  • 1、I think it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. It is not enough to just get good grades at school. 61Children these days depend on their parents too much. They are always asking, 62“你能给我拿一下这个吗?or “Could you help me with that?” Doing chores helps to develop children’s independence and teaches them how to look after themselves. 63It also helps them to understand the idea of fairness. Since they live in one house with their parents, they should know that everyone should do their part in keeping it clean and tidy. Our neighbors’son got into a good college but during his first year,64他不知道怎样照顾自己.As a result, he often fell ill and his grades dropped.65.The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).

The study also found the effect(效果) is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure(结构) of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings had the same result in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

1From Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2, we can learn that ___________.

A.learning a second language can make you smarter

B.grammar is not very important in learning English

C.you can start to learn another language if you are smart

D.it is best to learn a second language in a British university

2The underlined word “bilinguals” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ___________.

A.people who study language learning B.people who can speak two languages

C.languages spoken by British people D.languages children learn before five

3Dr. Andrea Mechelli and his team have found that ___________.

A.it is not very good to start learning a language too early

B.it usually takes quite a long time to master a new language

C.learning a second language changes the structure of the brain

D.people who don’t learn a second language have no grey matter

4In the last two paragraphs, the writer tells us that ___________.

A.the younger you start to learn a second language, the better

B.improving math skills is as difficult as learning a second language

C.Italian people are supposed to learn English as a second language

D.the best age to learn a second language is between two and thirty-four

5This passage is mainly about ___________.

A.language learning and math skills B.how to learn a second language well

C.the importance of learning English D.the good effect of learning a language

  • 27、“The world’s oceans are slowly getting more acidic,” say scientists. The researchers from California report that the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The lowering of the water’s PH value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat to current ocean life if it continues, they warn. Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature.

Increasing use of oil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid. Scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century.

These researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change. “This level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing CO2 into the atmosphere,” said Dr. Caldeira. “And we predict the amount of future acidity will exceed (超过) anything we have seen over the last several hundred million years, let alone perhaps after rare disastrous events such as asteroid impacts.”

However, it is not absolutely clear what that means for ocean life. Most organisms live near the surface, where the greatest PH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean life forms may be more sensitive to PH changes. Coral reefs and other organisms whose shells contain calcium carbonate (小行星) may be particularly affected if the water’s acidity levels keep going up, the team predict. They could find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower PH.

In recent years some people have suggested storing carbon dioxide from power stations in the deep ocean as a way of dealing with global warming. But Dr. Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered. “Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing--because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet, and when CO2, is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.”

    【1】According to Dr. Caldeira, ________.

A.ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thing

B.more oil fuels will be used in the near future

C.scientists may predict climate changes with computer models

D.the future situation of the amount of acidity is extremely serious

【2】If the water’s acidity level keeps rising, ________.

A.ocean life whose structures contain calcium carbonate may be affected

B.the waters’ PH value will become higher and higher

C.organisms living near the surface are more sensitive to pH changes

D.some disastrous events will occur more often than before

【3】What does the underlined word “acidic” probably mean?

    A.污染的

    B.酸的

    C.复杂的

    D.温暖的

【4】The purpose of this passage is to ________.

A.show people the findings of a research team

B.inform people of how acid the ocean is now

C.introduce Dr. Caldeira and his team’s research
