21、 All eyes were on Jack Ma. The chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. left his position on Teachers’ Day from leading the e-commerce (电子商务) giant he founded 20 years ago.
“I still have lots of dreams to go after.” Ma wrote in an open letter last year to announce his parting. “The world is big, and I am still young, so I want to try new things.”
The 55-year-old businessman showed that he was ready for new things by arriving at his farewell party dressed up like a rock star.
In fact, his rags-to-riches (白手起家的) story is a good example of doing something different. Visiting the United States in 1995, Ma saw the internet and had the idea of setting up his own trading website. In 1999, he founded Alibaba with a group of friends in a shared apartment, struggling for years to get it off the ground. With all the challenges, the company slowly brought e-commerce to China.
Although his success has inspired a number of Chinese tech businessmen, Ma pointed out that the key is having a dream. “It’s the dreams that keep us full of confidence and never afraid of setbacks (挫折).” Ma said in a video posted on Sept 9.
Now the experienced businessman is looking to focus on education. What can he offer? “I’m not going to teach English; I’m not going to teach business. But I’m going to teach young people how to face challenges.” he told Bloomberg News.
Skilled sailors were never made on calm waters. As Ma said, “Today is cruel. Tomorrow is crueler. But the day after tomorrow is beautiful.”

A.Dreams can guide us to further our education. B.Dreams can give us confidence and courage.
C.Dreams can push us to set up new businesses. D.Dreams can lead us to offer more to society.
【3】What lessons will be offered by Ma?
A.How to operate business. B.How to learn English.
C.How to face challenges. D.How to set up a website.
【4】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Confidence is the key to success.
C.Skilled sailors like calm waters. D.We should face challenges bravely.
22、 What do you do when you have a problem? Would you ask a crowd of strangers for a solution? It may sound strange, but it has inspired innovation and is the thinking behind “challenge prizes”.
Challenge prizes come in many shapes but the basic concept remains the same. Rather than consult an expert for a solution, you offer the prize to anyone who believes they can solve it and present the first to do so with a prize. Many would argue. “Who is better qualified than an expert?” But actually, not using experts seems to result in a great deal of thinking outside of the box.
Some argue that formal education can kill creativity as it sometimes only teaches a single method to achieve a task. In the same way, some suggest that experts can have the same problem. “If we set up a challenge prize, the ‘experts’ that compete in it may tell us it can’t be done.” says Marcus Shingles, former CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation.
There are other advantages too. “You’re not asking people to use a particular solution to solve that problem. So you get this large amount of diversity,” adds Shingles.
Yet, challenge prizes also come with problems. You don’t want to create a challenge prize which encourages people to solve a problem where there is no demand. In 1979, a prize of £ 100,000 was claimed by the first person to fly under human power across the English Channel. Yet, it has not led to the adoption of human-powered flight as a form of travel. And there are those who devote their time and energy only to see no return at all. Overall, challenge prizes don’t seem to be going out of style anytime soon. To many, the challenge to innovate and the attraction of the prize are too much to resist.
【1】The basic concept behind a challenge prize is .
A.allowing ordinary people to compete with experts
B.challenging formal education that kills creativity
C.rewarding the first problem-solver of a challenge
D.picking out someone more qualified than experts
【2】According to Marcus Shingles, what can be the problem with “experts”?
A.They are less daring than non-experts.
B.They suffer from fixed thinking patterns.
C.They tend to overlook details of a problem.
D.They focus on theory rather than practice.
【3】What does the author suggest about challenge prizes?
A.They may not serve practical purposes.
B.Their appeal mainly lies in the prize.
C.They are a waste of time and energy.
D.Their popularity is to last for decades.
【4】What of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.The amazing power of cooperation
B.A reform in formal education

D.The problem-solving prizes
23、The Internet has revolutionized our lives to such an extent that for most people, the global network has become more than just a tool but rather an indispensable aid in everyday life. More and more people go online as wireless networks have brought the Internet closer and closer: it's on our mobile phones, in our cars and TV sets, in hospital surgery rooms and in fishing boats that battle the waves of the Atlantic.
And this revolution has brought along with it a new way of shopping. Both big and small, e-commerce websites have literally flooded the Internet by the hundreds of thousands. Anything you can buy from a brick and mortar store(实体店) you can also buy online: from food and clothes to guns and bombs, no matter what you're looking for, you're bound to find the right online store with just a few clicks of the mouse.
This revolution has sent cold trembles down the backbones of brick and mortar business owners. And what was their reaction? They've opened online stores to go hand in hand with their conventional businesses. Nowadays, every "Mom and Pop's" cheesecake store also has a website. In a recent survey, 68% of small business owners have stated that they are scared of being put out of business by the powerful flood that e-commerce has become. So it's no wonder many of them have decided to join the revolution and establish some kind of an online presence even though most of them have stated that they dislike the Internet.
But do the big players have reasons to be afraid? Are we going to start seeing ghostly, deserted Wal-Marts across the country? Probably not in the near future but the day will come when most people will just stop shopping offline anymore. A trip to Wal-Marts wastes time, burns gas and sometimes adds a few extra dots on the stress counter.
The recent advancements in mobile technology and the introduction of mobile phones with improved web capabilities has even made some people order their groceries when they get out from work and have them delivered at their doorstep by the time they get home. And as "Time is money", this practice is lifesaving for people who work two jobs.
Technology will continue to advance and e-commerce will follow closely in its footsteps. Everything will become easier and less time consuming, leaving us more time to enjoy the things that really matter in life: the ones we love, our friends and hobbies.
【1】What is Para. 1 mainly about?
A. The popularity of mobile phones.

A. to save time B. to follow the fashion
C. to release pressure D. to protect environment
【4】What would be the best title for the passage?

24、Scientists around the world have been studying the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean known as El Nino(厄尔尼诺). The appearance of El Nino is known to affect the weather around the world. Scientists still do not completely understand it. Yet they now find they can use it to tell about the future in different areas of the world.
One example is the work of two scientists at Columbia University in New York, Mark Cane and Gordon Eshel. A scientist of Zimbabwe, Roger Buckland worked with them. They have found that when El Nino appears, Zimbabwe has little or no rain. This means corn crops in Zimbabwe are poor. The last El Nino was in 1991 to 1993. That was when southeastern Africa suffered a serious lack of rain.
The scientists wrote about their recent work in the publication Nature. Their computer program can tell when an El Nino will develop up to a year before it does. They suggest that this could provide an effective early warning system for southern Africa, and could prevent many people from starving.
