  • 24、I was 10 the year my cousin Marley’s parents gave her a painful Christmas surprise: they were getting a divorce(离婚). My aunt went to California, but my uncle decided to get her back. There was one matter: where to put his young daughter. Luckily, my mother loved Marley, giving her more attention than her family ever did.

On that Christmas Eve, my cousin arrived on our doorstep carrying an old blue suitcase. Before she stepped inside, Marley said, “It doesn’t matter. When my parents come back, we’ll have a bigger Christmas than this.”

Late on the night Marley arrived, my mom came into my room, her arms filled with packages.I knew they were my Christmas presents. “I know how you love surprises but we have to decide which ones to give to Marley.”

My mother carefully opened the gifts. Wow! I saw ice skates, red leather gloves and a dollhouse. The last present was the music box we’d asked the lady at the local store to take down and play for us over and over again.

“Which ones?” my mother asked. “She can have the ice skates,” I said reluctantly(勉强地). “That’s good,” my mother said. She began to tape the packages up again. Then she stopped and asked, “Are you sure about these?” At that moment, I realized she expected more from me than I had already given. So I gave her the music box, too, and ___________. The next morning, Marley’s eyes were resolute(坚定的). She expected nothing and wanted us to know she didn’t care. But when she saw her name on the biggest box, she couldn’t hide her excitement. I thought my happiness would be cut in half. Instead it was doubled.

As COVID-19 spreads throughout China and the rest of the world, an important question has yet to be answered: where did the virus come from? The latest study indicated that pangolins(穿山甲)may be an intermediate host of virus, according to Xinhua. However, bats are supposed to be the original cause the most probably.

“We don’t know the source yet, but there’s pretty strong evidence that this is a bat origin COVID-19,” said Peter Dazsak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, according to The New York Times. When you look at the genetic sequence(基因序列)of the virus, and you match it up with COVID-19, the closest ones are from bats.

So why are bats the source of so many deadly kinds of viruses and why don’t they suffer from any illnesses? Bats are mammals(哺乳动物)that have a long life and live with millions of other bats in caves, where they can potentially spread the virus far and wide. As the only flying mammal, their body temperature is high, similar to a fever. It’s this fact that may help bats’ unique immune system in protecting them from the ill effects of viruses.

It’s strange to be found that the virus outbreak was traced to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, a place where no bats were sold. How could this be? “It seems likely that another animal host is acting as an intermediate host between bats and humans,” said Wu Guizhen, of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Live Science.

But are bats truly to blame for the virus or should we be blaming ourselves? It’s the mistake of humans for getting closer to virus-carrying bats. Bats are an important animal in our ecosystem when it comes to pollinating (授粉) many fruits such as bananas and apples. We need to allow them to continue pollination and keep them away from our markets and mouths.

1From the passage, ______ may be an intermediate host between bats and humans.

    A.snakes B.masked civets(果子狸) C.pangolins D.sea mammals

2Why do scientists consider the virus a bat origin COVID-19?

A.Because the genetic sequence are the closest to bats.

B.Because bats don’t suffer from the illness.

C.Because bats spread the virus far and wide.

D.Because bats were sold in Huanan Seafood Market.

3It’s ______ that protects bats from the ill effects of viruses.

    A.the flying skill B.the echo-location

C.high body temperature D.the genetic sequence

4How much do we know about bats?

What kind of animals are they?   Why don’t they suffer from the ill effects of viruses?

How long do they live?   Where do they live?

    A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④

5We may infer from the passage that   .

A.We should kill all the bats to keep healthy.

B.Humans can continue to sell and eat bats after the illness.

C.Bats can help keep the ecosystem balanced.

D.COVID-19 can only be found in bats.

  • 26、   As we are getting older and older, our ability to think and remember starts to become worse. But not everyone is like this. Some people are super-agers, who are over the age of 80, but have the brain of much younger people.

Scientists know that parts of the brain become smaller in size with age. But the change of the super-agers’ goes much more slowly. In her recent study, Emily Rogalski, a neuroscientist (神经科学家), showed that super-agers have young brains. The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thicker in super-agers. “When we look at a super-ager’s brain, we see that it looks more like a 50-year-old brain than an 80-year-old one”.

▲ Most of them like travelling and playing sports. They always enjoy reading. And they usually have healthy relationships and spend time with friends. “Growing old,” she adds, “does not have to be depressing and sad. Perhaps if we expect a little better from ourselves, we’ll understand that not all getting old makes us sad”.

Rogalski said jokingly that super-agers do not grow on trees — meaning they are special and few. She says she wants to find out why a super-ager’s mind is working so well and not getting old as quickly as most.

The science behind super-agers is a new, but growing field. It attracts many scientists. Scientists in the research offer the advice to us: Stay active. Learn new things. Challenge yourself. Develop healthy relationships. We may also become super-agers if we follow the advice.

    1Super-agers are people ________.

A.over 80 with older brains B.under 80 with older brains

C.over 80 with younger brains D.under 80 with younger brains

2What can we know from the passage?

A.The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown thinner in super-agers.

B.Scientists have found out why a super-ager’s mind is working so well.

C.Super-agers are common and very easy to find in our lives .

D.More and more scientists may get into the study of super-agers.

3Which of the following sentences can be put in ▲ ?

A.Scientists find that super-agers usually live simple lives.

B.Scientists say that super-agers hardly ever forget things.

C.Scientists find that super-agers have some physical differences from others.

D.Scientists say that super-agers have several things in common.

  • 27、   I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in "Section L". I found out later that everyone called Section L "Loserville". It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!

I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable (痛苦的) I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that. Ana's texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings, but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, and I had to try to make things better.

The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!

I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn't, I was still stuck in "Loserville", and some people were still mean (苛刻) to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.

But what did change was me-I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!

I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn't so hard any more. Even though I couldn't change my situation, I could change my attitude-and that made all the difference.

    1"Loserville" is a section for ________.

    A.smart students B.low achievers C.class leaders D.new comers

2The writer complained all the time in the new environment because ________.

A.Ana didn't text back to her B.she was a good student

C.her friends hurt her feelings D.she was unfairly treated

3What made a difference in changing the situation?

A.She managed to go back to Illinois. B.She ended the friendship with Ana.

C.She began to make friends with others. D.She fought back with her classmates.

4What's the best title for the passage?

A.Friends Forever B.Say Goodbye to "Loserville"

C.An Incident at School D.Unhappiness in "Loserville"
