24、 Big data (大数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies and governments. One set of data can have people’s names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.
Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.
Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict (预测) if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he, she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.
How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.

25、 Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform (制服), whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?
Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (百姓的) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity (身份) than to step out of uniform?
Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax- deductible (可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.
Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality (个人) experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.
Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial (最初的) expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.
【1】It is surprising that Americans who take pride in variety and individuality ________.
A. still judge a man by his clothes
B. enjoy having a professional identity

D. will respect an elevator operator as much as a general in uniform
【2】People are accustomed to thinking that a man in uniform ________.
A. discards his social identity
B. suggests quality work
C. appears to be more practical
D. looks superior to a person in civilian clothes
【3】The chief function of a uniform is to ________.
A. provide practical benefits to the wearer
B. make the wearer catch the public eye
C. inspire the wearer’s confidence in himself
D. provide the wearer with a professional identity
【4】Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage above?
A. Americans are proud of their variety and individuality instead of a uniform.
B. People trust the television repairman who wears uniform more than one who appears in civilian clothes.

【5】The best title for this passage would be ________.
A. Uniforms and Society
B. Advantages and Disadvantages of Uniforms

26、 Japan fixes English
You’ve probably seen some pretty “interesting” English translations. For example, it is common to see “Chinglish” on restaurant menus and on signs in public areas in China.
Japan is now working to improve its English signs so that tourists will have an easier time getting around during the 2020 Olympics.
Improving public transportation signs is especially important, as tourists will take trains and buses to get around. The Japan Tourism Agency recently carried out a two-month investigation into the websites of 85 train and bus companies around the country.
The agency found some rather odd translations. For example, one transportation company refers to children as “dwarfs(侏儒)”. Other transportation errors include “Forgotten Center” for “lost and found”, and “release place” for “ticket machine”.
But does Japan have enough time to correct its English? One expert thinks it’s too late. Gregory Hadley, a professor at Niigata University, thinks it can’t be done. He pointed out that many companies simply won’t be able to afford to hire translators and reprint their materials.
In addition, the people who originally translated the materials probably won’t want to lose face by admitting to translating them correctly, he added.
Whether it can fix its signs or not, Japan is preparing for a wave of tourism. About 30 million people visited the country last year and the number will hit 40 million next year, when the 2020 Olympics officially kick off.
【1】In Japan, which of the following is the most important to improve before the 2020 Olympics?
A.Restaurant menus. B.Tourist information centers.
C.Public transportation signs. D.Public restroom signs.
【2】A “Forgotten Center” probably refers to “________” in Japan.
A.dwarfs B.a lost and found area C.a ticket machine D.a youth hostel
【3】What is Gregory Hadley’s opinion about Japan’s English signage situation?
A.There are too many simple transportations in Japan.
B.Improving signs in public areas is important.
C.Changing incorrect signs makes companies lose face.
D.Japan won’t be able to finish correcting its English in all public areas.
【4】Compared to last year, the number of people who visit Japan will increase by________next year.
A.10 million. B.20 million. C.30 million. D.40 million.
【5】What does the underlined phrase “kick off” mean in Chinese?
A.踢开 B.爆发 C.开始 D.反冲
27、The first chocolate was eaten by people in South America hundreds years ago. In those days, the people didn’t really eat chocolate. They used the coca bean(可可豆) to make a chocolate drink and they enjoyed it very much. Many years later, the coca bean was brought to other countries and people came to love the taste of chocolate.

However, at first only plain chocolate (a kind of chocolate without milk and with very little sugar) was produced and sold. Milk chocolate came later and this was made by adding milk to the chocolate. The first milk chocolate bar was made in Cadbury’s factory in 1897. Their most famous chocolate, Cadbury’s Milk Bar, was made in 1905. It has been the most popular chocolate in Britain and around the world for over 100 years.
