24、 Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system (远程遥控系统)-allowing users to control the heating and looks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, healthcare and government services. Around the city, escalators (自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, the head of a research company.

25、Minds work together
"Let's brainstorm together!" You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really a good way to deal with problems, especially creative ones?
Dutch company WeTransfer conducted (进行) a survey of 20,000 people from 197 countries and regions. Most of the participants have creative jobs. They are writers, musicians, photographers, and podcasters (播客博主). The survey results suggested that brainstorming is largely unhelpful for solving a creative challenge.
"It seems that while working together is important to bring an idea to life, it's not that good for shaping ideas in the first place," said Rob Alderson, WeTransfer's former editor in chief.
If we give people enough time and space to think properly (适当地), they will come up with better ideas, Alderson added. Even Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, sees spending time alone to think as part of his own creative process.
However, most companies fail to give their employees (员工) a chance to prepare and form their thoughts. They often have many meetings scheduled, which is a killer of creativity, according to the survey. More than 40 percent of participants see meetings as a barrier (障碍) to good thinking.
Spending time alone to think will help you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking. This is important when you're making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of participants in We Transfer's survey say they trust their own instincts (直觉) and research when they consider an idea.
【1】What was the result of the survey?

26、We’ll finally grow up someday, leaving our parents and facing the challenges in life. Parents may not be able to solve every problem for us. Instead, we should have enough life skills to cope with the problems that come our way.
This is what our country tries to do now — helping more students gain working spirit. To stress the importance of hard-working spirit education (劳动教育) among students of different ages, the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council released a guideline recently.
The guideline calls for students to respect work. Students should learn basic life skills and form good working habits through such education.
The government has been trying to stress the importance of hard-working spirit education. But this has been overlooked in recent years. Many teens do not know about the importance of working hard and are uninterested in doing so.
According to a study of nearly 3,000 students that was done by Ningbo Evening News in March, only 22 percent of primary and middle school students help with everyday chores around the house.
Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard, the guideline says. Primary and middle schools should provide students with hard-working spirit classes every week, according to the guideline. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience. For example, schools can teach children how to plant trees on Tree-Planting Day.
As children’s first teachers, parents should also encourage children to learn how to do chores at home. Students should master one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own clothes and tidying their rooms.
