25、The Lantern Festival, a traditional Chinese festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month. The day leads to the first full moon night of the year, and is also the night when the earth returns to spring. It falls on Tuesday this year.
The first month of the new year is a positive (zhēng) month. Read once (一声zhēng),but why not read it four times (四声Zhèng)? It turned out that Qin Shihuang’s name was Ying Zhèng, and in order to avoid his name, he ordered it to be pronounced this way. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), Emperor Wen ordered that the 15th day of the first lunar month was the Lantern Festival. In ancient times, young women hardly stepped out of their houses. But during the Lantern Festival, it was a tradition that all people, including those young women, came out for lantern shows. Watching lanterns at night was just a chance for young women to find a man they like. Another activity, guessing the answers to lantern riddles (谜语), gave young people a chance to talk with each other and knew more about each other.
The lanterns have different characters, like flying birds, leaping fishes, and shining fireworks, showing people’s joy. Riddles are written on the lanterns, and many people like them very much. Chinese people regard the dragon as a symbol of luck. At the festival, people perform dragon lantern dances and look forward to the year’s good weather and peace. Eating yuanxiao is another tradition. Yuanxiao is made of rice. It can be boiled, fried to eat.

On a Saturday afternoon, when you are enjoying ice cream in front of the TV or playing on the computer, what are kids at your age doing on the other side of the planet? Are they at school? What do they do for fun every day? Find out here:
1. Education
School is expensive for many African kids. Lots of families can’t afford school uniforms or exercise books even if they don’t have to pay for school.
For those are lucky enough to go to school, they have a lot to learn. Some take two language classes: English or French and their native language. There is also Math, Science, History, Social Studies, and Geography. Plenty of housework takes up much of kids’ time after school. They have to get water and firewood for the family every day. Then, there’s cleaning, washing and helping Mum with the meal.
2. Daily fun
It’s not all work and no play. Sports are very popular. Sport is great because kids do not need money to play.
Kids can make goals with twigs (嫩枝) and their own footballs with plastic and bits of strings (绳子). They play in the desert dust and the streets of old towns.
There’re many football teams for teenagers in Africa. The first kids’ football teams were set up in Kenya (肯尼亚) in 1987.
3. Internet
Egypt and South Africa are the top two users of the Internet in the continent. All of the capital cities in Africa can get on the Internet.
But fewer than one out of every 250 people in Africa can get on the Internet. It’s really expensive. To surf the net for 20 hours costs over 600 yuan. This is more than the average monthly pay per person.
Some schools offer computer lessons but few students can enjoy computer fun at home. South Africa Lesley Harrison, 12, wishes he had the Internet at home. “I could show my family lots of stuff. No one where I live even knows what the Internet is.”

27、 Did you know that about 55% of communication is unspoken, so in fact, our bodies are actually saying more than our words. I find that the key to a successful conversation in any language is to speak to people not only in their spoken language but also with the body language they know best.
Britain, along with much of Northern Europe, has a non—touch culture, so personal space is very important. In a formal(正式的) situation, we would usually greet each other with a handshake. Informally, but not so often, my British friends and I would greet with a hug. Hardly ever would we greet with a kiss on the cheek, let alone a hug and two kisses on the cheek!
Here in the south of Italy, and in many different parts of the world, both men and women greet with two kisses on the cheek, use a lot of hand signs and often touch each other. In other words, little personal space is left between people when communicating.
At university, I have learnt to successfully communicate in spoken Italian. And since I moved to live with the local people, I have also started to pick up their body language. Sometimes, I find myself not knowing what hand signs to use when expressing myself. However, what I know for sure is that I would miss the opportunity to fully put myself in the Italian culture if I keep my personal space unbroken.
Here are 5 body language tips in Italy:
● Use different signs. head, arms and hands.
● Use facial expressions. Always smile at people! It is said that smiling is the most powerful unspoken way to communicate friendliness.
● Use eye contact, because "the eyes are the window to the soul."
● Don't worry about personal space. Italians are a people who like to use the sense of touch, so moving away or keeping your distance may be considered as being unfriendly.
● Touch. When meeting and leaving, always shake hands.

Have you ever heard of a game of “catch”? It 【1】 (play) between two people. They throw 【2】 ball back and forth (来回地). The two people are close enough to talk, but too far to touch.
They might have baseball gloves, or they might use their 【3】 (hand). In fact, playing catch is part 【4】 baseball practice to make you get used to using a ball and a glove. But any American kid will tell you it’s more than that.
Playing catch is a time for kids to be with their fathers. When they play catch, they are 【5】 (worry) about nothing except catching a ball. It’s a time when words move as 【6】 (smooth) as the ball itself back and forth, easy and relaxing. It’s the 【7】 (good) excuse to spend time together.
When you ask some Americans 【8】 (talk) about the good memories of their dads, they nearly always say something about playing catch. Why? Probably 【9】 their dads are usually very busy. A catch game is a time that is only for one thing. This is a time when a kid has his or her 【10】 (dad) attention. There is no work, no phone and no other people to take your dad away from you. For the time that it takes to play a game of catch—your dad is all yours.
