22、It seems strange that while three quarters of the world is covered with water, we sill don’t have enough fresh, clean and safe drinking water. Most of the earth’s water is salt water of the seas. Less than 3% of the water in the world is fresh. 68.7% of fresh water is in the form of ice in the polar areas(极地), and much fresh water is polluted and dangerous to use. Some diseases spread by polluted water are the most common causes for death among children under five in the poor countries.
In some countries, women and children spend much of their time going out to collect water. They often walk many kilometers each day to get just enough water for their families to cook, wash and drink.
