21、Do you think there is too much noise in our city? Perhaps you do. If you live near an airport, you will probably feel unhappy because of the noise of planes. It is said that the noise of planes or trains or trucks can make one deaf if he keeps on hearing it.
Noise is a kind of pollution. However, most people in our city do not seem to mind noise. They do not know it is harmful to their health. They like to enjoy music when they are doing their work. It is a new danger that music is played through powerful loudspeakers (声音大的喇叭). It can reach 120 decibels (分贝).
It is known that continuous (连续不断的) noise of over 85 decibels can make people deaf. For example, when newspapers and books are being printed, the noise is over 85 decibels, and some of the workers become deaf. Scientists believe that 10 percent of all the workers in British printing offices have been deafened (使……聋) by the noise. Besides, noise of less than 85 decibels can make some people tired and nervous. We all know that too much noise makes life difficult and unpleasant. It can do great harm to health and prevent people from working well. Workers in noisy offices are not so efficient as workers in quiet offices. Noise makes people less efficient. Can anything be done to keep down noise?
In Britain, the government has made several laws to keep down noise. It has spent a good deal of money making airports and main roads quieter. In Japan, America and Canada there are such laws too.

When you are in Hongkong, you must be very careful in the streets because the traffic drives on the left. It is different from that in other areas of China. If you are the first time to come to Hongkong, you must look to the right side and then the left before you cross the street. If the traffic lights are red, the traffic must stop. Then people on foot can cross the road carefully. But if the traffic lights are green, the traffic can go. People on foot mustn't cross. When people go to or come from work in the morning and evening, the streets are very busy. 23、My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around our neighbourhood. Two dog walkers passed by and one of them said, “Never seen that dog around here before.”
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone number on it, but no one answered.
The dog was really thin. It didn’t have many teeth left.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend ate its food.
Finally we got it home. We gave it a blanket, more food and wondered what to do next.
After trying for many times, we got a reply from the number. A lady came. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. It was very old and should probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn’t bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned home.
Here is the truth of the story:
In fact, Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I still didn’t find it possible. I was going to turn and go when an old, weak dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home. In the song “Love Is Not a Fight”, Warren Barfield talks about marriage. He sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”

24、I dreamed I had an interview with God. “So you would like to interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time,” I said. “My time is eternity(永恒的 ) ”God smiled, “What questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered, “That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived. ” God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while.
And then I asked, “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?” “To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is to let themselves be loved. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently. To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.”
“Thank you for your time,” I said humbly. “Is there anything else you would like your children to know?”God smiled and said,“Just know that I am here always.”

25、Water Park Safety
Water parks can be a lot of fun for kids, as long as you keep safety in mind. Before you go, make sure the park is monitored by qualified (有资质的) lifeguards. Once there, read all posted s【1】 before letting your child on any rides (many rides have age, height, weight, or health requirements, and each has a different depth of water).
Teach your kids to follow all rules and directions, such as walking i【2】 of running and always going down the water slide in the right position—feet first and face up. A Coast-Guard approved life jacket is a good idea, too.
Know which rides are appropriate for your child’s a【3】 and development. For example, wave pools can quickly go from calm to rough, putting even a good swimmer in over his or her head. Younger children can be f【4】 by older kids’ splashing and roughhousing.
What to Do in an Emergency
Whenever a child is missing, always check the pool first. Survival d【5】 on a quick rescue and restarting breathing as soon as possible.
If you find a child in the water, immediately get the child out while calling 1【6】 for help. If someone else is around you, have them call 911. CPR should be b【7】 done by someone who is trained in CPR. When the emergency number is called, follow the instructions the emergency operators provide.
If you think the child may have suffered a neck injury, such as with diving, then keep the child on his or her back and brace the neck and shoulders with your hands and forearms to help keep the neck immobilized, until emergency help arrives. Don’t let the child move. Speak in calm tones to keep the child comforted.
