s Day events were held on May 10. 1908, at the church where her mother taught Sunday School in Grafton, West Virginia, and at the Wanamaker’s department store auditorium(礼堂)in Philadelphia. Jarvis didn’t attend the event in Grafton, but she sent 500 white carnations.

28、Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.
Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.
Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities (设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military Medal by the French government.
In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity (辐射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

29、 A year ago, Jiao Wenchao, 31 and a college teacher suddenly realized that he was having hearing problems. A hospital examination suggested that both his ears were losing the ability to hear high frequency sounds. The doctor told him that the problem was caused by over exposure(暴露)to high frequency and loud noise, including from his earphones.
A recent report by the World Health Organization has warned that some 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smart phones.
Data from studies in middle-and high-income countries analyzed by WHO indicate that among teenagers and young adults aged between 12 and 35, nearly 50 percent were exposed to unsafe levels of sound from personal audio devices and around 40 percent were exposed to potentially(潜在地) damaging levels of sound at entertainment sites.
According to the study, safe listening depends on the intensity(密度) or loudness of sound, as well as the duration(持续)and frequency of listening. When the exposure is particularly loud, regular or prolonged, it could lead to permanent damage of the ear's sensory cells, it says.
The study results have caught wide attention on the Internet in China. Many internet users admit that compared with more noticeable health problems like eyesight loss, hearing loss has been largely neglected(忽略) as it is usually in the high frequency section, which means that those who suffer it can still carry out daily communication unaffected.
Pan Tao, an otologist from Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing says that timely treatment is critical. "This is because sometimes the hearing loss is temporary and can be cured with therapy, including medicine. However, it can become irreversible(不可逆转的) if the problem is not properly treated within the first two or three months.
"But many people miss the best time to get treated because they do not even realize the existence of the problem."
It says teenagers and young people can better protect their hearing by keeping the volume down on personal audio devices, wearing earplugs when visiting noisy sites, and using carefully fitted, and, if possible, noise-canceling earphones or headphones.

A.Freguent exposure to loud noise.
B.Listening to music on the phones.

A.Half of the population in rich countries will go deaf.
B.People should not use personal audio devices.
C.Loud noise will cause physical damage to ears.
D.Hearing loss is a potentially serious problem.
【3】Why don’t people pay attention to hearing loss?
A.It won’t affect communication. B.It can be cured easily.
C.It often escapes notice. D.It is only temporary.
【4】What is suggested to avoid hearing loss?
A.Have your hearing examined regularly.
B.Keep yourself to a safe sound volume.
C.Stay away from personal audio devices.
D.Don’t go to noisy places.
