  • 26、Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent her life fighting for women to be treated equally. In doing so, she became an inspiring role model for women and girls around the world.

Her passion for women’s rights began when she was young. She started off her adult life having trouble finding a job. Even though she was smart, determined, and capable of doing the job, she was passed over primarily because she was a woman. She felt like she was being treated unfairly, or discriminated against, only because she was a woman. She wanted to do something about it. But at the time there were no laws in the United States to protect her.

She decided to devote her career to being a lawyer and fighting for equal rights of women. Then, early in her legal career, when she was 29 years old, Ms. Ginsburg took a trip to Sweden to perform legal research. What she saw really focused her on fighting for women in the workplace. Seeing the progress women had made in Sweden convinced her even more that America was behind and wrong in its treatment of women.

Back in the USA, laws advocating for women’s rights were missing. She decided that she would help invent laws, write them, and defend them. Ginsburg would also become a professor to help other women to become lawyers so that they could do the same thing. And then, in 1993, after years’ practicing and teaching laws, she became only the 2nd female justice of the Supreme Court.

At only 5'1" tall and as a generally quiet person, Ms. Ginsburg’s power came from her focus, her determination, and her integrity(诚实正直). She went on to become an inspiring role model for girls and women around the world and one of the most respected justices in history. She changed the lives of many women and girls in the United States and beyond.

  • 27、   Having spring around makes you feel different after such a long winter journey. The power  of sunshine brings us a lot of comfort, optimism, self-confidence and of course a smile. Imagine how great it will be if we are so positive all year round!

Living like this is possible if you really think about it. In order to exist in such a state of happiness, we must have sunshine radiating from within ourselves, shining from our  hearts,  minds and souls. Actually, that's your choice, and if you think that way then your own life will reflect that attitude of yours!

In order to make “sunshine” or rather “light” part of our being, it is so important that you watch your thoughts, your words and your actions so that you will accept what you really feel you'd like to create in your own life. Watch your thoughts and really become aware of how many negative thoughts pass through your mind about yourself and other people around you. Watch to see how often you gossip ( ) about other people, which is actually often attached with feelings of jealousy (妒忌) and insecurity(不安全感) about yourself.

You are also supposed to take a close look at your “intention”. How many of you do something for another person without expecting to receive something in return? It might not even have to be a material or physical thing you expect; expecting to be recognized for what you have done is enough to create conditions on your intention. Think about it!

Putting all of these together, it seems that most of us are creating monsters inside us just by simply talking, thinking and not putting our heart out with the right intention towards helping someone else. If you take all your negative attitudes in one hand and measure your need to feel “sunshine” in the other, you will see how both these elements really contradict each other.

Be brave and break your patterns and your habits this spring, and by doing so, you will allow the true sunshine to take place by radiating out from your heart and into your life and the lives of the people around you!

1You can have sunshine shining  from your inside  .

    A. by watching what you think, say and do

    B. by helping someone else

    C. by measuring what you need

    D. by changing your intention

2According to the writer, you don't feel secure about yourself when you  .

    A. expect to be recognized for what you've done

    B. take a close look at your intention

    C. gossip about other people

    D. become aware of your negative thoughts

3What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Breaking our patterns is the most important to get true sunshine.

    B. Expecting something in return for our help isn't the right intention.

    C. If we don't intend to help others, we create monsters inside us.

    D. Negative attitudes have little to do with happiness.

4The passage is written mainly to  .

    A. stress the importance of the positive lifestyle

    B. analyze the intentions and thoughts in our mind

    C. warn us about the bad effects of negative attitudes

    D. offer advice on having sunshine from our inside

  • 28、If you are thinking of putting your child in a private high school instead of a public one, you should do some research. You will find that most private schools offer some advantages.

One of the most important details of a good high school is small class size. Many public schools might have 30 or even 35 students in each class. However, many private schools limit the size to about 15 to 20 kids per class. This is a good thing because it allows each teacher to offer every student more attention.

Another thing to mention is the interesting classes. For example, while the typical (典型的) high school might only offer Spanish and French as foreign languages, private schools often have several other languages to choose from. This is especially important if your child is actually interested in studying a particular language that is not usually offered. Of course, many colleges also consider the various (各种各样的) classes as a good thing, since they can teach students more different subjects than usual.

Some colleges actually work closely with schools to make sure students are prepared well to get an advanced education. This means that teachers are careful to teach skills that can be used in college. Also, college teachers may be on-hand to talk to students and give them advice. If you think your child could use some help of this kind, which would likely help prepare him or her for college, you should look into schools offering these things.

A simple visit to the website or campus (校园) of a local private high school could give you the answers you are looking for. If you think your child would benefit from and appreciate these advantages, you should start researching. You are sure to find at least one that offers these benefits.

【1】By writing this text, the author is probably encouraging parents to________.

A.pay attention to their children’s study

B.appreciate the advantages of public schools

D.send their children to private high schools

【2】In the third paragraph the author stresses the importance of ________.

    A.teacher’s role

    B.different kinds of classes

    C.learning foreign languages

    D.proper study methods

【3】According to the text, colleges might like to choose students who________.

    A.live close to colleges

    B.have interest in sports

    C.have wide knowledge

    D.come from public high schools

  • 29、   Changes have been taking place in Philadelphia since 1984. One by one, graffiti-covered walls are being changed into outdoor art. So far, more than 1,800 murals (壁画) have been painted. Philadelphia now has more murals than any other American city.

The walls that were once ugly with graffiti (涂鸦) are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP). Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia’s Anti-Graffiti Network. Jane Golden is the MAP’s artistic director. “When people ask me what our program is about,” she says, “I answer them with one word: hope.” Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some onetime graffiti writers even help paint MAP murals.

The MAP’s work, says Golden, is all about developing a sense of community. When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been “Safe Streets,” “Love and Care,” and “Peace Walk.”

The MAP receives up to 50 requests for murals each week. Last year, the workers painted 140 murals.

“The making of a mural enters people’s collective memory as an extraordinary, pleasant moment in neighborhood history” says Golden, who began as a muralist in Los Angeles.

1What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Love, from Graffiti Writers to Muralists

    B. MAP, a New Company in Philadelphia

    C. Jane, an Excellent Mural Artist

    D. Hope, One Wall at a Time

2What is the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia aimed at?

    A. Helping the young find jobs. B. Protecting the neighborhood.

    C. Fighting against graffiti. D. Attracting more visitors.

3How does the MAP decide on the message for a mural?

    A. By having discussions with people in the community.

    B. By seeking advice from the city government.

    C. By learning from the young graffiti writers.

    D. By studying the history of the city.

4Which of the following words best describes the work of the MAP?

    A. Difficult. B. Dangerous.

    C. Experimental. D. Successful.
