二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   To the cheering of taxi drivers and the honking of horns, the comedian and actor Eddie Izzard ran into London yesterday to complete his 43rd marathon in 52 days. In total he had covered 1,100 miles. His 43 marathons were in aid of the charity Sports Relief, which raises money for the poor all over the world. So far Izzard has raised more than £200,000.

Fighting blisters (水疱) that have caused the nails on his smaller toes to fall off, he ran up The Mall and into Trafalgar Square, where he had started 7.5 weeks ago. In finishing he proved what many thought was an impossible task: that a 47-year-old comedian with no sporting experience could do something a top athlete might find difficult.

After only six weeks’ training he started out on a journey that would take him to every corner of the British Isles. “The first three weeks were the hardest,” he said. The non-stop pressure on his body made him unable to sleep at night and he would wake exhausted with “blisters on top of blisters”.

But the people he met along the way cheered him up. “People stopped their cars and cheered, they gave me money and food.” More than 500,000 people “followed” the comedian, in a different sense, on Twitter. Running into London he looked lean and muscular. “Everyone says my legs look very good but I thought they looked quite good beforehand,” he said.

Simon Blease, 51, a sports doctor and mountain runner who has been following his progress, was waiting on Tower Bridge. “I didn’t think he could do it,” he said. “Like a lot of people I thought he would have a good try, but his body would break down. Someone with so little training. I find it extraordinary that he has done it.”

Asked what he had gained, Izzard said “I know now I can do that. Sport is one of those words that stopped being part of my life when I was about 14. Sporting success was not something I ever associated myself with.” He now plans to continue jogging and hopes to inspire others into sport.

1Which of the following statements is true about Eddie lzzard

A.He took part in 43 marathon competitions in 52 days.

B.He was sponsored by Sports Relief in the running

C.He ran 1,100 miles for the purpose of helping the poor.

D.He took the challenge to prove he could be a top athlete.

2What difficulty did Eddie Izzard meet with during the running?

A.Injury in his ankles. B.Sleeplessness at night.

    C.Pressure to win. D.Inadequate time.

    3What does Simon Blease imply

A.He used to think Eddie would give up halfway.

B.Training may not be necessary for marathon runners.

C.Eddie was a good model for others to follow.

D.He owed Eddie’s success to his strong body.

4According to the passage, which of the following words can NOT describe Eddie Izzard?

    A.Humourous . B.Persevering

    C.Loving D.Creative

  • 27、Ask the Expert: Supporting Someone with Anxiety

How did you become an expert in supporting people with anxiety?

As part of my training, I specialized in cognitive behavioral therapy(认知行为治疗)the evidence-based treatment for anxiety. I used to work at the center for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma at the Maudsley Hospital.1

How possible is it to help a loved one who is suffering from anxiety?

2But it depends on how much they want to be helped and how much they recognize that they have a problem. You can be merciful and supportive, but it's not your responsibility to make them better.

What can people do practically to help?

You can help them get the right treatment, take them to appointments and make them available for appointments by babysitting, bringing round meals. If you're very close to them, you could read up on the problem and join support groups.3Ask how their mood is and what they want from you. They might not want to talk, but they might want to go for a coffee, or watch TV with you. Help them to take a break from their anxiety.

    What should they not do?

Don't be pushy. Don't avoid them.4If you make excuses for them about why they're not going out or constantly reassure them, you might be propping up(支撑)their anxiety.

  • 28、   It was a cold and windy night. My friend and I had met after a long time, and were chatting for hours. We did not notice the time passing by, and soon it was close to ten in the night. We decided to take an auto rickshaw(黄包车) to go to our house.

It started raining, and we hurried to get into an auto rickshaw and reach our place. None of the auto rickshaws stopped for us, except one.

The driver asked us where we wanted to go and we told the place. Without saying anything about the fee, he said, “please get in.”

We thanked him and got in.

Since it was very cold, I asked the driver to stop at any small restaurant or a tea shop. We wanted to have a cup of hot tea. The driver stopped near a small restaurant. We ordered tea and asked the driver to join us and have a cup of tea. The driver refused. I insisted, but he refused again politely.

    I was really surprised.

In 15 minutes we reached our house. We paid the fee and the driver thanked us. On an impulse, I stopped him, as I really wanted to ask him why he refused to drink tea with us at the restaurant.

He thought for a moment and replied, “Sir, My son passed away this morning in an accident. I don’t have enough money for his funeral(葬礼), so I made a promise not to drink anything until I earn enough money. That’s why I didn’t drink tea when you offered. Please don’t misunderstand.”

We both were touched and offered him more money for his son’s funeral. He politely refused.

“Thank you for your generosity, sir. In one or two hours, if I get one or two more customers, I will earn the money I need.” Then he left the place.

1Which of the following is not true?

A.The driver stopped near a small restaurant because of the author’s requirement.

B.The author got into the driver’s auto rickshaws without knowing the fee.

C.The driver accepted the money the author offered him for his son’s funeral.

D.It was a long time before the author and his friend met.

2Why did the driver refuse to join them and have a cup of tea?

    A.Because he didn’t like tea.

B.Because he didn’t like the author.

C.Because he had made a promise to his son that he would never drink tea again.

D.Because he had made a promise not to drink until he earned enough money for his son’s funeral.

3Which words can best describe the driver?

A.strange and serious. B.unfriendly and greedy.

    C.determined and self-respected. D.honest and hard-working.

  • 29、There have been many studies that show being in nature is good for your health. Walking in the woods is good for your well-being. Living near trees can help you live longer. But when you go for a walk in the woods, what is it particularly about being in nature or being outdoors that makes you feel good? Is it the sights or smells or sounds? A new study finds it might have something to do with the birds you hear while you have a walk.

Researchers from California Polytechnic State University analyzed how much the natural sounds people hear when they’re outdoors influence well-being. They found that the “chorus (合唱)” of birds singing increased well-being in protected natural areas.

For the study, researchers placed 10 hidden, evenly spaced speakers(扬声器) on two parts of trails(小路) in the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks in Colorado. They played recorded songs from 11 kinds of birds. The researchers take turns to play the birdsong for a few hours a day for a week, and then turned off the speakers for a week at a time. They interviewed hikers after they passed through the areas with the speakers.

“The main result is that hikers that heard the birdsong responded to questions that showed a higher level of well-being compared to those that did not hear the birdsong,” Biology Professor Clinton Francis, who led the research, says.

Hikers who heard more birdsong on the first part of the trail said they felt better. Those who heard more birdsong on the second part reported that they thought more birds lived along that part of the trail. This feeling of more birds helps make the hikers feel better. “With the chorus, we were able to show that natural sounds have a clear effect on the quality of hikers’ experiences,” says Francis.

A.To bring in the topic of the text.

B.To advise people to walk in nature.

    A.To broadcast chorus live.

B.To remind hikers of their health.

    C.To improve people’s well-being.

D.To play sounds of different birds.

【3】What was the final step of the research?

    A.Recording.

    B.Comparing.

    C.Photographing.

    D.Interviewing.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Being in nature is good for people’s heath.

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a 3, 900-foot peak (山峰) near where I live in Surrey, British Columbia, I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the top. But I loved to challenge something bigger than myself. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.

I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I’d met on the Internet. Two years ago, on 30 December when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to climb 11, 240-foot Mount Hood.

It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less danger of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 am, following the path alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about — 10℃. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued together.

After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau (高原) at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were terrible. My skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We checked our equipment and were prepared for the climb.

The way we followed grew narrower and steeper (更陡的), At around 9 am, we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. It felt good, Confidently, I thought I was safe. I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack (爆裂声), and a whole piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
