四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Paul Nicklen waited patiently on a sheet of ice in the Arctic. He was there to take pictures for National Geographic. Finally,he saw something big and white. It was a polar bear, swimming towards him in the icy water.

Paul lay down on the ice to get a better photo, but the polar bear jumped out of the water and tried to attack him!Luckily for Paul, the ice cracked or broke and the bear fell back into the water. The polar bear wasn’t so lucky. It couldn’t get a meal and had to swim farther away to find food.

To understand the polar bear’s problem, you need to know two things about the Arctic.First, the Arctic is mostly ocean.Second, ice covers a lot of the Arctic Ocean. In winter, the ice forms a thick, white sheet, but in summer, the ice becomes thinner and breaks into pieces.Sea ice is the key to survival for Arctic animals. However, because of global warmin9,Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting.

Polar bears need ice to hunt seals, their favourite meal. They stand on the ice waiting for the seal to come up for air.As Arctic ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes,or large pieces of floating ice.Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 km to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and sadly they drown.

On his last trip,Paul Nicklen saw three dead bodies of polar bears. Before global warming threatened Arctic ice,a dead bear was a rare sight.Paul is sad to see the dead bodies.Wildlife experts think global warming will have a terrible effect on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to shrink and endanger the bears. Some scientists believe 65 percent of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050.In other words, polar bears are in great danger.

1The main idea of the passage is that

    A. polar bears are amazing swimmers

    B. Arctic temperatures are rising

    C. global warming is endangering polar bears

2The polar bear that tried to attack Paul was unlucky because

    A. Paul swam away   B. it was on an ice floe   C. it couldn’t eat Paul

3According to the passage, polar bears hunt seals by

    A. waiting on the ice   B. waiting in the water   C. drowning the seals

    4From the passage,Paul Nicklen is maybe a

    A. scientist   B. photographer   C. psychologist

    5We can infer(推断)that polar bears

    A. won’t have any food in 205

    B. will all die before 2050

    C. cannot find food easily

  • 25、   When you feel sick, you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, and asks what you’ve been thinking about recently. When you leave, she gives you not only some medicine but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.

Doctors and scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way they do are called psychologists (心理学家). They are starting to believe that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system ( ). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body. Stress can help us better understand this link(关联).

Stress is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. In fact, stress is necessary, so everybody has stress more or less. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body’s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

When you feel stressed, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical thing that speeds up your breathing and your heartbeat. And that’s what can do something bad to you. Therefore, how can you deal with stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren’t under so much stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can’t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don’t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.

The link between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body. It’s important to get enough sleep and eat nutritious ( ) meals. Some people take a vitamin-mineral pill every day. Another thing that you can do is daily exercise. You can go running or jogging or do aerobic(有氧的) dancing or work out at the gym.

  • 28、

Why do we call women jinguo(巾帼)in Chinese?

In China, jinguo is a cool and somewhat literary way to refer to women.

But what does it1(actual) mean ?

It is a kind of2/skɑːf/ or head wrap that was worn in ancient China.

Before the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220), it was fashionable for men and women to use jinguo to wrap their hair. Later on, only women wore them.

It is said that jinguo was used to refer to women because of Zhuge Liang—a famous statesman who lived3/ˈdʊrɪŋ/  the Three Kingdoms period(220-228).4(story) say that Zhuge once started a war5the Wei Kingdom. However, the Wei general(将军) Sima Yi didn’t want to fight and asked his army to stay in the city. Zhuge then6 send a jinguo to Sima as a form of humiliation(羞辱)—implying that Sima was as timid(胆怯的)as a little girl.

After that, people started to use jinguo to refer to women, but as a form of praise7 . There is a phrase“巾帼不让须眉”, which means “women are not inferior to men”. Xumei refers to men because men often have8 /θɪk/ beards and eyebrows.

People also put jinguo and yingxiong together to make the phrase“jinguo yingxiong”, or “female heroes”.9 example, Hua Mulan and Mu Guiying were both well-known jinguo yingxiong in ancient China.

Today, jinguo yingxiong doesn’t just refer to female warriors like Hua and Mu. It can refer to any outstanding woman who has made great 10(achieve).
