24、 The sight of a tailor-shop gave me a strong wish to throw off my old clothes and get a new suit. Could I afford it? No, I had nothing in the world but a million-pound note. So I forced myself to go on by. But soon I was drawing back again. The temptation troubled me a lot. I must have passed that shop six times during that struggle. At last I gave in, I had to. I asked if they had a cheap suit. The fellow I spoke to made no answer at first, looked me up and down, noticed that I was almost in rags(衣衫褴褛), then said, “Just a minute.”
I waited till he had finished his work. Then he took me into a back room to choose a cheapest suit for me. I put it on. It didn’t fit, but it was new and I was anxious to have it, so I said shyly:
“Could you wait a few days for the money? I haven’t any small change on me.”
The fellow looked at me coldly and said, “Oh, you haven’t. Well, of course, I know that gentlemen like you carry only large notes(支票)”.
I was angry, and said, “My friend, you shouldn't judge a stranger always by the clothes he wears. I am quite able to pay for this suit. I simply didn't wish to put you to the trouble of changing a large note. ” “Why do you think we can’t change your note? Instead, we can.”
I handed the note to him and said: “Oh, very well, I am sorry.”
He received it with a smile, and then as he looked at the note, his smile froze.
Realizing what was going on, the owner of the shop gave a low whistle and talked excitedly, as if to himself.
“To sell such a suit as that to a millionaire! Tod’s a fool. Please get those clothes off, sir. Wait till you see what we’ll make for you to your own measure.”
Before I could get in a word he had measured me, and was giving orders for evening suits, morning suits, shirts and all sorts of things.

The jackdaw is a kind of blackbird that lives in Europe. Jackdaws live together in groups. Young jackdaws do not know their enemies. When the older jackdaw sees a dog, it makes a loud rattling sound. The younger birds know this sound means an enemy is nearby. The sound warns them to know their enemies.
If a young jackdaw is in a dangerous place, a jackdaw parent flies over him from behind. The parent bird flies low over the younger bird’s back. The parent’s tail feathers move quickly from side to side. It is trying to say, “Follow me.” At the same time, the parent calls out, “Key-aw, Key-aw.” The parent means, “Fly home with me.”
