27、 Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams (阻塞) and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a scheme (计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib scheme (‘Velib’ comes from vélo liberté, or ‘bicycle freedom’) people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only €1 a day or €29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this. But not everybody thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, ‘These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle — they’ll still use their cars.’
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
【1】What can we learn about the Velib scheme?
A. Its bikes have no baskets.
B. Its bikes are light and colorful.
C. It aims to make traveling easier.
D. It owns more stations than the subway.
【2】If you use a Velib for 1 hour, you should pay _____.
A. €1 B. €30
C. €29 D. no money
【3】Why do some people disagree with the Velib scheme?
A. The cost is rather high.
B. It’s hard to find a Velib station.
C. It’s not suitable for a long journey.
D. The distance between two Velib stations is long.
【4】What’s the city spokesman’s attitude towards the bicycle scheme?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.
28、 Humans have always been curious about what Earth was like thousands of years ago. To learn more about the plants and animals that lived during that time, scientists examine their fossils or other remains. In recent years, genetics, and in particular the the study of DNA, has become an important tool for these scientists. Some people even dream of bringing ancient creatures such as dinosaurs back to life. Although no animals have been brought back yet, scientists have managed to grow a number of ancient plants from seeds. By far theoldest of these plants is a 32,000-year-old plant that has been grown again by Russian scientists.
The plant is a flower called Silenestenophylla, which used to grow in Siberia in eastern Russia. The scientists discovered seeds and fruits of the plant buried deep below the ground. They believe the seeds and fruits were put there by an ancient animal which stored them to eat during the winter. The seeds that scientists found failed to grow because they were damaged. However, the scientists were able to take genetic material from the fruit to grow a new plant. Then, this plant produced new seeds which the scientists were able to use to grow more plants.
A modern relative of the original flower still grows in Siberia, but when the ancient flower was grown, it had some important differences from the modern flower. The petals on the ancient flower were much longer and also spaced further apart. Studying the ancient flower will allow the scientists to learn more about how plants have evolved.
Before this, the oldest seed to have been grown was from a 2,000-year-year-old tree in Israel. The Russian scientists believe the reason why the Siberian seeds were preserved for so long is that they were buried in permanently frozen earth, which protected the genetic information in the seeds. The scientists believe that the permanently frozen soil in Siberia contains many other ancient seeds, so they may be able to bring back even older plants. This will help them better understand the history of plants and how they have changed over time.
【1】Recently, scientist have ________.
A.been able to bring a number of ancient animals back to life
B.begun using genetics to learn more about ancient plants and animals
C.started to create a dinosaur that could live on Earth today
D.tried to create new types of fossils to study how animals used to live
【2】How were Russian scientists able to grow Silenestenophylla?
A.They used genetic material from an ancient fruit they discovered.
B.They used ancient seeds that they had found deep below the ground.
C.They planted the seeds deep in the ground to protect them during the cold winter.
D.They planted fruit in a new kind of container that they had specially designed.
【3】What is one thing the Russian scientists learned by comparing the ancient plant with its modern relative?
A.The plant used to produce fewer flowers than it produces now.
B.The plant has evolved to have shorter petals on its flowers.
C.The ancient plant was a different color from its modern relative.
D.The modern plant is found across a wider area of Russia than the ancient one.
【4】The Russian scientists believe that ________.
A.it is unlikely that they can grow plants from seeds that are over 2,000 years old
B.ancient seeds that were kept in Israel will be easier to grow than Russian seeds
C.they will be able to grow plants in areas where the earth is permanently frozen
D.the frozen soil in Siberia is able to keep the DNA of plants safe for a long time
【5】Which of the following statements is true?
A.Russian scientists would like to use frozen earth to protect seeds.
B.Human DNA can be used to help scientists learn more about the genetic history of plants.
C.The fruit and seeds of Silenestenophylla may have been buried by an ancient animal.
D.The first plant that had flowers grew in Siberia over 32,000 years ago.
29、 It is well-known that twins are closer to each other than most brothers and sisters -- after all, they probably spend more time with each other. Parents of twins often notice that they develop special ways of communicating: they invent their own words and one can often finish the other's sentence. In exceptional(例外) circumstances(情况), this closeness becomes more extreme: they invent a whole language of their own, as in the case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy from Georgia in the USA, who communicated so successfully in their own special language that they did not speak any English at all until after they started school.
However, these special relationships are the result of lives spent almost entirely in each other's company. What happens when twins do not grow up together, when they are separated at birth for some reason? Are they just like any other strangers, or are there still special similarities between them? Professor Tom Bouchard of the University of Minnesota set out to find the answer to this question. He traced(追踪) sixteen pairs of twins, who were adopted by different families when they were babies, and often brought up in very different circumstances. Each twin was then interviewed about every small detail of their life.
The results of this research make a surprising reading. Many of the twins were found to have the same hobbies, many have suffered the same illnesses, and some have even had the same type of accident at the same point in their lives. One pair of middle-aged women arrived for their first meeting in similar dresses, another pair were wearing similar jewellery. The most incredible (unbelievable) similarities are to be found in the case of Jim Springer and Jim Lewis from Ohio in the USA. The story of the 'Jim Twins' made headline news across USA. Born to an immigrant woman in 1939, and adopted by different families at birth, both babies were named Jim by their new parents.
But what can be the explanation for these remarkable similarities? Is it all pure coincidence, or is the explanation in some way genetic? Research into the lives of twins is forcing some experts to admit that our personalities may be at least partly due to 'nature'. On the other hand, analysts are also anxious to emphasis(强调) that incredible coincidences do happen all the time, not just in the lives of twins.
【1】The case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy (Para. 1) is to show that ______.
A.twins communicate with each other in an unusual way.

B.can not be proved or accepted by all the experts.
