  • 24、No charge for love

A farmer had some puppies to sell. He nailed (用钉子) a sign above his door. As he was driving the last nail into the door, he felt a gentle pull at his left trouser leg. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

“Sit,” the boy said. “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

“Well,” said the farmer, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a great deal of money.”

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then he pulled out a handful of coins from his pocket and said, “I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”

The farmer smiled and whistled. Out of the doghouse came Little Dolly, who ran down the ramp (坡道) followed by four other little balls of fur. One puppy was lagging very much behind the others. “I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing at the limping (瘸着腿走) puppy.

The farmer knelt down beside the boy and said, “No, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run or play with you like the other puppies.” To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his right trouser leg to show a metal brace (支架). Looking up at the farmer, he said, “You see, sir, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands.”

With tears in his eyes, the farmer picked up the little puppy and handed it to the little boy.

“How much do I have to pay?” asked the boy.

  • 25、   It is often said that elderly people don’t understand youngsters, while many believe that children are too young to fully appreciate the wisdom ( ) of their elders. But in truth, both groups have a lot to learn from each other.

Sister Geraldine Tan runs the St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged and Hospice in Singapore. It’s mainly a facility (机构) for serving the elderly. But not all of its visitors are senior citizens (老年人).

The home also includes a childcare center for about 50 kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old. At the center of the home’s courtyard (庭院), there’s a playground where the elderly can play with the kids. By doing so, they can learn more about each other and gain mutual ( ) respect and understanding.

I think this is quite an interesting idea. For one thing, we live in a world where aging societies are becoming more common. China itself is facing this problem as its population ages. It will be important for young people to be able to understand and care for the elderly in the coming decades (数十年).

Sadly, my own grandparents weren’t around when I was little, as they had already passed away. I never got to learn what the world was like through their eyes, or what kinds of challenges they might have faced when they were my age. Their lives will always be a mystery to me.

But I suppose I can still learn from other people of older generations. I might find some of their ideas old-fashioned, and they might believe that my generation’s way of thinking is strange or incorrect. But we can still learn from each other anyway.

1What is special about the Singaporean facility?

A.It is actually a childcare center. B.Not every visitor is allowed to go there.

C.It accepts both elderly people and kids. D.The elderly help take care of kids there.

2What problem does the world face, according to the writer?

A.Kids are showing less respect for the elderly. B.The elderly can’t understand children.

C.There are more and more elderly people. D.Young people are unable to care for the elderly.

    3It is clear that________.

A.Sister Geraldine Tan lost her parents when she was still very young

B.the St. Joseph’s Home mainly serves senior people

C.the writer has no brothers or sisters

D.about 50 kids between the ages of 6 months and 2 years old are in the St. Joseph’s Home

4In Paragraph 5, the writer tells us that________.

A.we should cherish our grandparents B.we should see the world in a more traditional way

C.grandparents face many challenges D.grandparents’ lives are full of mystery

5What opinion might the writer agree with?

    A.Elderly people don’t understand youngsters.

    B.Youngsters can’t appreciate elderly people’s wisdom.

C.The elderly and the young share little experience.

D.Different generations can learn from each other.

  • 26、As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and especially chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.

One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail into her house every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.

Mailboxes were sometimes used for other things. One note left in a mailbox read, "Nat, take these eggs to Marian. She’s baking a cake and doesn’t have any eggs. "A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank.

Later, father died. As I drove home, I noticed two green and red mailboxes made by father were still on each side of Main Street. Each box had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.

When I saw Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. He asked, " What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?"

    “The letters?”

    “I guess you never knew.”

    "Knew what?”

Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year.”

I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families.

For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.

1It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that the writer regarded his travels with Dad as________.

    A. great chances to help other people B. happy occasions to play with animals

    C. exciting experiences with a lot of fun D. good opportunities to enjoy chocolate cookies 9)

2The writer provides the detail about the businessman to show that

    A. Dad had a strong sense of duty B. Dad was an honest and dependable man

    C. Dad had a strong sense of respect D. Dad was a kind and generous man

3What surprised the children most when they received letters in reply from Santa Claus every year?

    A. Santa Claus lived alone in the cold North Pole.

    B. Santa Claus answered all their letters every year.

    C. Santa Claus had unique(独一无二的) mailboxes for the children

    D. Santa Claus had so much information about their families

Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise hands when a question is 3. “I think it’s a problem that might affect(影响) our studies, but I am afraid to make 4 in front of my classmates,” he said.
