Kathy: an animal doctor What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened in your job? Probably the dog that bit me. It wasn’t a big one—I’m not afraid of the big ones. The small ones are the worst. It gave me a very nasty(凶狠的)bite. Have you ever done any other jobs? Yes, I did many kinds of jobs when I was a student. One summer I did fruit-picking in Spain. What’s the worst job you’ve ever done? In order to improve my English, I worked for a rich family in New York. I never had a day off and I had to do everything—cooking, cleaning, shopping—and look after their bad children. I left after two weeks and managed to get a job as a waitress in an Italian restaurant. |
Peter: an actor What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened in your job? So many bad things have happened—but I think my worst moment was when I read my first bad review in the newspaper. They wrote terrible things about me, and I was so angry. After that I didn’t read my reviews any more. Have you ever done any other jobs? Oh yes, it’s hard to make a living as an actor. So I’ve done lots of part-time jobs over the years. For example, I’ve worked in a shop, sold ice cream at the beach. What’s the worst job you’ve ever done? The worst job I’ve ever done was at an egg-packing factory. Working conditions are terrible—you stand for hours at the end of a belt(传送带), putting eggs into boxes. You can’t have a break, and if you want to go to the toilet, you have to ask for permission. And worst of all, the smell was terrible—I’ve never eaten an egg since then. |

26、A huge fire swept through Notre Dame Cathedral (巴黎圣母院) in central Paris on Monday afternoon, 15 April, 2019.
As it burned into the evening, firefighters fought all night to prevent one of the main bell towers from collapsing (倒塌) and tried to save priceless artwork. The US President suggested using water-dropping aircraft. However, dropping much water from aircraft on the 12th century structure could cause the whole building to fall.
Thousands of people gathered in the streets around the cathedral, watching the fire in silence. Some could be seen crying, while others sang hymns or said prayers (祷告).
By early Tuesday morning, officials said the fire was under control and the church’s main structure had been saved. Also, several invaluable artifacts (珍贵的文物) had been saved from the burning cathedral. However, the fire caused cathedral’s spire of the tower to collapse completely.
Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, Notre Dame is the most famous of the Gothic (哥特式的) cathedrals of the Middle Ages as well as one of the most valuable structures in the world. It is a symbol of French and European culture, well-known to the world after the book Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo was published.
And it wasn’t until nineteenth century before the Cathedral was fully restored (修复) thanks in part to the writer Victor Hugo.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but people wondered whether it had something to do with the restorations. French President Emmanuel Macron rushed to the scene and straight into meetings at the Paris police headquarters nearby. In a speech later Monday night, he promised to rebuild the church and said he would seek international help to do so.

27、Scientists have found a new use for children’s imaginations(想象力)—to make Stomachaches go away.
The BBC reports a new study that shows: “Children can be taught to use their Imaginations to deal with stomachaches.” This may be very good news for parents who need a quick cure for their sick children.
Any mother or father understands the stomach problem is one of the most frequent(时常发生的) things their children complain about. Around twenty percent of children suffer from stomachaches that doctors cannot find a reason for.
This new research is especially good for kids with active imaginations. Researchers found that the more creative the child is, the better he or she is at imagining the pain away.
The researchers used a relaxing CD with children. A voice guided them through different fantasy(幻想) situations. One of these was pretending to be floating on a cloud. Thirty children took part in the tests. Half of them used the “guided imagery” method, and the other half received normal medicines. Researchers found 73.3 percent of the CD users reported a reduction in pain. This compared to only 26.7 percent of kids who got normal treatment.
Study leader Dr Miranda Tilburg was very excited about her findings. She believed that it was a very cheap and easy way to stop children’s stomachaches. She said it would not work as well with adults.
