24、 It was September. I had just entered Grade Six. As a shy boy, I chose to be all alone reading books during the breaks while most of my classmates were eager to make new friends. And I was doing well until the third lesson on the first day.
A teacher had us fill out a questionnaire (问卷) with "get to know you" questions. I thought she would read them privately, so I felt safe to share who I was. However, after the teacher collected the papers, she mixed them up and passed them to the class. One by one, we read out the student's name and then our two favorite answers. My paper went to a mean kid. His "favorite answers" of mine were the two worst ones to be read out loud.
The first question was "What's your favorite movie?" While other kids wrote the latest movies, my answer was "The Wizard of Oz (绿野仙踪)." It was a film made in 1939. The next question was "Where would you like to travel?" The others had said "Australia" or "Japan." I wrote, "Wherever a good book takes me." A loud laugh broke out immediately.
My face burned. I stared at my schoolbag. How I wished I could disappear inside it!
But then, something amazing happened. A voice from the back of the room said, "Guys, cut it out!" It was Michael, a popular boy. The room went silent.
Michael then turned to the teacher, "Why are you letting this happen? What is the point if we are making fun of each other?"
Fifteen years have passed since then. I don't remember the teacher or the mean kids. But Michael was the hero in my eyes. I can't forget how it felt when he spoke up for me.

26、Scene 1
On a wild mountain, two goats met on a rock just over a high cliff (峭壁). The rock was so narrow that there was neither room for them to pass each other nor to turn round and go back.
One of them with great care laid himself down on the narrow rock, pressing as close to the rock as he could. Then the other goat gently and softly stepped over his friend, till, safely past him, he could lightly get away.
The goat that had lain down then drew himself up, safe and free to leap again from rock to rock, and eat the sweet grass on the hills.
Scene 2
Two other goats met on the banks of a wild, rushing stream. They found there was a tree across the stream. It formed a bridge from one side to the other.
They stood for a moment with one foot on the tree, each thinking that the other would draw back. But neither of them would give away, and they met at last on the middle of the narrow bridge!
They then began to push and fight with their horns (犄角), till at last their feet slipped, and both the goats fell into the stream, and were lost in the waters!
Both might have been saved if either of them had known how to give way to another at the right time.

27、
English book Animal Farm (1945) tells a story about farm animals. They are fed up with (受够了) Mr Jones, the farmer. He treats them badly, so they decide to kick him off the farm and run the farm themselves.
One day an old pig called Old Major gathers the animals around him. He tells them that all animals should stand together. He says they should take over the farm. They say that all animals are equal.
After they get rid of (摆脱) Mr Jones, two pigs become the leaders of Animal Farm. One pig called Snowball is a great speaker. He has big ideas for Animal Farm. The other leader is a pig called Napoleon. Napoleon is a crafty (狡猾的) animal. He brings together supporters by offering them advantages.
Napoleon makes a war against Snowball and kicks him away from the farm. He turns Snowball into a big enemy. He says that Snowball is working with Farmer Jones and other farmers to do harm to Animal Farm.
But as it turns out it is Napoleon who is working with the enemies of the animals. He joins up with the old human enemies of the animals. But he tells the animals that he is working for them. At the same time the animals work hard. It seems that it is as bad to live under Napoleon as it was under Farmer Jones!
Why is the story so important?
Animal Farm is an excellent choice for learners of English because it’s very short. The language is also simple.
Like many famous stories Animal Farm is not just a book. It was played on the BBC radio in 1947. The big modern way of telling stories is in movies of course. Orwell’s book has become a film twice. Perhaps it won’t surprise you that the first one (1954) was a cartoon. In 1984 another film was made. This was a live-action (真人版的) film. The famous book has also been put on in the theater. In 1984 a play was made and it toured a number of British cities.
