24、Self- reflection (反省) means stopping the mad rush of activity and keeping yourself and your mind cool, so your brain can evaluate (评价) the input that it has already received. Some people prefer to do their self-reflection in the way of thinking, while others do it in the way of writing something, like keeping a diary or writing notes of some kind.
School textbooks are often divided into units of study. This can make self-reflection easier for someone who wants to do it. Self-reflection can be done in any of the subjects you are learning: math, art or others. Sometimes you are reminded that the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Using those natural breaks above as chances to reflect is a good way.
As a student, you can do self-reflection at school. First, you can write down some notes on things that you learned in this unit that you did not know before you began. Let your mind think over the notes and make some connections with what you have learned. Next, think about the things that you still wonder about. For example, you learned a new way to solve a math problem, but you are not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to seek answers when you meet the same topic again.
Self-reflection is an important skill for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to reflect, try it now.

25、The Building That Moves
Everyone knows that buildings don't move. They can't change the way they look. However, architect(建筑师)David Fisher wants to change that.
Fisher has an amazing idea. He wants to make 80-story buildings that change shape. Each floor will move around slowly. The floors will move at different speeds. Because of this, the shape of the building is always changing. “These buildings will never look the same,” says Fisher.
His idea is an interesting one. However, Fisher doesn't stop there. He also wants the building to be “green”. The building will make its own energy. In most buildings, only the top floor has a roof(屋顶). In Fisher's building, each floor will have its own roof. The roofs each have solar panels(太阳能板). This means a lot more solar energy. Also, machines between each floor of the building will catch the wind. They will turn the wind into energy.
Fisher's ideas sound impossible. However, that's what people also said before humans traveled into space!

C.To show that unusual ideas can sometimes work.
26、
An unusual school, Notch Peak Elementary, has just one student and only one teacher. The only student is Corinne Gaby. Her teacher is Lisa Geary. Corrine has no brothers or sisters and lives with her parents on a large farm in a mountainous area.
The school is based on the idea that every child has the right to a public education-no matter where that child lives. But the closest public school is at least a one-and-a-half hour drive away. And that road is not considered safely passable during the winter.
A new, separate school was not built. Instead, a classroom area was created on the second floor of a horse barn (马厩). Large windows keep the room bright, and a wood stove provides heat.
Several teachers were considered for this unusual teaching situation. The first lasted a year. The next left after two. Then came Lisa Geary. She says her first year was “harder than expected.” She faced lonely surroundings and severe weather.
“It wasn't easy in the beginning Corinne was strong-headed, and it was tough.” Geary said she became discouraged with their lack of progress .At first, she said it seemed like Corinne did not want to be taught. “We really, really struggled that first year, so it wasn't fun for me as a teacher who is waiting for her cup to be fled up.” Corinne agrees that the start of teaching was difficult.
But over time, Corinne said Geary's teaching methods changed her mind about the unusual one-on-one learning situation. “Now in fifth grade and fourth grade, Ms. Geary and I have seen lots of changes in ourselves.” Corinne says Geary's teaching has taught her far more than just what happens in the classroom.
Geary adds that in every teaching situation, the relationship between teacher and student is very important. She says that her relationship with Corinne is now so close, the two are like family.
Corinne agrees that the two have a much deeper connection than most students and teachers. She describes Geary as the “greatest teacher in the galaxy.”
The two also spend a lot of time together outside the classroom. Sometimes Corinne even gets to sleep over at her teacher's house, and they both love taking care of the animals on the farm.
【1】Geary said her first year was “harder than expected” because________.
A.she had to drive at least one and a half hours to get back home
B.Corinne's parents didn't like the teacher and her teaching ways
C.the life was poor in the cold weather and there was little progress in Corinne's study

【2】Which of the following about Lisa Geary can be inferred from the passage?

D.“It is she who has spent almost three years with me in the horse barn.”
27、 Reintroducing beaver(海狸) to Britain could help clean up rivers, prevent flooding 水灾 and minimise soil loss, said an expert .
The results from a test area in Devon showed muddy water was three times cleaner when it left from where the beavers were living .Richard Brazie,a professor at the University of Exeter said, . "when the beavers dam(筑坝) our streams they keep soil in the headwaters.then the soil wouldn't block up rivers downstream and pollute our drinking and bathing waters. If we bring beavers back it can help to solve Britain’s problem of soil loss and pollution of waterways.
Prof Brazier's claims were disputed by the National Farmers' Union (NFU), which warned that the reintroduction of beavers to Scotland had damaged fields and forests . Spokesman Mark Pope said:"The effect the beavers have had on farmland, riverbanks and flood defenses in Scotland are still unknown. We wait for the results of the Devon test . Prof Brazier, insisted the animals could even play a useful role in preventing flooding. He told BBC News:" The public is now paying people to build leaky有漏洞的 dams to keep storm waters in the uplands. But the beavers do it free when building their own homes."
However, Professor Jane Rickson, a soil specialist from Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, joined the NFU in sounding a note of warning. “ in some places in the UK people were worrying soil loss,” she said “Beavers may in fact reduce the river channel and remove plants, it might cause greater erosion(侵蚀) of bank and increase, rather than decrease in the risk of flooding “. And she said beaver dams should be "leaky" to avoid build-ups of huge amount of waters.
