二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When I was a boy, my parents and I traveled from New York City to the Pennsylvania countryside for a weeklong taste of rural life. We stayed in a guesthouse on a farm, joining the daily routines and eating meals with the farmer and his family. We got up early to see the cows as they were milked. I even tried my hand at milking one, and then joined the farmer as he released the cows into the field afterward.

Decades later I still have vivid memories of that trip which made me realize the value of a vacation, of seeing new things, meeting new people and sharing memorable experiences with family members. To this day, I still consider that family trip when I plan to take time off with my wife and kids. Vacations are a time for resting and connecting. As a bank manager, I spend much of my workday encouraging my customers to save their money. One of the reasons I give is that we should all have enough for a family vacation every year. In our busy lives, family is what we should be saving our money and time for.

For my family, our vacation starts when we begin planning the trip. We talk about destinations and our budget (预算) ahead of time. Among the things we discuss: Can we save money by renting a house instead of spending six nights in a hotel? Would it be better to buy groceries and cook for ourselves rather than eat out every night? Involving (使参与) the kids in planning the vacation makes sure that they have a great vacation too. I prefer to visit historical sites and museums while they love to fish and swim. So I build in some relaxation time for us all so that the vacation can work for everyone.

Each year, setting aside vacation time to spend together is especially important to us. A relaxing environment opens the doors to all kinds of conversationsdeep, silly or meaningful. There’s no pleasure from the usual everyday tasks. What matters is that everyone is having a great time.

1Why did the author and his parents go to the countryside when he was young?

A.To milk the cow. B.To meet the farmer and his family.

2Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The author encouraged his customers to save their money for family vacation.

B.The author met new people and new things during the trip.

C.The trip helped the author understand the meaning of vacations better.

D.The author involved his kids in planning the vacation to cut their budget.

3What is this passage mainly about?

A.The author had a good time in the countryside.

B.The author advised others to spend vacations with their families.

C.The author tried to enjoy the holidays with his family.

D.The author realized the value of family vacations and put it into practice.

  • 28、   It was my first year of teaching. I was young and inexperienced, and had class after class of twenty kids just waiting for me to make a mistake.

After a particularly long night of grading papers and thinking about how many weeks I'd left until I could breathe, I had one of those mornings when I began to question my job choice. I'd become a teacher to help kids. Instead, I felt like I couldn't even help myself anymore. It was just Mother's Day, and as I sat at my desk surrounded by lesson plans, I wondered how I'd ever have enough energy to have children of my own.

That was when I heard a knock at my door. One of my students came in — the cool basketball-playing country boy who had accidentally broken my favorite snow globe so that I couldn't display nice things in my classroom. He handed me a large flower that probably came from his family's farm. He'd stuck a bird feather in it.

'I got you a Mother's Day gift,' he said in a low voice. Most middle school and high school teachers don't receive presents. Christmas and Teacher Appreciation Day had already come and gone without any gifts. I was so shocked that I just stared.

Made nervous by my silence, he said, 'You know…since you're like a mother to us, I thought you should get a present, too.'

I smiled and told him he was the sweetest person in the entire world, and that I just loved it. Based on his smile, I knew I'd done enough work of making him feel quite proud of himself. What made that twelve-year-old bring me a homemade present? I'll never know. Once he left the room, I locked the door. And I cried. That moment helped me get through the rest of the school years.

1What did the author think of her job as a teacher at the beginning?

    A.Interesting. B.Tiring.

    C.Rewarding. D.Demanding.

2How did the boy feel when he gave his teacher the present?

    A.Excited. B.Shocked.

    C.Unwilling. D.Shy.

3How did the author react when she was given the flower?

    A.She was moved to tears.

    B.She didn't accept the present.

C.She was too surprised to say anything.

D.She stared at the boy in puzzlement.

4Which of the following encourages the author to continue teaching?

    A.The sincere love from students.

    B.Her positive attitude to life.

    C.Her strong interest in teaching.

    D.The achievements in her work.

  • 29、I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class.Having taught in the US for 17 years,I have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.

I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“stand up!”The entire class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment was over,I quickly regained my calmness and admiration.I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.

My students kept diaries. However,as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said,“Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today.Perhaps her next lecture will be better.”Greatly surprised,I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar theme.“Didn’t I teach them anything?I described the entire Western philosophy (哲学) and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,”I complained.“How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”

It was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students.I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
